Having traveled among beings, from being audible to disappearing, it stood on the seashore. There, the great ocean has three levels of depth: the first water abyss has twenty-eight thousand yojanas, and in it dwell creatures called crocodile-fish, whose bodies are seven hundred yojanas. When they are hungry, they rise up from the first water abyss, open their mouths and wait. In it, whatever creatures are smaller than them fall into their mouths along with the water. Then, when their bellies are full, they filter out the water and spit it out. The creatures dwelling in the belly then engage in the act of eating. The second water abyss has twenty-five thousand yojanas, and in it dwell creatures called crocodile-swallowing-fish, whose bodies are four thousand four hundred yojanas. When they are hungry, they rise up from the first and second water abysses and engage in the act of eating. The third water abyss also has twenty-five thousand yojanas, and in it dwell creatures called crocodile-swallowing-swallowing-fish, whose bodies are two thousand one hundred yojanas. When they are hungry, they rise up from between the first, second, and third water abysses and engage in the act of feeding. At that time, a creature called crocodile-swallowing-fish is born in the great ocean, and other crocodiles smaller than it gather around it, cutting off pieces from its body, some one krosha, some two kroshas, some three kroshas, and some one hundred yojanas, cutting and eating continuously. Therefore, it experiences intense, unbearable, burning, and unpleasant feelings. Exhausted by suffering, it comes to the shore seeking refuge. When it comes to the shore, five hundred yakshas born from its karma appear, and with five hundred axes, they cut off forty-one of its ribs over five hundred days. Then, when they have cut off all of its ribs in this way, it makes a great noise due to unbearable heat.

Having been scooped out, it was thrown back into the great ocean. The blood from being thrown churned and mixed the great ocean, making it appear like an ocean of blood. After it went into it, it was eaten by those creatures again. Whether it was on land or in the water, it experienced great suffering. Then, the Venerable Great Maudgalyayana thought: What karma did this being commit, that it has to experience such suffering? So he entered into meditation, from the first dhyana all the way to the highest dhyana, but he still could not know the end of its past lives. It died from the animal realm and was reborn as an animal again, only knowing that it was experiencing such suffering. He thought: Who else can prophesy this karma for me except for the Bhagavan? Because he is endowed with unobstructed wisdom vision and infinite wisdom vision. Then, he disappeared from the seashore and went to Shravasti. At that time, the Bhagavan was sitting among hundreds and thousands of attendants, teaching the Dharma. Then, the Venerable Maudgalyayana thought: Now is the time for me to report to the Bhagavan in order to make many people feel disgusted. So, he went to where the Bhagavan was, and upon arriving, he bowed to the Bhagavan's feet with his head, and then sat to one side. Having sat to one side, the Venerable Great Maudgalyayana said to the Bhagavan: Venerable, I often, according to my way, at various times wander in the hell realm, the preta realm, the animal realm, the human realm, and the deva realm. Then, I come back and tell people about the suffering of the hell beings, such as cutting, chopping, beating, and boiling. Then, I come back and tell people about the suffering of the pretas, such as hunger, thirst, burning, scorching, and boiling, and the suffering caused by animals eating each other, and the strife of humans.

and the sufferings of the gods, such as death, falling, scattering, and destruction, are told to the people. Therefore, they will become weary, and having become weary in this way, they will also attain higher achievements. Venerable one, I set out to wander in the animal realm, and having disappeared from where it could be heard, I arrived at the seashore. Venerable one, when I was there, I saw a being whose body was two thousand one hundred yojanas. Other crocodiles, much smaller than it, came to it and cut its body into pieces of one krosha, two kroshas, three kroshas, and even a hundred yojanas, and kept cutting and eating it. Therefore, it would experience intense, unbearable, hot, and unpleasant feelings. Then, exhausted by thirst, it came to the land seeking refuge. When it came to the land, five hundred yakshas born from its karma appeared, and they used five hundred axes to cut forty-one ribs for five hundred days. Then, when they had cut all its ribs in that way, it let out a loud cry because of unbearable thirst, and then went back into the great ocean. The blood that flowed from it stirred and mixed the great ocean, and it was like an ocean of blood. While it was in it, it was again eaten by those creatures. Whether it was on dry land or in the water, it experienced great suffering. Venerable one, what karma did that being do, that as a result of the ripening of that karma, it was born into the animal realm and experienced such suffering? Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Maudgalyayana's son: Maudgalyayana's son, that being was a doer of sinful deeds, and he did many sinful deeds. Maudgalyayana's son, in the past, there appeared in the world a perfectly enlightened Buddha named Mountain, who had transcended the level of hearers and solitary Buddhas. At that time, a householder had faith in the teachings of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Mountain.
