If it is determined in a place, then even from the end of the food and the remainder of the food, if a worthy recipient is found, one should not eat it until it is given or distributed. If their minds are not completely entangled by stinginess, then, just as I know the fruit of giving and also know the ripening of the fruit of giving distribution, sentient beings neither know the fruit of giving nor know the ripening of the fruit of giving distribution. Therefore, they eat without giving or distributing with a universally grasping mind, and their minds are completely entangled by stinginess. The Blessed One spoke thus, and after the Sugata spoke thus, the Teacher spoke again thus: The ripening of distribution, how it becomes a great matter, the great sages spoke thus, if sentient beings know, they will not eat without giving, nor will they be stingy, those universally grasping minds, will never arise, why children are foolish, obscured by ignorance, all do not know, therefore with a universally grasping mind, they always eat without giving, they are born stingy, and their minds are completely entangled. Then, the monks reported to the Blessed One: Venerable One, please see, the Blessed One is speaking of the merits of giving and giving distribution. The Blessed One taught: It is not only now, but also in the past, how I praised giving and the distribution of giving, listen. Monks, in the past, in the city of Varanasi, there was a king named Moonlight who ruled. During his reign, it was rich, prosperous, peaceful, had good harvests, full of people and population, strife and fighting were calmed, there was no conflict, internal strife, thieves, disease and famine, it was full of rice, sugarcane, cattle and buffalo, there was no harm, thorns were cleared, and the country was ruled according to the Dharma as if treating an only son.

Then. That king was also the embodiment of loving-kindness, possessed of compassion, loving towards sentient beings, and delighted in giving. He gave gifts and accumulated merit. He gave food to those who desired food, he gave drink to those who desired drink, he gave clothes to those who desired clothes, and he gave incense, flower garlands, and unguents to those who desired incense, flower garlands, and unguents. He prepared all the necessary medicines and utensils for the sick, and he cared for the lowly, the poor, the suffering, and the helpless. Having prepared many foods and drinks, he gave them to those who travel in the sky, those who dwell in the water, and those who dwell on the land. Then, later, there was a drought in the land of Kashi. There, the fortune-telling Brahmins proclaimed that it would not rain for twelve years. Then, because it did not rain, there was a famine, and many people became helpless. Then, King Moonlight announced: Those of you who have enough food for twelve years should stay here. Those who do not have enough should go to another country. Come back when the year is good. The land will still be here later, but life will not be here later. So he announced. Then, as soon as they heard this, some of the many people went to live in other countries. Some, attached to their homeland, stayed there. After those people had eaten all the food they had, they were distressed by hunger and went to the king and said: O God, we are hungry, please give us food. Then, as soon as he heard this, the king thought: Most of the people here need to be given food for a long time. So he said: Wait a moment, and I will speak to the ministers and do it. Then the king said to the ministers: Do I and these many people living in the country have enough to eat for twelve years? The ministers said: O God, we should first take out the grain from the granaries and distribute it to everyone. Then the ministers took out the grain from the granaries and distributed it.

Then, the many people residing in the city began to be counted. From then on, for twelve years, calculating what each person should receive as their share, it turned out that everyone would receive one portion of food each day. The king, knowing that he had two portions to eat, they said to the king: O divine one, for twelve years, all the people residing in the city have been receiving one portion of food each, like an umbrella. The divine one has two portions to eat, they reported. Then, as soon as he heard that, the king immediately ordered that all the many people residing in the city should be given one portion of food each day. Those many people were also properly guided onto the path of the ten virtuous actions. Then, whoever died there would be reborn in the heavens. By being born there, all the places in the heavens became filled. Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, thought: The places in the heavens will be filled by two causes, namely, the appearance of a Tathagata and the appearance of a Chakravartin. Has a Chakravartin appeared in the world now? Or has a Tathagata appeared? Thinking this, he looked and it was not so. He also thought, then by whose power have the places in the heavens become filled? He observed and realized that it was by the power of King Moonbeam that it had happened. He thought: Is this to accomplish becoming Indra or becoming Brahma? Thinking this, he looked and saw that he was to accomplish unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, thought: Is this being steadfast? Or is this being not steadfast, I will go and examine this for a while. If this being is steadfast, then I will make offerings to him. If this being is not steadfast, then I will make him steadfast. Thinking this, he transformed into the form of a Brahmin and said: O divine one, I have come because of hunger, please grant me food. The king thought: If I take from others and give to him, then I would be preserving one person's life while harming another person's life. Instead, I will take one portion from my own food, I will eat one portion, and this one portion
