Having found him, he heard the Dharma from him and directly realized the fruit of non-return. His wife was beautiful in appearance, pleasing to look at, and beautiful. Her husband said to her: Good woman, I have received the five bases of pure conduct from the Blessed One, so even if you stay here, I will give you food and clothing. But if you want another man, I will give you to him. She said: Master, I do not need another man, I will serve the master himself. That woman was admired by many people because of her beautiful appearance. A physiognomist living in that place thought: What way is there for me to meet that woman? Later, one day, he took a lot of gold and silver and some witnesses, and went to that layperson and said: Layperson, I have to go somewhere for a royal affair, I cannot send these things there, so I will entrust them to you for a while until I return. That layperson was honest by nature, so he took those things in front of the witnesses. Then the physiognomist handed those things to him, went back to his own house, and after a while, went to that layperson and said: Layperson, give me back the things I entrusted to you. That layperson returned the things to him without any witnesses. After that, he put those things in his own house, and again took the witnesses to that layperson and said: Layperson, give me back the king's property that I entrusted to you. He said: I have already returned it to you. The physiognomist said: I have not taken anything from you at all. The physiognomist said to those witnesses: Look at the behavior of this layperson. I handed the things to him in front of the witnesses, how could he give them only to me? So he took the layperson to the king's palace and defeated him with arguments.

He took him to his own house, beat him with wet branches, bound him tightly, broke all his ribs, and he died from that very cause. Then, the one with the nasal ailment, because that man had no son, collected all the household goods. He also took that wife to his own house and said: Virtuous woman, for your sake, I have done such an unseemly deed. Now this house is now your household. You are my wife. So he said. Then, the lay practitioner's wife said: I have not yet made offerings to his bones, how can I be with you? For a while, let me first make offerings to his bones, and then I will do as the lord pleases. As soon as he heard that, the one with the nasal ailment took the bones of that lay practitioner to the cemetery. After the bones were burned and piled up in one place, that woman jumped into the burning fire and died there as well. Then, the one with the nasal ailment was filled with remorse because of this, thinking, what should I do, what should I do, having done such an unseemly deed? I have not benefited from meeting the woman, and I have done such an unreasonable thing to this person, it is truly not right. Monks, what do you think? The one who had the nasal ailment at that time was the crocodile itself. He beat that lay practitioner with wet branches and broke his ribs. That man also died from that cause, and due to the ripening of that karma, the one with the nasal ailment was born in the sentient being hell. There, he experienced many years, many thousands of years of suffering in the sentient being hell, and after dying, he transmigrated, passed beyond that time, and was born in the animal realm. After dying and transmigrating from the animal realm, he was born only in the animal realm, and only obtained such suffering. Then, the venerable Maudgalyayana said this to the Bhagavan: Venerable one, when will that sentient being be liberated from that suffering? The Bhagavan said: Maudgalyayana, in the future, there will appear in the world a Tathagata, a fully enlightened Buddha who has transcended the level of hearers and solitary Buddhas, named Suvyakta. During that time, this sentient being

When this karma is exhausted, they will be reborn as humans, ordain in that teaching, abandon all afflictions, and directly realize the state of an Arhat, where their suffering will come to an end. Then, immediately after hearing this, many people felt great weariness. The Blessed One, knowing that their minds were weary, taught them the Dharma that was in accordance with it. Therefore, while sitting on that very seat, some generated warmth. Some generated the peak, the patience that accords with truth, the supreme of worldly Dharma, and the samadhi of seeing. Some directly realized the fruit of stream-entry. Some directly realized the fruit of once-returning. Some directly realized the fruit of non-returning. Some ordained and directly realized the state of an Arhat. Some generated the seed of becoming a wheel-turning monarch. Some generated the potential to become a powerful wheel-turning monarch, some to become Indra, some to become Brahma, some to become the enlightenment of a Shravaka, some to become the enlightenment of a Pratyekabuddha, and some generated the seed of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Among those assemblies, most were made to incline towards the Buddha, to flow towards the Dharma, and to rely on the Sangha. The second part: Subsequent Cutting (of Attachment). The basis of the story is that the Blessed One was residing in Jeta's Grove in Anathapindika's Park in Shravasti. The venerable son of Maudgalyayana regularly travels to the hell realms, to the realms of the pretas, to the realms of animals, to the realms of humans, and to the realms of gods. Having returned, he would relate to the people the sufferings of beings in hell, such as cutting, chopping, beating, and boiling. Having returned, he would relate the sufferings of the pretas, such as hunger, thirst, burning, scorching, and boiling, as well as the sufferings of animals, such as being eaten by one another, and the sufferings of humans, such as seeking, anger, and fatigue.
