Chapter Three of the Vinaya Section. Chapter Three of the Vinaya Section. The Hundred Thousand Deeds, Volume Fourteen, called Kokālika: The introduction takes place in Rājagṛha. At that time, the venerable Kokālika was dwelling on Mount Sabkaṅga, in the forest of the Deer Park in the Grove of the Terrifying Mother. The Brahmins and householders dwelling on Mount Sabkaṅga revered him, regarded him as a guru, regarded him as a model, and made offerings to him. As a result, he obtained robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine, and medical supplies. He served all the monks who came there with all kinds of necessities. At that time, the venerable Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana, while wandering, went to Mount Sabkaṅga and stayed in the forest of the Deer Park in the Grove of the Terrifying Mother. Then, the monk Kokālika heard that the venerable Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana, while wandering, had come to Mount Sabkaṅga and were staying in the forest of the Deer Park in the Grove of the Terrifying Mother. Having heard this, he went to where the venerable Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana were, and upon arriving, he bowed his head at the feet of the venerable Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana, and then sat down to one side. Having sat down to one side, the monk Kokālika said to the venerable Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana: "I will serve you two venerable ones with all kinds of necessities. Please stay here without worry." The two of them said: "Venerable one, this Mount Sabkaṅga is very frightening, and we cannot stay here. We two will go to some secluded place and stay there." Kokālika said: "Even if you stay there, I will serve you with all kinds of necessities. Please grant me your permission." The venerable Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana said: "If you do not tell anyone on Mount Sabkaṅga that Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana are staying in some secluded place, then we two can stay. But if you tell anyone, we two will not tell you and will leave from there." Kokālika said: "I will not tell anyone."

Please allow it. Then, the two of them didn't say anything to him and agreed. After the two of them agreed to him, they went to the place of the monastery. After settling down, Kokalika began to attend to the two of them with all necessities. Then, at that time, there lived a householder in Sab Kangri. That householder became very fond of the monk Kokalika, and he attended to him with all necessities. Later, one day, the wife of that householder became pregnant. After nine or ten months, she gave birth to a boy who was handsome, lovely, and beautiful. When he grew up, relying on the monk Kokalika, he gained faith in the Buddha's teachings and took refuge and the precepts. Later, one day, he had the thought: I should give up living at home and become ordained in the Buddha's teachings. So, he went to the venerable Kokalika and said: Venerable Kokalika, if I can be ordained and fully ordained in the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, and obtain the status of a monk, I would also like to practice the pure conduct in the presence of the Blessed One. Kokalika said: Young man, do your parents allow it? He said: They do not allow it. Kokalika said: Child, the Buddhas and the Buddha's Shravakas do not ordain or fully ordain those who are not allowed by their parents. Go and ask your parents, and then it will be easier for you. Then, he said: I will do as the noble ones please. Then, he went to his parents and said: Father and mother, please allow me to be ordained in the Buddha's teachings. The two parents said: We may be separated by your death, but we will not allow it while you are alive. Later, one day, the venerable Kokalika went to various regions to accomplish some tasks, and he entrusted the co-residents and attendants to the venerable Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, saying: Venerable ones, I am going to various regions for some business.

Having prophesied with... and requested the prophecy of remembrance and the place of reporting. Then, he entrusted the Sangha to the two of them and went wandering. After he left, the Venerable Shariputra and Maudgalyayana thought: Do these monks have a little of the four parts of definitive goodness? The two of them looked and found that they did. Seeing that it depended entirely on the two of them, the Venerable Maudgalyayana encouraged those monks with the miracle of magical power, and the Venerable Shariputra encouraged them with the miracle of instruction. Those monks, through diligence, practice, and effort, abandoned all defilements and directly realized the state of Arhat. After they attained the state of Arhat, that householder's son also told his parents, then went to the monastery, went to those monks and said: Where is the Venerable Kokalika? They said: What do you need him for? The boy said: I want to be ordained by him. Those monks said to him: What do you need Kokalika for? These two, the Venerable Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, are the supreme pair, a good pair, you should be ordained by those two. As soon as he heard that, the boy was overjoyed and went to where the Venerable Shariputra and Maudgalyayana were, and when he arrived, he bowed to their feet with his head, and sat in front of the Venerable Shariputra to listen to the Dharma. The Venerable Shariputra also understood his thoughts, habits, faculties, wisdom, and nature, and taught him the Dharma that suited him. Therefore, while the boy was sitting on that seat, he destroyed the twenty high peaks of the mountain of the view of the collection of destructibles with the Vajra of Wisdom, and directly realized the fruit of stream-entry. After he saw the truth, he stood up from his seat, draped his upper robe over one shoulder, and bowed with folded hands in the direction of the Venerable Shariputra, and said this to the Venerable Shariputra: Venerable Shariputra, I wish to be ordained and fully ordained in this well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, and become a Bhikshu.
