Some realized the fruit of entering the stream. Some realized the fruit of once returning. Some realized the fruit of non-returning. Some, having gone forth, realized the state of being an Arhat. Some cultivated the seed of becoming a Chakravartin king. Some cultivated the seed of becoming a powerful Chakravartin, some of becoming Indra, some of becoming Brahma, some of the Bodhi of a Shravaka, some of the Bodhi of a Pratyekabuddha, and some cultivated the seed of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete Bodhi. Among those retinues, most were inclined towards the Buddha, inclined towards the Dharma, and inclined towards the Sangha, and they were arranged accordingly. Then, the monks beseeched the Blessed One, saying: "Venerable One, please behold! The monk Kokalika, having harbored hatred towards the Venerable Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, has inclined towards falling into hell." The Blessed One replied: "It is not only now, but also in the past, that he harbored hatred towards these two alone, so listen to how he inclined towards falling into hell. Monks, in the past, in a city called 'No Strife,' there was a king named Great Army ruling. Before that King Great Army was a Brahmin who was wise, clear, kind-hearted, and had gone beyond all treatises, and he was revered, respected as a guru, regarded as an example, offered to, and honored as an Arhat throughout the land, and he was endowed with the highest gains and fame. At that time, in a certain forest, there lived a hermit with five hundred attendants. With him were two Brahmin youths who were wise, clear, kind-hearted, and had gone beyond all treatises. Then, one day, that hermit thought: 'While I dwell in this hermitage of asceticism, I am unable to benefit many people. Rather, I should establish a dwelling in the outskirts of the city.' So, he thought, 'Not far from that place, with branches and leaves.'

He was sitting covered with felt. Therefore, that place became a place to be respected, to be regarded as a teacher, to be regarded as an example, and to be offered to. Later, that sage also grew old and could not go to those places. At that time, those two Brahmin boys went there, going to the kings, the great ministers, the rich, the householders, the people of the palace retinue, the merchants, and the captains. The two of them were respected there, regarded as teachers, regarded as examples, offered to, and honored as Arhats. Then one day, the chanter had the thought: "Before, I was the place to be respected, to be regarded as a teacher, to be regarded as an example, and to be offered to in this whole land. Now, whatever gains and respect I have have been transferred to these two Brahmin boys. If these two are not here, then my gains and respect will return as before. I should spread untrue rumors about these two, and they will lose respect, and I fear they will leave." So, the chanter immediately spread untrue rumors, saying: "These two are enjoyers of desires, these two are not celibate." Then, when the sage saw that the two of them were being falsely accused, he stopped the chanter, saying: "Brahmin, do not harbor hatred towards these two Brahmin boys. May you be harmed, disadvantaged, and suffer for a long time." Although the sage stopped him again and again in this way, he could not stop him, and he harbored hatred towards the two of them, and therefore he went to the hell of sentient beings. Monks, what do you think? At that time, the old sage, who was abiding in the conduct of a Bodhisattva, was myself. At that time, the two who became Brahmin boys were none other than these two, Shariputra and Maudgalyayana. At that time, the one who became the chanter was this Kokalika himself. At that time, even though I stopped him, he harbored hatred towards these two, and therefore he went to the hell of sentient beings.

fell into hell. Even now, I am still preventing, but I harbor hatred towards Shariputra and Maudgalyayana's son, thus falling into the hell of sentient beings. Then, the monks reported to the Blessed One: Venerable One, what deeds did Shariputra and Maudgalyayana's son do, that due to the ripening of that karma, that monk, in the midst of the assembly, used untrue, incorrect, false, and lying words to accuse them of defeat without any basis? The Blessed One said: Monks, the deeds done and accumulated by these two in the past will not ripen in the external realm of earth, nor will they ripen in the realm of water, fire, or wind. But the good and non-virtuous deeds done and accumulated will only ripen in the aggregates, realms, and sources that are grasped. The karmas of embodied beings, even for hundreds of kalpas, will not be exhausted. When they gather and the time arrives, they will ripen into their own fruit. Monks, in the past, in a place called the City of Dust, there lived two ascetics with five hundred attendants. In that city, all the people served them, regarded them as gurus, regarded them as examples, made offerings to them, and revered them as Arhats, and they possessed supreme gains and fame. At that time, in a certain mountain valley, there lived a hermit with five kinds of clairvoyance, great magical powers, great strength, and five hundred attendants. He was of great essence, of loving essence, possessed compassion, was kind to sentient beings, and engaged in benefiting sentient beings. He thought: While I am staying in a solitary place, I cannot benefit sentient beings. Rather, I should go and settle in the City of Dust. By staying there, I will surely be able to benefit a great number of people. Thinking this, he stayed in that solitary place for as long as he pleased. Then, he set out with five hundred attendants, carrying deer skins, clothes made of bark, staffs, pills, water ladles, and pouring ladles, and went to the City of Dust.
