Then, the Rishi Ribhu said to the Rishi Keniya: "Rishi, who is this one called the Buddha?" The Rishi Keniya said: "Rishi, not far from the place where the Rishi Kapila resides, at the foot of the snowy mountains, on the banks of the Ganges River, a son was born among the Shakyas. Those Brahmin fortune-tellers prophesied that if he remains in the house, he will become a Chakravartin king. If he shaves his hair and beard, puts on colored robes, and goes forth from home to homelessness with only true faith, then he will awaken to unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment. As prophesied, he shaved his hair and beard, put on colored robes, and went forth from home to homelessness with only true faith, and he awakened to unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment, becoming the Buddha. Rishi, that is who is called the Buddha. Rishi, who is called the Sangha? Rishi, there are also wise Kshatriyas, wise Brahmins, wise householders, and wise monks. Among them, those who have gone forth following the Tathagata, Arhat, perfectly enlightened one, are called the Rishi Sangha. I will invite the Buddha and the Sangha of monks for a meal tomorrow." Then, the Rishi Ribhu said to the Rishi Keniya: "Rishi, where does the Bhagavan reside now?" The Rishi Keniya said: "Rishi, he resides in this very country of Aduma, in this very forest. If you wish to see him, Brahmin, go to that delightful forest, and you will see the guide, the Buddha, like the king of the Gandharvas." Then, the Rishi Ribhu, having heard the words of the Rishi Keniya, went to that forest. From afar, the Rishi Ribhu saw the Buddha Bhagavan, whose body was adorned with the thirty-two major marks of a great being, concealed, like the shape of fire, like a flame fueled by ghee, like a ghee lamp placed in a golden vessel.

Like a stupa adorned with various precious jewels, I saw the Buddha, the Bhagavan, who possessed clarity, purity, and immaculate qualities. Having seen him, I felt supreme joy. The kind of blissful experience that sentient beings have when they first see the Buddha, born from the cause of accumulating virtuous roots, is such that even after practicing calm abiding meditation for twelve years, such a blissful experience would not arise. Having seen him in that way, I went to where the Bhagavan was. Having arrived, I bowed to the feet of the Bhagavan with my head and sat before the Bhagavan to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Bhagavan understood his thoughts, latent tendencies, elements, consciousness, and nature, and taught him the Dharma that was in accordance with them. Therefore, the ascetic Mountain, while sitting on that very seat, immediately realized the truth and directly attained the fruit of non-return. Having seen the truth, he rose from his seat, draped his upper robe over one shoulder, and, with his palms joined, bowed towards where the Bhagavan was, and said to the Bhagavan: "Venerable one, if I am able to go forth and receive full ordination in the well-spoken Dharma-Vinaya, and obtain the status of a bhikshu, then I would also like to practice the pure conduct in the presence of the Bhagavan." The Bhagavan said: "Ascetic, have you informed your retinue?" The ascetic Mountain replied: "Venerable one, I have not informed them." The Bhagavan said: "Ascetic, then go and inform your retinue. Informing the retinue is like this: For those like you who are famous, known by all, and possess great merit, this is indeed excellent." Then, the ascetic Mountain went to where the Brahmin youths were staying, and having arrived, he said to the Brahmin youths: "Brahmin youths, know this: I wish to practice the pure conduct in the presence of the Bhagavan, what will you do?" They said: "Everything we need depends on the Khenpo (teacher), so if the Khenpo goes forth in the presence of the Shramana Gautama, we will also go forth after the Khenpo."

will appear. The hermit Mountain said: Brahmin boys, if you know that the time has come, do so. Then, the hermit Mountain, with five hundred attendants, went to where the Blessed One was, and upon arriving, bowed to the Blessed One's feet with his head, and said to the Blessed One: Venerable, I have persuaded my retinue, Venerable, if I can be ordained and receive full ordination in the Dharma and Vinaya well-spoken by you, and obtain the status of a Bhikshu, then I also wish to practice Brahmacharya in the presence of the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One said to them: Bhikshus, come. And said: Bhikshus, come, practice Brahmacharya. The moment the Blessed One spoke these words, their hair and beards were shaved off, and they became as if seven days had passed. Their conduct became as if they had received full ordination for a hundred years. In their hands they held begging bowls and water pots. Here it is said: By the Tathagata's words "Come", they shaved their heads and wore kasayas on their bodies. By the Buddha's intention, the clothes were bestowed, and instantly the senses were completely pacified. Then, the hermit Keniya prepared many clean and excellent foods and drinks that very night. The next morning, he got up early, laid out the seats, and filled the water for washing hands. Then, he urged the Blessed One with a messenger: Venerable, the time for the meal has come, please have your meal. The Blessed One, knowing that the time had come, accepted the invitation to go. Then, the Blessed One put on his lower garment and Dharma robes in the morning, took his begging bowl, and accompanied by the Bhikshu Sangha, with the Bhikshu Sangha leading the way, went to the residence of the hermit Keniya, and upon arriving, sat on the prepared seat. Then, the hermit Keniya, with his own hands, satisfied the Buddha and the Bhikshu Sangha with many clean and excellent foods and drinks, and offered them according to their needs. Then, the hermit Keniya saw the hermit Mountain, with five hundred attendants, ordained and sitting in that row. Having seen this, he said to the hermit Mountain: Hermit, you
