If you do so, monks, I, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, am completely equal to the Light Buddha, equal in power, equal in deeds, and equal in methods, having attained it. Therefore, he has pleased me and has not displeased me. He himself has also renounced in my teachings, abandoning all defilements, and has realized the Arhatship. The story called "Cowherd" is as follows: The Buddha was residing in Jeta Grove in Shravasti. At that time, King Prasenajit invited the Buddha and the Sangha of monks for three months, prepared all the necessary items in Prince Jeta's garden, and set up sheds for cows and buffaloes next to Prince Jeta's garden, so that the monks could enjoy milk and buffalo milk. In this way, for three months, the king served the Buddha and the Sangha of monks with all the necessary items. Finally, he offered the Buddha and the Sangha of monks food with a hundred flavors, and offered the Blessed One a robe worth one hundred thousand gold coins. He also offered each of the other monks all the necessary items. Then, the king sent all the cowherds and buffalo herders back to their respective places, and he himself returned. After that, the cowherds thought: "Although this king is the perfect sovereign lord of the earth, he still gives alms and does meritorious deeds. But we are servants of others, looking at the faces of others, eating the gardens of others, and living by this. Like him, obtaining such a position, all these are the result of the three actions of giving, taming, and correctly observing the precepts. We must definitely take up and abide by a little bit of virtuous Dharma." So, five hundred cowherds invited the Buddha and the Sangha of monks, prepared many clean and beautiful foods and drinks, and the next morning they got up early, filled water jugs, and sent someone to urge the Blessed One: "Venerable One, the time has come, please have your meal." The Blessed One knew that the time had come, and agreed to go. So, the Blessed One put on his skirt and Dharma robes in the morning, and took his bowl.

Accompanied by a retinue of monks, and with the Sangha of monks leading the way, the Blessed One proceeded to the vicinity of the cowherds' cattle pens and grazing grounds, and sat down on a prepared seat. Then, when those cowherds knew that the Buddha and the Sangha of monks were dwelling in comfort, they brought from afar many clean and excellent foods and drinks, satisfied them with milk and water buffalo dairy products, offered them whatever they wished, and when the meal was finished, the bowls were put away. Knowing that the Buddha had washed his hands, they took very low seats and sat before the Blessed One in order to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One, understanding the thoughts, habits, faculties, nature, and wisdom of those five hundred cowherds, taught them the Dharma that was in accordance with them. Therefore, those five hundred cowherds and their retinues, while sitting on that very seat, destroyed the twenty high peaks of the mountain of "belief in a self" with the vajra of wisdom, and realized the fruit of stream-entry. They also saw the truth and requested, "Blessed One, we wish to go forth into the teachings of the Tathagata rather than remain in our homes, and we will strive, practice, and endeavor to cross over the rivers and to completely transcend the bonds." After they had thus requested, they informed King Clear, entrusted the herds of cattle to other cowherds, dismissed their families, came to the Blessed One, bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One, and said to the Blessed One, "Venerable One, if it is possible to go forth and receive full ordination in the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, and to obtain the status of a monk, we also wish to practice the pure conduct here with the Blessed One." Then, the Blessed One said to them, "Come, monks." The Blessed One said, "Monks, come, practice the pure conduct." As soon as they heard this, their hair fell out immediately, and they were clothed in robes. Their hair and beards were shaved, and they appeared as if they had been ordained for a hundred years, as if it had been seven days. La
