Thinking that he should enter into such a samadhi. Then, in order that the rakshasa might remember his previous lives, speak in human language, and be able to converse with the Blessed One, the Blessed One entered into such a samadhi. Then, the Blessed One said to the rakshasa: "Good Face, are you the Tripitaka?" He replied: "Blessed One, I am the Tripitaka." "Good Face, are you the Tripitaka?" "Sugata, I am the Tripitaka." He said: "Are the ripened fruits of the actions of body, speech, and mind experienced?" Blessed One, the ripened fruits of the actions of body, speech, and mind are experienced as unpleasant. Sugata, unpleasant experiences are experienced. He said: "Who is your unwholesome friend?" He replied: "It is my mind." Then, as soon as they heard this, many people were amazed, thinking: "Who is this sentient being who remembers his previous lives, speaks in human language, and can converse with the Blessed One?" It is difficult to approach the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones. Since they could not bring themselves to ask the Blessed One, they went to the venerable Ananda and asked: "Venerable, who is this sentient being who remembers his previous lives, speaks in human language, and can converse with the Blessed One?" The venerable Ananda said: "Ask the Blessed One." They said: "It is difficult to approach the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones. We cannot bring ourselves to ask." The venerable Ananda said: "It is difficult even for me to approach the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, but out of compassion for you, I will ask." Then, the venerable Ananda arranged his upper robe over one shoulder, and with his palms joined together, he bowed down in the direction of the Blessed One and said to the Blessed One: "Venerable, this sentient being who remembers his previous lives, speaks in human language, and asks questions of the Blessed One, and such harm

who is this who is also experiencing suffering? Then, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Ananda: Ananda, this sentient being is doing evil deeds. He has done many evil deeds. Ananda, in the past, beyond the realms of hearers and solitary Buddhas, a fully and perfectly enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, a Sugata, a knower of the world, a tamer of beings, unsurpassed, a teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One, named All-Supreme, appeared in the world. At that time, a householder gained faith in the teachings of the fully and perfectly enlightened Buddha All-Supreme, took refuge and adopted the precepts, and then he thought: I will abandon the life of a householder and become ordained in the teachings of the fully and perfectly enlightened Buddha All-Supreme. He abandoned the bonds of household life and became ordained in the teachings of the fully and perfectly enlightened Buddha All-Supreme. After he was ordained there, he studied the three baskets, possessed the courage of knowledge and liberation, and became a Dharma speaker. He obtained food, drink, bedding, seats, medicine, and medical supplies, and then he thought: With what I have obtained through gain and respect, I will surely benefit those who practice the ব্রহ্মচर्या (brahmacarya,梵行,pure conduct)。 So, he encouraged patrons and donors and engaged in offering to the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. At that time, on a mountain called Nokri, seventy-seven thousand monks, both learners and non-learners, wanted to commit to the summer retreat. They thought: We should appoint a steward first, and then commit to the summer retreat. They thought: Who can support our Sangha? They thought: This master of the three baskets is known to all, possesses great merit, and obtains food, drink, bedding, seats, medicine, and medical supplies. We should please him and have him be our steward, and then we will commit to the summer retreat. So, they went to him and said: Venerable, we are seventy

Seventy-seven thousand monks wished to observe the summer retreat on top of Mount Nok. If you can serve the Sangha according to the Dharma, then be happy. Relying on you, we will observe the summer retreat. The Tripitaka master said: Do not worry, I will prepare all your necessities. Then, as soon as they heard this, those monks went to the top of that mountain and observed the summer retreat relying solely on the Tripitaka master. Then, the Tripitaka master thought: I have told the monks not to worry, but if I just sit here, I will not be able to do it. I should go and urge the patrons and donors to prepare all the necessities for the Sangha. Thinking this, he put on his lower garment and robes in the morning, took his alms bowl, and set off for the village where laypeople lived. At that time, about five hundred merchants arrived safely by boat from the great ocean, unloaded their goods not far from that mountain, and settled down. The merchants saw that many monks were sitting on that mountain, and upon seeing them, they became very happy. The monk who was serving them also went to them. When they saw him, they said: Venerable one, where are you going? The Tripitaka master said: Seventy-seven thousand monks are sitting on this mountain, and they are observing the summer retreat relying on me. For their sake, I am going to urge the patrons and donors. The merchants said: Venerable one, do not worry, there is no need to do anything. We will prepare all their necessities. Then, they offered him a lot of gold and silver and said: Venerable one, from now on, you should prepare all the necessities for those monks. If this gold and silver is enough, that is good. If it is not enough, we will offer other gold and silver as well, as much as is needed, we will offer. At the end of the summer retreat, we will also offer clothes. The one who was serving said: I will do that. Then, he took the gold and silver and went to the monastery. When he saw the gold and silver, he developed attachment, and he hid the gold and silver.
