Also, he renounced in the doctrine of the Tathagata Samyaksambuddha Light Treasury. The Non-returner said: Abandon the household, let us both renounce. He said: So be it. Then he abandoned the household, and both renounced in the doctrine of the Tathagata Samyaksambuddha Light Treasury. The Non-returner, having renounced, abandoned all afflictions and directly realized Arhatship. The other, having renounced, practiced celibacy for one lifetime and made a prayer at the time of death: May I not be the recipient of the karmic result of speaking harsh words to such a pure sentient being. Even if the result of that karma were to ripen on me a hundredfold, may all negativity be eliminated and goodness arise immediately upon generating the mind of renunciation. Thus, although I have renounced and practiced celibacy for one lifetime, and have not attained any qualities, may I please the Tathagata Samyaksambuddha Light Treasury, who prophesied about the Brahmin boy, that Bhagavan Buddha. May I not displease him. May I renounce only in his doctrine, abandon all afflictions, and directly realize Arhatship. Monks, what do you think? The monk who renounced in the teachings of the Tathagata Samyaksambuddha Light Treasury at that time was this cripple. Because of the karma of speaking harsh words to his brother there, he became a cripple in every place where he was born. He regretted it and, having renounced, practiced celibacy for one lifetime and made a prayer at the time of death: May I not be the recipient of the karmic result of speaking harsh words to such a pure sentient being. Even if the complete maturation of that karma were to ripen on me a hundredfold, may all my negativity be eliminated and goodness arise immediately upon generating the mind of renunciation. The result of his making that prayer is that now, immediately upon generating the mind of renunciation, all the limbs of his body have become complete. Having made that prayer there, the Tathagata Samyaksambuddha...

By the Buddha Light-Protection prophesying to the Brahmin boy, May that Bhagavan Buddha, whom I may please, and may I not displease. In that very doctrine, may I renounce, abandon all defilements, and manifest the state of an Arhat. Monks, I have attained the same perfect enlightenment as the Buddha Light-Protection, the same power, the same deeds, and the same skillful means. This one has pleased me and has not displeased me, and having renounced in my doctrine, has abandoned all defilements and manifested the state of an Arhat. Then the monks asked the Blessed One: Venerable One, behold, these five hundred wild men have met this monkey and renounced, abandoning all defilements and manifesting the state of an Arhat. The Blessed One said: Monks, not only now, but also in the past, these five hundred wild men met this monkey and renounced, generating the four dhyanas and the five superknowledges, listen to that. Monks, in the past, there were about five hundred wild men dwelling in a certain forest. They destroyed a mountain village and took much wealth and food from there. This man also dwelt in that same forest, and those wild men, because they did not worship the yaksha, seized him. They entered that forest and smeared the yaksha's face with cow dung, placed a full vase and this man in front of it, and holding sharp swords, sat in front of the yaksha and made offerings. That man thought, 'Are they going to kill me and use me as an offering to the yaksha?' He became very frightened and terrified. Being frightened and terrified, he thought: 'To whom should I go for refuge? Who will grant me the gift of sparing my life?' At that time, not far from that mountain village, in a hermitage, a sage was dwelling. At that time, that man remembered that sage, and with a faithful mind, he prayed to that sage: Blessed

The one who lacks does not see, does not know, and does not comprehend anything in his mind. Alas, please grant me my life. Please endure hardship. Thus he spoke. Then, a deity who loved that hermit knew the man's thoughts through his mind and told the hermit. Then, as soon as the hermit heard it, he disappeared from his place of ascetic practice and came before those wild men, and those wild men saw the hermit. Having seen him, they became exceedingly joyful. Having become joyful, they said, "Hermit, what do you command?" The hermit said, "Release this man and let him sit before me, and I will teach you the Dharma." Then they said, "We shall do as the hermit commands." Having said this, those wild men released the man, prostrated at the feet of the hermit, and sat before him in order to listen to the Dharma. Then, that hermit taught them such Dharma that the man and five hundred wild men went forth in the presence of that hermit. They developed the four concentrations and the five superknowledges. Monks, what do you think? At that time, the one who became the hermit, who dwelt in the conduct of a Bodhisattva, was I. At that time, the man was this Kashyapa. Those who became the five hundred wild men were these five hundred wild men. At that time, these ones, relying on that man, went forth and developed the four concentrations and the five superknowledges. Now also, relying on this Kashyapa, they have gone forth, abandoned all afflictions, and directly realized the state of an Arhat.
