They would do this, saying: 'Hey Gautama, come here!' 'Hey Gautama, it is good that you have come!' 'Hey Gautama, please sit on the seat that has been prepared!' Then, the Blessed One thought to himself: 'Alas, these foolish people have lost their own internal rules.' Thinking this, he sat on the prepared seat. At that time, the five monks would only address the Blessed One by names, lineage, and age. Then, the Blessed One said to the five monks: 'Monks, do not address the Tathagata by names, lineage, and age. It will cause you long-term harm, disadvantage, and suffering.' Why is that? Monks, if anyone addresses the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One, by names, lineage, and age, it will cause them long-term harm, disadvantage, and suffering.' They said: 'Gautama, your previous conduct, practice, and asceticism did not lead you to attain anything beyond human, ultimate, superior wisdom, insight, or the experience of bliss. Now that you indulge yourself, become lazy, abandon asceticism, and now you eat a lot of food, eat rice and tsampa, nourish your body with ghee and sesame oil, and bathe in warm water, how can you possibly attain liberation?' Then, the Blessed One said to the five monks: 'Monks, have you seen the Tathagata's appearance change from before to now, and the senses become different?' They replied: 'Yes, Gautama, we have seen it.' The Blessed One said: 'Monks, these two extremes should not be cultivated, approached, or fully relied upon by those who have gone forth. Which two? One is indulging in the pleasures of desires, which is base, vulgar, the way of ordinary people, and contrary to the noble Dharma; the other is indulging in self-mortification, which is painful and not the way of the noble Dharma.'

Whatever is associated with harm, without relying on these two extremes, there exists the Middle Way that leads to direct knowledge, leads to perfect enlightenment, leads to nirvana, generates the eye, generates wisdom, and leads to peace. What is the Middle Way? It is the Noble Eightfold Path, namely, right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. Then, the Blessed One instructed the group of five monks with this agreement, and they acted according to this agreement. In the morning, when the Blessed One taught the two monks of the group of five, three monks would go into the city for alms. Whatever the three brought back, all six would live on that. In the evening, when the Blessed One taught the three monks of the group of five, two monks would go into the city for alms. Whatever the two brought back, the group of five would live on that. The Blessed One also ate at the proper mealtime. Then, the Blessed One said to the group of five monks: Monks, from my proper attention to the dharmas not previously heard, I thought: This is the noble truth of suffering! The eye arose, wisdom arose, knowledge arose, and intelligence arose. Monks, from my proper attention to the dharmas not previously heard, I thought: This is the origin of suffering! This is the cessation of suffering! This is the noble truth of the path that leads to the cessation of suffering! The eye arose, wisdom arose, knowledge arose, and intelligence arose. Monks, from my proper attention to the dharmas not previously heard, I thought: This noble truth of suffering, it should be fully known by direct knowledge! The eye arose, wisdom arose, knowledge arose, and intelligence arose. Monks, from my proper attention to the dharmas not previously heard, I thought: This noble truth of the origin of suffering, it should be abandoned by direct knowledge! The eye arose, wisdom arose, knowledge arose, and intelligence arose. Monks, from my proper attention to the dharmas not previously heard,
