Now to do. After returning, the sufferings of the hungry ghosts, such as hunger, thirst, burning, scorching, and boiling, and the sufferings caused by animals eating each other, and the sufferings of people's quarrels, anger, and fatigue, and the sufferings of the gods' death, falling, dissipation, and destruction, are all told to the people. Those who hear it will feel disgusted, and after feeling disgusted in this way, they will also gain special progress on top of it. Then one day, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana set out to wander in the realm of the pretas. He disappeared from Shravasti and went to the forest of Mount Bindu. There he saw a preta burning, burning intensely, burning everywhere intensely, burning like a single flame. If it were to go to the plain, then lions, tigers, leopards, bears, and so on with iron claws born from its karma would appear. They would cut, cut, and eat its flesh. Therefore, it would experience intense, unbearable, hot, and unpleasant feelings, and see them running back and forth. After seeing this, he thought in his mind: What karma did this being commit, that the ripening of that karma would cause him to experience such suffering? When he looked, he saw that he had gone forth in the teachings of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Kashyapa and had become a monk in charge of the sangha's affairs. When he was in charge of the sangha's affairs, he spent the sangha's property, the stupa's property, the permanent offerings, and the property of the sangha of the four directions as he pleased, and also gave to others. Then, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana thought: Although I have seen this karma with my own eyes, in order to make more people feel disgusted, I should report it to the Bhagavan. He disappeared from the forest of Mount Bindu and went to Shravasti. At that time, the Bhagavan was sitting in the midst of hundreds of retinues, teaching the Dharma. Then, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana said to the Bhagavan, the Bhagavan teaching the Dharma to hundreds of retinues.

He saw the offering. Having seen it, he thought: 'Now is the time for me to request the Blessed One for a prophecy regarding pretas.' So, he went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, he bowed to the Blessed One's feet with his head and sat down to one side. Having sat down to one side, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana said this to the Blessed One: 'Venerable One, according to my custom, I often wander in the hells of beings, wander among the pretas, wander among the animals, wander among humans, wander among the gods. Then, I return and tell people about the suffering of beings in hell, such as cutting, chopping, beating, and cooking. After returning, I also tell about the suffering of pretas, such as hunger, thirst, burning, scorching, and cooking, and the suffering of animals caused by eating each other, and the suffering of humans from toil and exhaustion, and the suffering of gods from death, falling, scattering, and destruction. Because of this, they become weary. Having become weary in this way, they also attain higher distinction. Venerable One, when I set out to wander among the pretas, I disappeared from Shravasti and arrived at a cave in the Bintya forest. Venerable One, there I saw a preta, large in body and burning, burning all over, completely and thoroughly burning, with flames blazing, and burning and parched. From the karma of that preta, lions, tigers, leopards, bears, and the like with iron teeth appeared. If those pretas were in the water, then crocodiles with iron teeth would appear. If they were in the sky, then crows and vultures with iron beaks would appear, and they would cut, cut, and eat the flesh of the preta. Therefore, that preta was experiencing intense, unbearable, hot, and unpleasant feelings, and I saw it running around. Venerable One, that being...'

If one commits a certain action, one will experience such suffering due to the maturation of that action. The Blessed One said: Maudgalyayana's son, that sentient being is an evildoer, he has committed many evil deeds. Maudgalyayana's son, in the past, in a bygone era, in this very fortunate eon, when the lifespan of beings was twenty thousand years, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, endowed with wisdom and conduct, the Sugata, the Knower of the World, the Tamer of Beings, the unsurpassed Teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One, named Light Protector, appeared in the world. He (Maudgalyayana's son) developed faith in the Buddha's teachings, and thus renounced the world and became a preaching monk. There, he urged many patrons and donors to beg for the sake of the Sangha and stupas. He was unable to protect the property of the Sangha, the property of the stupas, the regular offerings, and the property of the Sangha of the four directions. He used everything as he pleased and gave it to others. There, he was expelled from the Sangha, and he himself used it as he pleased and gave it to others. Due to the maturation of that action, he was born into the realm of pretas, where he was eaten by creatures living in the sky, living in the water, and living on the land. Then, immediately after hearing this, many people developed great revulsion. The Blessed One understood that their minds were filled with revulsion, and thus taught the Dharma that was in accordance with it. Therefore, some there generated warmth. Some generated patience in accordance with the peak and the truth, as well as the supreme mundane Dharma and the samadhi of the path of seeing. Some realized the fruit of stream-entry. Some realized the fruit of once-returning. Some realized the fruit of non-returning. Some, having renounced the world, realized the state of Arhatship. Some planted the seed to become a Chakravartin king. Some planted the seed to become a powerful Chakravartin, some planted the seed to become Indra, some planted the seed to become Brahma, some...
