Having attained the power of clairvoyance, when he rubbed the feet of the venerable Shariputra with oil, he saw the scar on the venerable Shariputra's foot. Having seen it, he asked: "Venerable, how did this scar come to be?" The venerable Shariputra said: "Child, think about how this scar came to be." Then, through his own power, he saw that he had been a dog in a previous life, and he thought, "From where did I die and get reborn as a dog?" He saw that he had died as a dog and was reborn as a dog. Similarly, when he looked back five hundred lifetimes, he saw that he had died as a dog and was reborn only as a dog. He also thought about the future, wondering, "If the venerable one had not taken care of me, where would I be reborn after dying from that life?" He saw that after that dog died, he would be reborn as a puppy. Similarly, when he looked into the future for five hundred lifetimes, he saw that after dying as a dog, he would be reborn only as a puppy. Then he thought, "This one has freed me from falling into evil and has placed me in the ultimate attainment of the eternal and the bliss of Nirvana. The venerable one is one who toils for me." Thinking that there was no other way to repay the venerable one's kindness other than serving him, he thought, "If I take the full ordination, I will not be able to gradually serve the venerable one. Instead, I will remain a novice for the rest of my life and serve him." Thinking this, he said to the venerable Shariputra: "Venerable, I will serve the venerable one for as long as I live." "Child, do as you please." Later, the monks said to him: "Small Eyes, why don't you take full ordination?" He said: "I must repay the kindness of the venerable one. I will remain a novice for as long as I live and serve him." They said: "What special kindness has the venerable one shown you?" Then he told the monks the story in detail, and the monks reported to the Buddha, the Bhagavan: "Venerable, what karma did Small Eyes commit that caused him to be reborn as a dog as a result of that karma?"

སྐྱེས་ལ། If the venerable Shariputra had not thought about it, he was born as a dog for five hundred lifetimes. What karma did he do that, as a result of that karma, he died as a dog and was reborn among humans as a wealthy and rich family with great enjoyment? He pleased the Blessed One and did not displease him. He renounced the Blessed One's teachings, abandoned all defilements, and directly attained Arhatship. What karma did he do that, as a result of that karma, his eyes became small? The Blessed One said: Monks, these small eyes are the result of past actions and accumulations. Monks, the actions that have been done and accumulated will not ripen in the external earth element, nor will they ripen in the water element, fire element, or wind element. The virtuous and non-virtuous actions that have been done and accumulated will only ripen in the aggregates, elements, and sources that have been grasped. The actions of sentient beings will not be exhausted even in hundreds of kalpas. When the time of gathering comes, they will ripen into fruit. Monks, in the past, in this very fortunate kalpa, when the life span of beings reached twenty thousand years, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Sugata, the Knower of the World, the Tamer of Men, the unsurpassed Teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One, named Light Protector (འོད་སྲུང་།), appeared in the world. At that time, in the city of Varanasi (བཱ་རཱ་ཎ་སཱི་), there lived a wealthy and rich householder with great enjoyment, possessing vast holdings, possessing the wealth of Vaishravana, comparable to the wealth of Vaishravana. Later, his wife became pregnant, and after nine or ten months, she gave birth to a handsome, pleasing, and beautiful boy. When he grew up, he developed faith in the teachings of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light Protector, and he asked his parents for permission to renounce. After renouncing, he studied the three pitakas and became a Dharma speaker who was well-versed in doctrine and possessed eloquence, possessing robes, food, bedding, seats, medicine, and medical supplies.

Having obtained it, he thought, "With whatever wealth and respect I have obtained, whatever wealth I have obtained, I will surely benefit those who practice Brahmacharya with me." Thinking this, he served the Sangha according to the Dharma. Then one day, it was the turn of an Arhat Bhikshu to provide the afternoon meal. After distributing the meal to the Sangha, he felt physically tired and returned to his room, sitting in the lotus position. At this time, the patrons of the person in charge of the meal needed the meal, and he said to the other Bhikshus, "Whose turn is it to provide the meal today?" They said, "It is the turn of so-and-so Bhikshu." Then, the person in charge of the meal became angry, closed his eyes, and said, "It's that guy with those kinds of eyes." After saying these words, he ran to where the Arhat was and said, "Venerable, I make the patrons and donors happy for your sake, and serve you with all necessities, but you enjoy the food I give with faith, and go back to your den to sleep like a dog?" Then, that Arhat thought, "This affliction has become degraded and diminished, and it would be bad if I were to wander in Samsara and suffer great pain." Thinking that he must stop him, he said to the person in charge of the meal, "Venerable, do you know who I am? Do you know who you are?" He said, "I know, you are also a renunciate, and I am also a renunciate." The Arhat said, "Although we two renunciates are similar, you are an ordinary person bound by all bonds, and I am an Arhat who is completely liberated from all bonds. You have spoken harsh words, so confess your faults. You will wander in Samsara and suffer great pain." Immediately upon hearing these words, the person in charge of the meal felt great remorse. Having felt great remorse, he prostrated at the feet of that Bhikshu, asked for forgiveness, and served the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha even more. He lived his whole life...
