Having been burned, he knew that the secret place was covered, so he took a very low seat and sat before the Blessed One in order to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One understood his thoughts, habits, faculties, consciousness, and nature, and taught him the Dharma that was in accordance with them. Therefore, while sitting on that very seat, that boy, having shattered the twenty high peaks of the mountain of the view of the aggregates of destruction with the vajra of wisdom, directly realized the fruit of stream-entry. Having seen the truth, he thought: If I had not become like this, I would also renounce in the Blessed One's teachings, and I would strive, practice, and exert myself in order to cross over the rivers and overcome the bonds. As soon as he had this thought, that boy's ugly appearance and unpleasant smell disappeared. Then, he felt even greater joy towards the Blessed One. Having felt joy, he bowed down with his palms joined together in the direction of the Blessed One, and said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable one, if I am able to renounce, receive full ordination, and obtain the status of a bhikṣu in the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, then I would also like to practice the pure conduct in the presence of the Blessed One." Then, the Blessed One ordained him with the words, "Bhikṣu, come," and gave him full ordination, and also gave him a prophecy. He also, through diligence, practice, and effort, abandoned all defilements and directly realized the state of an arhat. Having become an arhat, he became free from desire for the three realms, possessing a mind that was equal to gold and dung, equal to the sky and the palm of the hand, cool like sandalwood soaked in water, having shattered the shell of the egg with wisdom, having attained wisdom, supernormal powers, and individual perfect knowledge, not looking to the gains, attachments, and honors of existence, and becoming an object of offering, remembrance, and reverence by the gods, including the powerful and attendant gods. Then, the bhikṣus asked the Blessed One: Venerable one, what karma did this bhikṣu commit, that the ripening of that karma resulted in ugliness?

He was born with eighteen kinds of ugly features, and his body emitted a foul odor from every pore. What deeds did he do that as soon as he generated the mind of renunciation, he became no longer ugly, but became beautiful? The Bhagavan was also pleased with this, and not displeased. He renounced in the teachings of the Bhagavan, abandoned all defilements, and realized the state of an Arhat. The Bhagavan said: Monks, this one has done and accumulated such deeds. Monks, in the past, in a secluded village, there lived a Brahmin who was handsome, pleasing to the eye, and beautiful. He was arrogant because of his appearance and youth, and he despised many ascetics and Brahmins. Then one day, he went up to the roof, surrounded by Brahmin children. When the Buddhas do not appear in the world, those who are compassionate to the poor and destitute, who live like rhinoceroses in remote places, the solitary objects of veneration in the world, appear in the world. A Pratyekabuddha went to that secluded village for alms, and he obtained some delicious food and drink. He carried it and walked along the road from the doorway of that Brahmin's house. The Brahmin saw him. In front of the Brahmin was a pot filled with excrement. Thinking to insult him, he kicked the pot with his foot towards the Pratyekabuddha, and the excrement from the pot covered his clothes, his body, and his bowl. When the Pratyekabuddha looked up, the Brahmin was overjoyed and made an ugly face, committing an insult with his bodily actions. Then, the Pratyekabuddha thought: This defilement will become base and weak, I should teach him a lesson. So he ascended into the sky above and displayed miracles of burning, blazing, raining, and lightning. Because ordinary people quickly generate faith through miracles, he prostrated at his feet as if cut by a wooden saw, and said: Great holy one, please be patient. I am drowning in the mire of evil deeds.

It was called Ra Da Dzo. Then, that Pratyekabuddha, out of compassion for him, descended to the earth. That Brahmin invited him into his home, took off those clothes and threw them away, anointed his body with incense, had him bathe with scented water, and offered him other Dharma robes. With his own hands, he satisfied him with many clean and excellent foods. He acted according to his wishes, prostrated at his feet, asked for forgiveness, and prayed: May I never be the recipient of the karma of harming such a supreme object of offering. By this root of virtue of honoring him, may I be born in a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family wherever I am born. May I please a teacher who is even more excellent than this, and may I not displease him. May I also attain such qualities. Even if this hundredfold non-virtuous deed is sure to ripen into fruition, may I, as soon as I generate the mind of renunciation, be free from ugliness and become beautiful. Monks, what do you think? The Brahmin at that time was none other than this son of a lion. Due to the ripening of the karma of harming that Pratyekabuddha, wherever he was born, he was born with eighteen kinds of ugly characteristics, and his body emitted a foul odor. He again honored him there and prayed: By this root of virtue, may I be born in a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family wherever I am born. May I please a teacher who is even more excellent than this, and may I not displease him. May I also attain such qualities. Even if this hundredfold non-virtuous deed is sure to ripen into fruition, may I, as soon as I generate the mind of renunciation, be free from ugliness and become beautiful. Monks, by this, he pleased a teacher who was even more excellent than hundreds of millions of Pratyekabuddhas, and he did not displease him, it is I.
