The fruit of non-return has been manifested. Some, having renounced, have manifested the state of being an Arhat. Some have planted the seed to become a Chakravartin king. Some have planted the seed to become a powerful Chakravartin, some to become Indra, some to become Brahma, some to become the Bodhi of a Hearer, some to become the Bodhi of a Pratyekabuddha, and some have planted the seed for the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete Bodhi. Most of those assemblies were established by being inclined towards the Buddha, inclined towards the Dharma, and inclined towards the Sangha. The Hundred Deeds, Thirteenth Chapter, called "Flesh Ball": The basis of the story is that [the Buddha] was residing in Shravasti. The venerable Maudgalyayana, according to the custom, would regularly wander in the hells of sentient beings, wander in the realm of pretas, wander among animals, wander among humans, and wander among the gods. Having returned, he would tell the people about the suffering of sentient beings in hell, such as cutting, chopping, beating, and cooking. Having returned, he would tell of the suffering of the pretas, such as hunger, thirst, burning, scorching, and cooking, as well as the suffering of animals caused by eating each other, and the suffering of humans caused by searching, toiling, and exhaustion, and the suffering of the gods, such as death, falling, scattering, and destruction. Having heard these things, they would become weary, and having become weary, they would gain even greater distinction. Then, one day, the venerable great Maudgalyayana set out to wander in the realm of pretas, and having disappeared from Shravasti, he arrived at the seashore, where he saw something like a ball of flesh, about the size of a clean storehouse. When it was on the ground, countless creatures with needle-like beaks were constantly eating it, and because those creatures ate so much, even if it flew into the sky, its entire body would be ablaze. Therefore, it experienced intense, unbearable, and burning pain.

Having seen a being experiencing unbearable suffering, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana thought: 'What karma did this being commit, that the ripening of that karma causes him to experience such suffering?' He saw that this person had ordained in the teaching of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light-Protecting, and had become a lazy bhikṣu. He alone enjoyed the property of the sangha, the property of the stupa, the permanent offerings, and the property of the sangha from the four directions. Some he even gave to relatives, and some he angrily burned with fire. It was the ripening of that karma that caused him to experience such suffering. Then, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana thought: 'Although I have also directly seen this karma, in order to cause many people to feel disgusted, I should inform the Blessed One.' So, he disappeared from the seashore and went to Shravasti. At that time, the Blessed One was sitting in the midst of hundreds of thousands of attendants, teaching the Dharma. Then, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana thought: 'Now is the time for me to inform the Blessed One in order to cause many people to feel disgusted.' So, he went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, and then sat to one side. Having sat to one side, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana said to the Blessed One: 'Venerable One, I often, according to my way, at different times, wander among the beings in hell, wander among the pretas, wander among the animals, wander among humans, wander among the gods. Then, having returned, I tell people about the suffering of the beings in hell, such as cutting, chopping, beating, and boiling. Then, having returned, I tell about the suffering of the pretas, such as hunger, thirst, burning, scorching, and boiling, and the suffering of animals caused by eating each other, and the suffering of humans, such as searching, anger, and fatigue, and the death, falling, and of the gods.'

Those sufferings of scattering and destruction, I will tell to the people, and for that reason, they will become disgusted. Having become disgusted in that way, they will also attain distinction above. Bhikshu, I set out to wander among the pretas, disappearing from where it could be heard, and arrived at the seashore. Bhikshu, there I saw a being whose body was like a lump of flesh, about the size of a large house, and it was on the ground. From afar, creatures with needle-like beaks were constantly devouring it. Because those creatures were devouring it so much, even if it were to rise into the sky, its entire body would burn. For that reason, it was experiencing intense, unbearable, hot, and unpleasant suffering. Bhikshu, what karma did that being commit that the ripening of that karma caused it to obtain such suffering? The Bhagavan said: Maudgalyayana's son, that being is a doer of evil deeds, and he has done many evil deeds. Maudgalyayana's son, in the past, that being in the teaching of the perfectly complete Buddha Light Protector went forth and became a bhikshu who gave teachings. There, he used the property of the sangha, the property of the stupa, the continuous sustenance, and the property of the sangha of the four directions all by himself. Some were accumulated and stored, but later he was afflicted by illness, and he gave those riches to his relatives. When those bhikshus saw this, they stopped him, and he thought to himself: If these people stop me, then in any case, I will make it so that it is of no benefit to them or to myself. Then, he became angry and burned all those riches with fire. After that, he died and transmigrated from there, and after dying, he was born as a preta. There, the ripening of the karma of using the property of the sangha, the property of the stupa, the continuous sustenance, and the property of the sangha of the four directions all by himself was that his body became like a lump of flesh, the size of a large house, and he was eaten by creatures with needle-like beaks. There, he used the property of the sangha, the property of the stupa, the continuous sustenance, and the property of the sangha of the four directions.
