and took the bases of refuge and precepts. Then, when those two took the bases of refuge and precepts, the two dragon kings could not be subdued by the garudas, and they emerged from the great ocean and dwelt at ease. Then the two garudas, Siyan and Sichung, saw the two dragon kings emerge from the great ocean and dwell at ease. Having seen them, they also tried to attack fiercely, but they could not harm them. They were repelled as if they had struck Mount Meru. The two dragons then asked the two garudas: 'Before, you two were afraid of us two and went down to dwell on the golden ground. Now, why are you two dwelling at ease, and we two cannot harm you two?' The two dragons said: 'Because we two have also taken the bases of refuge and precepts from the Fully Enlightened Buddha Kashyapa. Therefore, now you two cannot subdue us two.' The two garudas said: 'Who is this being called Buddha?' Then the two dragons extensively praised the Buddha to the two garudas. Then, as soon as they heard this, they also developed great joy towards the Fully Enlightened Buddha Kashyapa. Having developed joy, they also went to the Fully Enlightened Buddha Kashyapa, took the bases of refuge and precepts, and then they lived harmoniously together. They guarded the bases of refuge and precepts for one lifetime, and at the time of death, they made the aspiration: 'Thus, by the root of virtue of guarding the bases of refuge and precepts for one lifetime in the teachings of the Fully Enlightened Buddha Kashyapa, may we be the most excellent wherever we are born. May we please the Fully Enlightened Buddha Kashyapa, who prophesied the brahmin boy, the supreme one (the future Buddha Maitreya), and may we not displease him.' Monks, what do you think? At that time, the dragon

Those who became known as the kings of breath and great breath were none other than the great King Dhṛtarāṣṭra and the noble-born one in the central land. At that time, those who became known as the kings of the sky-soarers, Sweet Sound and Small Sound, were none other than the great King Virūḍhaka and the son of Vaiśravaṇa, who were kings of the border regions. They, in that place, for one lifetime, took refuge and protected the bases of training, and at the time of death, they made aspirations, saying: Alas! By this root of virtue, may we be primarily mentioned wherever we are born! May we be pleased by the Tathāgata, the Bhagavan, the perfectly complete Buddha Light Treasury, who was prophesied by the Brahmin boy lama, and may we not be displeased! By the ripening of that action, now, among the gods of the retinue of the Four Great Kings, they have become primarily mentioned. Monks, I have attained that which is extremely equal to the perfectly complete Buddha Light Treasury, equal in power, equal in deeds, and equal in means. These ones pleased me and did not displease me. At that time, when the Bhagavan taught the Dharma to the Four Great Kings and also prophesied the aspects of their actions, the hermit Kainya was also sitting not far away, and he heard everything. As soon as he heard it, he became delighted with the Bhagavan, and he went to where the Bhagavan was, and having gone, he bowed his head at the feet of the Bhagavan, and sat down in front of him in order to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Bhagavan, having understood his intention, predispositions, realm, knowledge, and nature, taught the Dharma that was in accordance with him. Therefore, the hermit Kainya, in the moment of realizing the truth, directly realized the fruit of once-returning. Having seen the truth, he rose from his seat, draped his upper robe over one shoulder, and bowed with his palms joined together towards where the Bhagavan was, and said this to the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, together with the community of monks, please remain under the umbrella of today, in this direction, before the time.

Having said, "Would you allow me to offer the drink I have prepared?" the Blessed One did not speak to the ascetic Kainya, thus giving his permission. Then, the ascetic Kainya, knowing that the Blessed One had given his permission by not speaking, prepared eight kinds of drinks. He brought drinks made from the juice of apples, fruits of aquatic plants, fruits of juniper, fruits of ashvattha trees, fruits of udumbara trees, fruits of parushaka trees, pomegranates, and grapes. He went to where the Blessed One was, and upon arriving, he said to the Blessed One: "Venerable one, these eight kinds of drinks are praised, well-spoken of, extolled, and favorably mentioned by the ascetics of the past. Out of compassion, I beseech the Blessed One to accept them." Then, out of compassion, the Blessed One accepted the eight kinds of drinks from the ascetic Kainya. Then, there, the Blessed One addressed the monks, saying: "Monks, among these eight kinds of drinks, whether strained with cloth or not, whether clear or not, whether turbid or not, whether good in color or not, all of these are allowed by me to be drunk by monks, nuns, male novices, and female novices at the proper time, but not at the improper time. Monks, among these eight kinds of drinks, those that are strained with cloth, clear, good in color, not turbid, and without sediment, are to be drunk at the improper time." Then, the ascetic Kainya, approaching the Blessed One, respectfully joined his palms and said to the Blessed One: "Venerable one, tomorrow, would you allow me to offer a meal at my place, together with the community of monks?" After making this request, the Blessed One did not speak to the ascetic Kainya, thus giving his permission. Then, the ascetic Kainya, knowing that the Blessed One had given his permission by not speaking, said to the Blessed One: "Venerable one, then please stay tonight in this forest where we reside." Then, ascetic, however you like.
