Thinking, "I will give," the king gave a piece of food to the Brahmin. Then, thinking, "I will eat one piece," the Brahmin said, "O god, I cannot survive on one piece of food." Hearing this, the king immediately thought, "If I do not give him the remaining piece of food, this Brahmin may starve to death. Since I have already engaged in the work of benefiting sentient beings, I would rather give up my own life to save the life of another." Then he made a prayer to attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, saying, "Alas, may this root of virtue cause me, in this blind world without a guide, without a complete guide, without a teacher, to become a Tathagata, an Arhat, a perfectly and completely enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, a Sugata, a knower of the world, a tamer of beings, an unsurpassed one, a teacher of gods and humans, a Buddha, a Bhagavan!" Having said this, he spoke in verse: By this vast power of giving, may I quickly become a Buddha in the three realms, surpassing all the Buddhas of the past, and liberate the countless beings who have not yet been liberated. Having said this, he gave the piece of food to Indra, the lord of the gods, who was in the guise of a Brahmin. Then Indra, the lord of the gods, thought, "The Bodhisattva has done what is supremely difficult!" So, he made the Brahmin form disappear and transformed into his natural body, saying, "What are you striving for with this effort?" He replied, "I am striving for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment." Indra said, "If your mind and mental factors are like this, you will surely manifest unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. At that time, please remember me!" Having said this, Indra, the lord of the gods, caused a great rain to fall, and all the grains grew abundantly, and the land of Kashi (ancient Indian place name, around present-day Varanasi) became as prosperous as before. Monks, what do you think? The king Moonlight at that time, who was abiding in the conduct of a Bodhisattva, was none other than myself. At that time, I was also praising giving and the fruits of giving.

If it is said, what need is there to mention when I now directly see the giving and the result of giving? Why wouldn't the Thus-Gone-One now praise the giving and the distribution of giving? The third summary verse from the Hundred Thousand Deeds is complete. The third summary verse.
