At that time, the king of the land of Pideha, who became powerful, and who abided in the practice of Bodhi, was myself. At that time, the queen was this Earth Protector Mother. At that time, the king of Kashi, named Brahma-datta, was this Devadatta. At that time, he also trampled on this person in front of the crowd and greatly humiliated him. The one called Hair-knot Mother: When the Bodhisattva was only dwelling in the Tushita heaven, in the land of Shakya, King Lion-cheek became the king. He and the queen played together, enjoying joy and pleasure, and successively gave birth to four sons and four daughters, namely, Pure Rice, White Rice, Grain Rice, Ambrosia Rice, as well as Pure Woman, White Woman, Grain Woman, and Ambrosia Woman. At that time, in the land of Sponging, King Shakya Good-Awakening resided. He and the queen played together, enjoying joy and pleasure, and gave birth to two daughters. One was named Illusion, and the other was named Great Illusion. Then, the two of them were raised and nurtured with milk, yogurt, butter, ghee, and the essence of ghee, growing vigorously like lotuses in the sea. Then, the diviners looked at the two of them and prophesied: From the daughter Illusion, a son with perfect marks will be born, and from the Great Illusion, a Chakravartin king will be born. The hair of the two of them grew luxuriantly like sesame oil dripping into water. Then, King Lion-cheek heard this and sent a messenger to King Good-Awakening, saying: Please give your two daughters to be the wives of my son. Although the Shakyas have such an internal rule that no one may take two wives of equal status, if I can make the Shakyas believe, I will take both of them later. After sending this message, Lion-cheek pleaded with the Shakyas, and the two daughters, like those living at home, were taken as the queens of King Pure-Rice according to the Dharma of the household. There, King Good-Awakening made the daughter named Hair-knot Mother the attendant of the two of them.

So it is. Then, when the Bodhisattva was born, seven days after his birth, Maya died, and after her death, she was reborn in the heaven of the Thirty-Three. The girl with the braided hair, separated from her, grabbed Maya's hair and grieved greatly, rolling around and wailing, beating her chest. No one could soothe her grief. Then, when the Bodhisattva grew up, he saw an old man, a sick man, and a dead man, and then he went into the forest to practice. For six years he practiced austerities and attained unsurpassed wisdom. Finally, he performed the act of taming and went to the place of the Shakya country (now in Nepal). After arriving there, he converted the Shakyas. He also converted Mahaprajapati Gautami. He also converted the girl with the braided hair, who also abandoned all defilements and directly realized Arhatship. The Blessed One declared her to be the foremost of those who strive diligently. Then the monks asked the Blessed One: "What deeds did the venerable braided-hair girl commit, that by the ripening of those deeds, she was born into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous Shakya family? And what deeds did she commit, that she became subject to the orders of other female servants?" The Blessed One replied: "It is due to the power of aspiration. Where did she make this aspiration?" Monks, in the past, in a bygone era, ninety-one kalpas ago, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Well-Gone, Knower of the World, Guide of beings to be tamed, Unsurpassed, Teacher of gods and humans, Buddha, Blessed One, named Vipashyin appeared in the world. After attaining unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment, he went to the city of Bandhumati, where two sisters offered him food. One of them made the aspiration: 'May I give birth to such a precious man, and may I please him, and may I not displease him.' The other girl made the aspiration: 'Wherever I am born'

May you and he become brothers in that and that life! May a person like me support that precious man! They said that. The daughter of the barber of those two brothers was also there, and the girl also heard the two of them making such a prayer. As soon as she heard it, she also paid homage to the perfectly complete Buddha Vipashyin, and prayed, "Alas! May I also, through this root of virtue, wherever these two are born, become the barber of these two and serve them, may I please these two precious sons, and may I not displease them!" She made such a prayer there. Monks, what did she do? She also pleased the Blessed One and did not displease him, she went forth in the Blessed One's teachings, abandoned all defilements, and manifested the state of an Arhat, and was also shown by the Blessed One to be the best of those who exert effort. The Blessed One taught: This person also went forth in the teachings of the perfectly complete Buddha Kashyapa, and the nun from whom she went forth was shown by the perfectly complete Buddha Kashyapa to be the best of those who exert effort. Then she practiced pure conduct for one lifetime, and at the time of death made a prayer: Thus, although I have practiced pure conduct in the teachings of the perfectly complete Buddha Kashyapa, I have not obtained any accumulation of merit, may I please the Brahmin boy prophesied by the perfectly complete Buddha Kashyapa, that Buddha, the Blessed One! May I not displease him! May I go forth in his teachings, abandon all defilements, and manifest the state of an Arhat! Just as the nun whom I served was shown by the perfectly complete Buddha Kashyapa to be the best of those who exert effort, so may I also be shown by Shakyamuni, that king of the Shakyas, to be the best of those who exert effort! Monks, what do you think? At that time
