After that, he settled in a forest, built a hut of branches and leaves, and lived there. Then, many people living in the city of Dust saw that he was beautiful in body, beautiful in mind, and beautiful in attendants. After seeing him, most of the people developed a great liking for that sage. After they developed a liking, they respected that sage, regarded him as their teacher, as an example, made offerings to him, and served him with all kinds of implements. That sage also taught the Dharma from time to time to those who came there. They also heard the Dharma from him, and some of them renounced the world in the presence of that sage himself, and developed the four meditations and the five supernormal powers. Some, while remaining in their homes, properly took up the path of the ten virtuous actions, and also came to the sage from time to time to see him. From then on, they no longer went to those ascetics. Then, one day, those ascetics thought: "In the past, many people living in the city of Dust respected us, regarded us as their teachers, as examples, made offerings to us, and we were very wealthy and famous. Now that this sage has come, our wealth and respect have diminished. We must by all means ensure that this sage, together with his attendants, does not live here. If he is not here, our wealth and respect will return to what they were before." Thinking this, they said to the Brahmin boys: "Brahmin boys, know this: This sage has come, and our wealth and respect have diminished. We must spread false rumors about him in the streets and alleys of the city, saying that this sage is a enjoyer of desires, not a pure celibate. Do not think of respecting him." After saying this, because they were afraid and fearful of being slandered by him, they would either go to another place or cause us to die. If he is not here, our wealth and respect will return to what they were before. After saying this, the two of them, together with their attendants, entered the city of Dust, in the streets and alleys.

I, abiding at the crossroads and the triple crossroads, would make untrue accusations against that hermit, saying: 'This hermit is unchaste, possessing sinful qualities, indulging in desires, not practicing celibacy. He is deceiving you; do not think of being too respectful towards him.' After saying this, those common people, upon hearing it, immediately became displeased with that hermit, saying: 'This one indulges in desires; he is not a practitioner of celibacy.' Thus displeased, from then on, they no longer showed him respect, did not regard him as a guru, did not make images of him, did not make offerings, and did not even go to see him. Then, the hermit thought: 'Previously, these many people respected me, regarded me as a guru, made images of me, and made offerings. Now, these people do not respect me, do not regard me as a guru, do not make images of me, and do not make offerings. What has happened?' He saw those two ascetics, along with their attendants, making untrue accusations in the streets of the city of Dust. Having seen this, he thought again: 'In this city of Dust, I am being subjected to untrue accusations. In any case, all of this is due to gain and respect. Therefore, I should abandon everything here and settle in the former monastery.' Thinking this, he led those five hundred Brahmin boys and went to settle in the former monastery. After that hermit left, the gain and respect of those two ascetics became as before, and therefore they were very happy. Monks, what do you think? Who were those two ascetics with their attendants at that time? They were none other than the monks Shariputra and Maudgalyayana. There, those two, being controlled by gain and respect, made untrue accusations against that hermit. Due to the ripening of that karma, they were boiled in the hells of sentient beings for many years and hundreds of thousands of years. After dying and transmigrating, wherever they were born, they were still untrue.

Because he slandered them (Shariputra and Maudgalyayana), now he has reached the final existence and the final position, and until he attains the state of an Arhat, the monk Kokalika has slandered them among many with untrue, incorrect, fabricated, and false words. The monks reported: Venerable one, what deeds did the monk Kokalika commit, that as a result of the maturation of that deed, he was born in a great hell that split open like a lotus, and after being born there, five hundred plows appeared on his tongue. Similarly, from his left and right chests, beasts with iron claws such as dogs, lions, tigers, leopards, and bears tear and eat his flesh. Similarly, from above, birds with iron beaks such as vultures, crows, and hawks tear and eat his flesh. Similarly, from his left and right chests, a forest of iron silk-cotton trees grows. If he feels unbearable pain there and turns around, iron spears, large arrows, single-pointed vajras, and single-pointed spears will fall from above. The Buddha taught: That is because he harbored hatred towards Shariputra and Maudgalyayana. The so-called "Analysis" is as follows: The origin of the story is that the Buddha was residing in Shravasti, and the venerable Maudgalyayana, according to the Dharma, often traveled in the hells of sentient beings, traveled in the realm of pretas, traveled in the realm of animals, traveled in the realm of humans, and traveled in the realm of gods. After coming out, he would tell people about the sufferings of cutting, chopping, beating, and cooking in the hells of sentient beings; after coming out, he would tell about the sufferings of hunger, thirst, burning, scorching, and cooking in the realm of pretas; and the sufferings arising from mutual devouring in the realm of animals; and the sufferings of human quarrels and exhaustion; and the sufferings of death, falling, dissipation, and destruction of the gods. When they heard these, they would become weary, and after becoming weary, they would also attain higher achievements. Then one day, the venerable Maudgalyayana
