Because of the ripening of the karma of obstructing my giving and ordination in all ways, this one became poor and ordained only when old. Asked: Venerable one, what karma did this Brahmin do, that by the ripening of that karma, he pleased the Bhagavan, and having ordained in the Bhagavan's teaching, abandoned all afflictions and directly realized the state of an Arhat? The Bhagavan said: Having ordained in the teaching of the perfectly complete Buddha Light, there, he practiced celibacy for one lifetime, and at the time of death, he made the aspiration: May I please the Buddha Bhagavan who is the Brahmin boy prophesied by the perfectly complete Buddha Light, may I not displease him. May I, having ordained in his teaching, abandon all afflictions and directly realize the state of an Arhat. Monks, what do you think? At that time, at that time, the one who became ordained in the teaching of the perfectly complete Buddha Light was this very Brahmin. There, he practiced celibacy for one lifetime, and at the time of death, he made the aspiration: May I please the Buddha Bhagavan who is the Brahmin boy prophesied by the perfectly complete Buddha Light, may I not displease him. May I, having ordained in his teaching, abandon all afflictions and directly realize the state of an Arhat. Therefore, monks, I am perfectly equal to the perfectly complete Buddha Light, equal in power, equal in deeds, equal in methods, and having attained this, he pleased me and did not displease me, and having ordained in my own teaching, he abandoned all afflictions and directly realized the state of an Arhat. The story of the farmer: The story takes place while residing in Shravasti. At that time, in Shravasti, there lived a poor Brahmin who made a living by farming. That Brahmin's field was not far from Prince Jetavana's garden. That Brahmin was also quite diligent, and in the morning he

Formerly, he went to the field with a plow. His wife, the Brahmin woman, also took the Brahmin's (husband's) food and drink and went to the field. The two of them ate, and the Brahmin woman went home. That Brahmin was working in the field. When he was going home in the afternoon, the Brahmin and Brahmin woman both saw the Blessed One and the great Shravakas going back and forth from Kausambi. Having seen them, the two of them developed great joy towards the Blessed One and the great Shravakas. After they were happy, they said to each other, "All the sufferings we are experiencing now are because we did not accumulate merit in the past. If we two still do not do any virtuous deeds now, then after we two die from here, we will also become poor people." Then the Brahmin said, "Good wife, what wealth do we have with which to give alms and accumulate merit?" The wife said, "Husband, do not say that. This Shramana Gautama is a field of merit among two-legged beings. Even just showing a little respect to him will have great rewards. We two should offer food to Shramana Gautama. If we offer it to him, the cycle of poverty for us two will be cut off." The Brahmin said, "Do as you please. Go and prepare many clean and good foods and drinks, and come out tomorrow. When Shramana Gautama goes to Kausambi for alms, we two will sit in the field and offer him food." The Brahmin woman said, "Husband, I will do as you please." Having said that, the Brahmin woman went back to her house and prepared many clean and good foods and drinks. The next morning, she got up early and went to the field, facing the garden of Prince Jetasena, waiting for the Blessed One to come. The Buddha, the Blessed One, is the guide of the one and only path, skilled in both kinds of knowledge and wisdom.

I have attained. Skilled in the three unmingled mindfulnesses. Fearless with the four fearlessnesses. Liberated from the cycle of the five destinies. Skilled in the six sense bases. With the seven branches of enlightenment as the field of activity. Meditating on the eight liberations. Entering into the nine sequential abidings. Possessing the ten powers. Those who proclaim the great, true lion's roar, according to their nature, three times during the day and three times during the night, that is, six times day and night, with the Buddha's eye, they look upon the world: Who is declining? Who is prospering? Who is dwelling in poverty? Who has become miserable? Who is endowed with harm? Who is poor, miserable, and endowed with harm? Who is inclined towards the evil destinies? Who is falling into the evil destinies? Who has fallen into the evil destinies? Who will I rescue from the evil destinies and place in the heavenly realms, liberation, and fruition? Who is sinking in the mire of misconduct, pull him out by the hand? Who does not have the seven noble riches, make him wield power over the dominion of the seven noble riches? Who has not generated roots of virtue, make him generate them? Who has already generated roots of virtue, make him fully ripen them? Who has already fully ripened roots of virtue, pierce through with the sword of wisdom? For whom, should I make this world, adorned by the appearance of the Buddha, a world with fruit? Thus, the vision of wisdom operates. The ocean is the abode of aquatic creatures, the waves of time may cease. For the sons to be tamed, the Buddha's time never passes. Then, the Blessed One thought: The time for taming that Brahmin and his wife has arrived. After thinking this, in the early morning, wearing the lower garment and Dharma robes, carrying the alms bowl, he departed from Kausambi. The Brahmin and his wife saw the Blessed One from afar. Having seen him, the Blessed One went to them, and having gone, they bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One, and said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, would you please allow us to offer you the food we have prepared in this field? The Blessed One did not say anything to the couple.
