Then, they requested as the Blessed One had said. The physician Jivaka distributed the remaining ghee to the Sangha. At that time, none of the monks accepted it. Devadatta saw this and said, "Jivaka, what is that?" Jivaka said, "This is the remainder of the medicinal ghee called 'Iron Arrow' that the Blessed One consumed. I distributed it to the monks, but no one accepted it." Devadatta said, "I will take it. Give me as much as the ascetic Gautama drank." Jivaka said, "Devadatta, the Blessed One is tall and has great strength. You cannot digest that much." He said, "If the ascetic Gautama can drink it, why can't I?" Devadatta did not listen to Jivaka's words and drank as much ghee as the Blessed One had consumed. Then, the Blessed One performed the ritual of thin rice porridge that day and enjoyed the meal. After that, Devadatta heard that the Blessed One had performed the ritual of thin rice porridge and enjoyed the meal, so he said to Jivaka, "Jivaka, I also want to perform the ritual of thin rice porridge." Then, Jivaka looked at his face and said, "Devadatta, you cannot even digest ghee, how can you perform the ritual of thin rice porridge?" He said, "If the ascetic Gautama can drink it, why can't I?" After saying these words, he also performed the ritual of thin rice porridge. As soon as he drank it, he was struck by a stomach illness. Unable to bear the pain, he rolled around on the ground. In the world, there are friends, enemies, and neutrals. Some people came out of the well and said to the Venerable Ananda, "Venerable Ananda, Devadatta has a stomach illness and is about to die." Then, the Venerable Ananda, upon hearing this, became displeased due to compassion for his brother, and went to the Blessed One and reported, "Venerable Devadatta has a stomach illness and is about to die, please protect him." Then, as soon as the Blessed One heard this, he was immediately moved by great compassion and went to the place where Devadatta was, and after arriving, placed his hand on Devadatta's head and said, "Devadatta, with truth and truthful words, which word can

and you, Rahula, with folded hands, if my mind is calm, may you be free from illness with the words of truth and truth. Then, as soon as he said those words, Devadatta became happy. Then, the monks said to him: Devadatta, the Blessed One has done difficult things for you and has given precious life. He said: What is so strange about that? If he had not studied medicine, how could he have healed so many people? After saying these words, he only plotted to kill the Blessed One. Then, the monks realized this and reported to the Blessed One: Venerable, if the Blessed One protects Devadatta, he will only strive to kill the Blessed One and plot ways to kill him. Venerable, Devadatta is ungrateful, unappreciative, and one who betrays kindness. The Blessed One said: Not only now, but also in the past, he was ungrateful, unappreciative, and one who betrayed kindness. Listen. Monks, in the past, in a certain secluded village, there lived a poor man who made a living by selling grass and wood. Later, one day, he went to the mountain to cut firewood, and as he went to the mountain, it snowed, and he was afflicted by the cold wind and troubled by the harsh environment, so he entered a large cave. At that time, the Bodhisattva was born as a bear. Bodhisattvas, even if their bodies fall, their minds will not fall. He has a great self, a loving nature, full of compassion, kind to sentient beings, and has a non-harming mind. He does not wish to harm anyone and lives on roots and fruits. He accumulated roots and fruits in the cave, and when afflicted by the cold wind, he entered the cave to live. The man entered the cave and saw him. The moment he saw him, he was very frightened and thought: I will surely die in his hands. I cannot escape from his hands. Then, the Bodhisattva saw him and thought: This man

Realizing that the bear was also afraid of danger and was weak, out of compassion for it, the Bodhisattva spoke in human language, saying, "Friend, do not be afraid! You do not need to fear me." Having said this, the Bodhisattva protected the person with his own body and gave him roots and fruits. In this way, for seven days, the Bodhisattva protected the person with his own body and nourished him with roots and fruits. After seven days, in that place free from evil, the Bodhisattva admonished the person, saying, "Hey, go home, I have many enemies who will come to kill me for my flesh, so do not tell anyone that I am here." Having said this, the Bodhisattva released the person. Then, the person carrying firewood, set off towards the vicinity of the hermitage village. From that hermitage village, two hunters were preparing to go chase after escaped wild animals. They saw the person coming carrying firewood, and the two thought, "This person has returned from this hermitage after seven days, where has he been and what has he eaten for these seven days?" So the two asked the person. The person also told them the story in detail. Immediately after hearing this, the two said to the person, "Hey, come here and show us where the bear is, and we will kill the bear and give you a share of the bear meat." Then the person thought, "Although the bear has protected me for seven days, it is of no use to me, and there is no food in my house. If I tell them, my family will have plenty to eat for many days." So he said to the two people, "Hey, I will show you where the bear is." Having said this, he showed the two hunters the cave where the bear was. The two shot the bear with a poisoned arrow, and the Bodhisattva was afflicted with a fatal illness from the poisoned arrow. As he was about to die, he spoke these verses: "Living in the dense forest, What have I taken from whom? Eating grass, roots, and fruits, Not harming anyone, The time of death has come, Now I can do nothing. The joys and sorrows of beings, are karma."
