In Shravasti, there lived about five hundred friends. To enjoy the flowers that bloomed in each season, they would go to the garden to play and revel, indulging in joy and merriment. Later, the utpala flowers, lotuses, water lilies, and white lotuses blossomed. To enjoy these flowers, they adorned themselves with all sorts of ornaments, weaving garlands, headdresses, earrings, and strings of beads from utpala flowers, lotuses, water lilies, and white lotuses, each holding a cup of utpala wine, and accompanied by various musical instruments and drums, they set out from Shravasti to the garden. The Blessed One, out of compassion for them, also put on his robes and Dharma garments in the morning, and carrying his alms bowl, went to Shravasti for alms. Those friends saw from afar the Buddha, the Blessed One, adorned and radiant with the thirty-two marks of a great being, like a body of fire, like a flame fueled by ghee, like a lamp placed in a golden vessel, like a stupa adorned with various precious jewels, they saw the Buddha, the Blessed One, who was bright in wisdom, immaculate, and pure. Having seen him, they felt great joy towards the Blessed One. Having felt joy, they went to where the Blessed One was, bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One, offered utpala flowers, lotuses, water lilies, and white lotuses to the Blessed One, and accompanied by musical instruments and drums, circumambulated the Blessed One three times before departing. At that time, the Blessed One smiled. This is the nature of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, when they smile. At that time, blue, yellow, red, and white rays of light emanated from his face. Some rays went downwards, and some went upwards. Those that went downwards illuminated sentient beings in the hells, the Reviving Hell, the Black Line Hell, the Crushing Hell, the Crying Hell, the Great Crying Hell, the Burning Hell, the Very Hot Hell, and the Uninterrupted Hell.

I, the one with blisters, the one with burst blisters, the one with broken teeth, the one called "Kyihud," the one called "Achhu," the one split like an উৎপল (Sanskrit Devanagari: उत्पल, Sanskrit Romanization: utpala, literal meaning: blue lotus), the one split like a lotus, having become a great split like a lotus. In those hot hells of sentient beings, it becomes cool and descends. In those cold hells of sentient beings, it becomes warm and descends. Thus, the differences in suffering of those sentient beings are all pacified. Then, they think like this: Alas, have we died and transmigrated from here? Or have we been born elsewhere? Then, in order to generate faith in them, the Bhagavan manifests emanations. Having seen the emanations, they think like this: Alas, we have neither died and transmigrated from here, nor have we been born elsewhere, but by the power of this unprecedented appearance of sentient beings, the differences in our suffering have been pacified. Then, they develop great joy in that emanation, and thus, the karma of experiencing the hells of sentient beings is exhausted, and among gods and humans, they will take rebirth where they are fit to be vessels of truth. Those who go upwards are the gods of the retinue of the Four Great Kings, the Thirty-three, the No-Conflict, the Joyful, the Enjoying Emanations, the Controlling Others' Emanations, the Brahma Retinue, the Brahma Attendants, the Great Brahma, the Small Light, the Immeasurable Light, the Clear Light, the Small Virtue, the Immeasurable Virtue, the Universal Virtue, the Cloudless, the Merit-Born, the Great Fruit, the Non-Great, the Non-Afflicted, the Manifestly Beautiful, the Supremely Visible, and having gone to the gods of Akanistha, they proclaim the sound of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness. They also recite two verses: Strive for definite emergence, engage in the Buddha's teachings. Like an elephant destroying a reed hut, destroy the army of the Lord of Death. Whoever in this Dharma and Discipline, conducts themselves with mindfulness,
