Having renounced the world in the doctrine, having abandoned all defilements, having realized the state of an Arhat, and as soon as the thought of renunciation arose, he became without ugliness and became good. Then the monks asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: "What deeds did the venerable Commander Lion do that, as a result of those deeds, he was born into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family? And this one has also pleased the Blessed One and has not displeased him." The Blessed One said: "In the teachings of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Kashyapa, this one became a lay follower. There, he gave alms and accumulated merit. For one lifetime, he protected the refuges and the foundations of training. At the time of death, he made a prayer: 'Alas, may this root of virtue cause me to be born in whatever place I may be born, into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family. May I please the Buddha, the Blessed One, who is the prediction of the Brahmin boy by the perfectly enlightened Buddha Kashyapa. May I not displease him.' Monks, what do you think? The lay follower of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Kashyapa at that time was none other than this Commander Lion. He gave alms and accumulated merit there, and for one lifetime, he protected the refuges and the foundations of training. As a result of the ripening of the karma of the prayer he made at the time of death, he was born in whatever place he was born, into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family. Monks, I have attained perfect enlightenment, being extremely equal to the Buddha Kashyapa, equal in power, equal in deeds, and equal in means. Therefore, this one has pleased me and has not displeased me." The cause of the division of the Sangha: The story took place in Rajagriha (present-day Rajgir, Bihar, India). At that time, there was a famine, and people were impoverished, and even beggars could not find food. Even parents did not think of giving good food and treating their own sons and daughters well, let alone beggars. Then, there the Blessed One to the monks

He instructed them, saying: "Monks, I wish to enter into solitary retreat for three months. Except for the fifteenth-day Uposatha and when food is brought, no monk should come to see me." Having instructed thus, the Blessed One entered into solitary retreat for three months. Then the monks made an internal rule: "Except for the fifteenth-day Uposatha and when food is brought, no monk should go to the Blessed One." Then Devadatta thought: "Now is the time for me to cause a schism in the Sangha of disciples of the ascetic Gautama, and to cause a schism in the wheel of Dharma." So he said to the monks: "Venerable ones, see how the ascetic Gautama treats his disciples. When the monks need to be sustained with all necessities, he dwells in solitary retreat. Monks, come here, come to me, and I will sustain you with all necessities." Then about five hundred monks, having heard his words, developed a mind of not looking to the Blessed One, and went to Devadatta and sat down. Then Devadatta gathered those monks and said: "If the ascetic Gautama dwells in the forest, we should dwell near the villages. Why? Because, monks, dwelling in the forest has many faults. If the ascetic Gautama allows the eating of meat, we should not eat it. Why? Because from that basis, beings will be killed. If the ascetic Gautama eats salt, we should not eat it. Why? Because it comes from semen. If the ascetic Gautama drinks milk, we should not drink it. Why? Because from that basis, calves will suffer. If the ascetic Gautama wears sewn robes, we should not wear them. Why? Because the efforts of people will be wasted. Those who obtain these five bases of ascetic practice, and desire, endure, and approve of these thoughts, and the ascetic Gautama's...

From now on, those who wish to separate and go elsewhere, and to depart from the ascetic Gautama, should say, "Take a stick." Then they distributed sticks within the Sangha. Five hundred monks took the sticks, and after distributing the sticks, they began to make a request: "Venerable Sangha, please listen. If the monk Gautama dwells in the monastery, then we shall dwell at the edge of the village. Why is that? Because there are many faults in monks dwelling in the monastery. If the ascetic Gautama allows the eating of meat, then we shall not eat it. Why is that? Because that root will cause beings to be killed. If the ascetic Gautama eats salt, then we shall not eat it. Why is that? Because it comes from semen. If the ascetic Gautama drinks milk, then we shall not drink it. Why is that? Because that root will cause the calves to suffer. If the ascetic Gautama wears sewn robes, then we shall not wear them. Why is that? Because the alms accumulated by people with great effort will be wasted. If it is the Sangha's time and it is permissible, may the Sangha allow it. Then the Sangha will completely accept these five foundations of ascetic practice and abide by them. This is the request." After saying this, Devadatta led five hundred monks to a monastery called the Poultry Garden, and then placed his best disciples, Kokalika, Khandadeva, Katamoraka, Jaya, and Samudradatta, in the left and right rows, dwelling in the center of the Sangha, experiencing the Teacher's monastic discipline. Then the thought arose in him: "Now I have caused a schism in the harmonious Sangha of monks of the ascetic Gautama, and I have also caused a schism in the wheel of Dharma." Thinking this, he dwelt in the center of the Sangha, experiencing the Teacher's monastic discipline. At the time of the Sangha's division, the monks had neither yoga, nor mindfulness, nor attainment, nor recitation. They did not remember the Sutra Pitaka, nor the Vinaya Pitaka, nor the Abhidhamma Pitaka, and of all virtuous aspects
