Having completely abandoned samsara, one will be able to exhaust suffering. Thus it is proclaimed. Then those rays of light circled the three-thousand great thousand world realm, following behind the Blessed One. If the Blessed One wished to prophesy past actions, they would not appear on the side of the Blessed One's robe. If he wished to prophesy future actions, they would not appear in front. If he wished to prophesy that beings would be born in hell, they would not appear on the soles of his feet. If he wished to prophesy that they would be born as animals, they would not appear on the heels of his feet. If he wished to prophesy that they would be born as pretas, they would not appear on his toes. If he wished to prophesy that they would be born as humans, they would not appear on his knees. If he wished to prophesy that they would become powerful wheel-turning kings, they would not appear on the palm of his left hand. If he wished to prophesy that they would become wheel-turning kings, they would not appear on the palm of his right hand. If he wished to prophesy that they would be born in the heavens, they would not appear on his navel. If he wished to prophesy that they would attain the enlightenment of a Hearer, they would not appear in his mouth. If he wished to prophesy that they would attain the enlightenment of a Pratyekabuddha, they would not appear in the hair between his eyebrows. If he wished to prophesy that they would attain the unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, they would not appear on the crown of his head. Then those rays of light circumambulated the Blessed One three times, and disappeared into the hair between the Blessed One's eyebrows. Then, the venerable Ananda, with his palms joined, asked the Blessed One: "Various lights, interwoven with a thousand colors, many have come forth from the door of your mouth, illuminating all directions, just as the rising sun does." Again, he asked in verse: "The Buddha, free from clamor, not delighting in fatness, having abandoned [it], is the sacred source for beings. The victorious ones, the conquerors of enemies, do not show a smile like the root of a lotus and the color of a conch shell without cause or condition. With steadfast wisdom, you know the right time, O king of ascetics."

I, the listeners, the seekers, pray that the doubts of the good ones regarding the words of the supreme teacher, the Victorious One, be dispelled. Like the ocean and the king of mountains, steadfast, the protectors, the perfectly enlightened ones, do not smile without reason. For whose sake does the hero show a smile? Therefore, the great assembly should listen to you. The Blessed One said: Kungawo, it is indeed so. It is indeed so, Kungawo, the Tathagatas, the Arhats, the perfectly enlightened Buddhas, do not smile without cause or condition. Kungawo, have you seen these friends showing such respect to me? Venerable one, I have seen it. Kungawo, these friends, by completely giving away the roots of virtue, the aspiration, and the Dharma of generosity, will not fall into lower realms for thirteen kalpas. For thirteen kalpas, they will take rebirth and wander among gods and humans. In their final existence and final place, they will obtain a human birth. Then, they will renounce, and without a teacher or transmission, they will realize the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, and directly realize the Bodhi of a Pratyekabuddha. All of them will become "Pratyekabuddhas without aspiration." This is their Dharma of generosity. Then, the monks asked the Blessed Buddha: Venerable one, what deeds did the Blessed One perform, that as a result of that karma, five hundred friends show such respect with Utpala flowers, lotuses, Kumuda flowers, and white lotuses? The Blessed One said: Monks, the Tathagata himself did and accumulated such karma. Monks, the deeds done and accumulated will not ripen in the external realm of earth, nor will they ripen in the realm of water, fire, or wind. The virtuous and non-virtuous deeds done and accumulated will only ripen in the aggregates, realms, and sources that are grasped. The actions of sentient beings will not be wasted even for a hundred kalpas.

When the time comes for ripening, it will naturally bear fruit. Monks, in the distant past, countless eons ago, there appeared in the world a Fully Enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, a Sugata, knower of the world, tamer of men, unsurpassed, teacher of gods and humans, Buddha, Bhagavan, named Dipamkara. Thereafter, the Fully Enlightened Buddha Dipamkara, having traveled through various regions, arrived at the royal palace named Dipamkara. At that time, in the royal palace of Dipamkara, a king named Dipamkara reigned, and during his reign, there was wealth, prosperity, happiness, abundance, a full populace, many people, strife, battles ceased, conflicts, internal strife, thieves, diseases, and famine were absent, and there was plenty of rice, sugarcane, cattle, and buffalo. There was no harm, and he ruled the kingdom as if caring for an only beloved child. Thereafter, King Dipamkara, in order to have the Fully Enlightened Buddha Dipamkara's feet touch the ground, invited him into the city. Beside King Dipamkara, there was a prince named Dhanin, and the king sent a messenger to him, saying, "I have invited the Fully Enlightened Buddha Dipamkara into the city to have his feet touch the ground, and offerings must be made to him, so come." At that time, Prince Dhanin had also been making offerings for twelve years, and at the end of the offerings, there were prepared in this way: a golden staff, golden balls, a golden plate, a bed adorned with four kinds of jewels, five hundred karshapanas, and a maiden adorned with all ornaments, thus five great gifts were prepared. At that time, in another place, there lived two Brahmin youths who were learning the Vedas from a Khenpo, and they were thinking that for the Khenpo who taught the Dharma, they should also offer the Khenpo's fee, and for the teacher, they should also offer the teacher's fee. Thereafter, they heard that Prince Dhanin was making offerings.
