Having decorated it with blue, yellow, red, and white cloths, they carried it on top. Since they were unable to lift the bier, they went to the Venerable Aniruddha and reported it. Then the Venerable Aniruddha remembered and thought, "It is precisely because I made a prayer to become like this." Having realized this, he petitioned the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, "Monks, put on your Dharma robes and go to perform the rites of offering for that monk." The Blessed One, attended by the assembly of monks, with the Sangha of monks clearing the way in front, proceeded to the house of that householder. Mahaprajapati Gautami also heard that the son of a certain householder had gone forth and passed away, and that the Blessed One intended to make offerings and show respect to him. Having learned of this, she also remembered his previous existence and, with five hundred attendants, went to the house of that householder. The householder Anathapindika, the chief attendant of the queen's retinue, Jivaka, and the ancients also heard of it. The laywoman Saga and the laywoman Uttara also heard that the son of a certain householder had gone forth and passed away, and that the Blessed One intended to make offerings and show respect to him. Having heard this, they also went there with their retinues. They prostrated at the feet of the Blessed One and said, "We will perform the stupa offering for this monk's relics. Blessed One, do not trouble yourself." Then the Blessed One, without saying anything to the householder Anathapindika, granted his permission. Then the householder Anathapindika and other lay followers carried the bier of that monk and set out for the charnel ground. Following behind them were the Blessed One and other monks, as well as the laymen and laywomen who were making offerings and showing respect. Having carried it to the charnel ground, they chopped up various fragrant woods, lit a fire, extinguished the fire with milk, collected the bones, placed them in a vase, and built a stupa for the relics in that very place.

After building a stupa, in order to make great offerings at that stupa and listen to the Dharma, they sat before the Buddha. The Blessed One taught the fourfold assembly about impermanence and then went to the monastery. Then, the monks asked the Blessed One: 'What deeds did the monk Purna commit, that as a result of those deeds, he was born into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family, but with many illnesses?' The Blessed One said: 'Monks, Purna himself did and accumulated deeds in the past. Monks, the deeds that have been done and accumulated will not mature in the external realm of earth, nor will they mature in the realm of water, fire, or wind. The deeds, both virtuous and non-virtuous, that have been done and accumulated will only mature in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases that have been taken. The deeds of sentient beings will not be lost even for hundreds of eons. When the conditions gather and the time arrives, they will ripen into their own fruit.' Monks, in the past, in this very fortunate eon, when the lifespan of beings was forty thousand years, in the royal palace of King Deva, the advisor to King Deva, the Brahmin Mesha, had two sons. One of them, seeing an old man, a sick man, and a dead man, took refuge in the forest. He went there and remembered the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, attained unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, turned the wheel of Dharma twelve times in three ways, benefited sentient beings, and became a perfectly enlightened Buddha named Destroyer of Samsara. The other one indulged in desires, was reckless, committed adultery, and killed. Then he fled to the mountains and harmed thousands of sentient beings. Then, when the perfectly enlightened Buddha Destroyer of Samsara went to the beautiful palace, when father and son met, he stayed in the beautiful place and benefited sentient beings. Then he dissuaded his younger brother from his sinful deeds, and taught him to take refuge and observe the precepts.
