Then one will experience the suffering of hell. Thus he spoke. Monks, furthermore, do you wish to hear the lifespan of sentient beings born in the cold hells? The monks replied: Blessed One, now is the time for the Blessed One to explain the lifespan of sentient beings born in the cold hells. Sugata, now is the time. As the Blessed One instructed, the monks listened. Monks, then listen well and keep it well in mind, and I will tell you. Monks, for example, in the country of Ko sala, a sesame storehouse filled with twenty loads of sesame, piled high, from which someone takes one sesame seed every hundred years. Monks, that sesame storehouse in the country of Kosala, with twenty loads of sesame, would be exhausted very quickly by that method and would eventually come to an end, but I would not say that the lifespan of sentient beings born in the cold hells would come to an end. What is the measure of twenty cold hells? It is the measure of one cold hell bursting. What is the measure of twenty cold hells bursting? It is the measure of one Sotamtam. What is the measure of twenty Sotamtams? It is the measure of one Kyihutser. What is the measure of twenty Kyihutsers? It is the measure of one Achutser. What is the measure of twenty Achutsers? It is the measure of one bursting like an Utpala flower. What is the measure of twenty bursting like an Utpala flower? It is the measure of one bursting like a lotus flower. What is the measure of twenty bursting like a lotus flower? It is the measure of one bursting like a great lotus flower. The monk Kokalika, who belonged to Devadatta's group, harbored hatred towards the two monks Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, and therefore was born there. Monks, therefore, even a wooden stump without consciousness should not be made to suffer in its heart, what need is there to mention those with consciousness? Monks, you should train yourselves in this way. Monks, furthermore, do not find fault with each other. Monks, if you find fault with each other, you will decline. Monks, only I or someone like me can find fault with others.

Bhikkhus, therefore, if a person is to measure another person, then that person should examine that person by eight causes: conduct, the place of conduct, friends, companions, livelihood, hearing, the actions of the body, and the actions of speech. If examined in this way, whatever is displeasing to that person will be turned away. Bhikkhus, therefore, one should train in this way: Even towards a piece of wood touched by fire, we should not harbor hatred in our minds, how much more so towards beings endowed with consciousness? Bhikkhus, you should train in this way. Having spoken thus, at that time, the two bhikkhus Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana thought: We two should examine the bhikkhu Kokālika. Thinking thus, they disappeared from the Grove of Light and went to the Padma Hell, where a great fissure had opened up like a lotus. The two went there and saw that the bhikkhu Kokālika was there. Having seen him, they placed a mind of loving-kindness near him and entered the place where Kokālika was. Then Kokālika saw the two bhikkhus Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana from afar. Having seen them, he became even more displeased with them, thinking: Even though I am born here, these two who delight in evil and are endowed with the nature of evil have not abandoned me. Then, as soon as he arose with a disturbed mind, a tumor like a plowshare appeared on his tongue. Then the two thought: Alas, this foolish person is beyond cure. Thinking thus, they disappeared from the great Padma Hell and went to the Grove of Light. Having gone there, in order to cause disgust to those who practice the same Brahmā-conduct, they related exactly what kind of harm he had suffered there. Then, as soon as they heard it, most of the people felt disgust. Then the two, knowing with their minds that they had become disgusted, taught the Dharma that was in accordance with it, and thus some of those assemblies generated warmth, some generated the peak and endurance in accordance with truth, the supreme of worldly Dharma, and the samādhi of seeing, and some generated the stream.
