Thinking it was rare, those people became happy and also offered joyful offerings. At that time, in a forest in the land of Aduma, there lived a sage named Kainya, who had five hundred attendants and possessed five kinds of clairvoyance. Not far from him, in another forest, lived his sister's son, a sage named Rivo, who also had five hundred attendants. Both of these sages lived by the shore of a slowly flowing lake, and they would often go there and spend the day there. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, is the teacher of the one and only path, possessing mastery over the two kinds of knowledge and wisdom, skilled in the three unmixed mindfulnesses, fearless with the four fearlessnesses, liberated from the five realms of existence, skilled in the six sense bases, with the seven branches of enlightenment as his field of activity, meditating on the eight liberations, entering into the nine successive abidings, possessing the ten powers, and truly roaring the great lion's roar. According to the Dharma, three times during the day and three times during the night, that is, six times day and night, the Buddha observes the world with his Buddha-eye, who declines, who prospers, who is poor, who is miserable, who has harm, who is poor, miserable, and has harm, who inclines towards the lower realms, who falls into the lower realms, who has fallen into the lower realms, who I will rescue from the lower realms and place in the heavenly realms, liberation, and fruition, who I will pull out of the mire of evil deeds, who I will make the master of the seven noble riches from having none, who I will cause to generate roots of virtue from not having generated them, who I will cause to fully ripen from having already generated roots of virtue, who I will pierce with the sword of wisdom from having fully ripened roots of virtue, who I will make the world adorned by the appearance of the Buddha bear fruit, thinking thus he engages in the wisdom observation. The ocean is the abode of aquatic creatures, and the waves of time may recede, but for those who are to be tamed, the Buddha never misses the opportunity. Then, the Bhagavan

Thinking, 'If I teach the Dharma to the Four Great Kings anywhere, I will easily subdue the ascetic Keniya and the mountain there. Rather, I will teach the Dharma to the Four Great Kings on the bank of the Ganges River, and there, I will subdue the ascetic Keniya and the mountain with little effort.' The Blessed One arose with worldly thoughts: 'Alas, the Four Great Kings know my mind, thinking that the Blessed One wants to teach us the Dharma on the bank of the Ganges River, it would be good if they could realize that.' Then, the Four Great Kings understood the Blessed One's intention and sent servants, saying, 'Go to the bank of the Ganges River today, arrange the seats, scatter the ground with various flowers, sprinkle perfume, and also warn the ascetic Keniya and the mountain, protect them, and do not allow humans, non-humans, or rakshasas to harm them.' Then, the servants of the Four Great Kings responded, 'As you command,' and went to the bank of the Ganges River, arranged the seats, scattered the ground with various flowers, and sprinkled perfume. Then, the ascetic Keniya saw the servants of the Four Great Kings arranging seats on the bank of the Ganges River, scattering the ground with various flowers, and sprinkling perfume. After seeing this, the ascetic Keniya asked, 'What are you preparing?' They replied, 'The Blessed One wants to teach the Dharma to the Four Great Kings, so we are arranging the seats.' The ascetic Keniya said, 'Am I teaching the Dharma to them?' The servants of the Four Great Kings said, 'The ascetic Gautama is teaching the Dharma to them, not you.' He said, 'Then why are you following behind me?' They said, 'Because many servants will come following them, we are worried that they will harm you, so we are protecting you.' The ascetic Keniya said, 'Are you only protecting me? Or are you also protecting the ascetic Gautama?'

said. The attendants of the Four Great Kings said: "We do not protect the ascetic Gautama, for he protects the world with its gods." Then Keniya thought: "Since even the gods are diligent in their work to worship him, the ascetic Gautama must be one with great magical powers and strength." Then the Blessed One disappeared from the country of Aduma and went to the bank of the slowly flowing river and sat on the prepared seat. Then the Great King Dhritarashtra, attended by thousands of Gandharvas, filled vessels with heavenly lotuses, lotuses, water lilies, and white lotuses, went to where the Blessed One was, and after arriving, bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One. He scattered heavenly lotuses, lotuses, water lilies, and white lotuses on the Blessed One, and then leaned on the east side, facing the Blessed One, and sat facing the west. Then the Great King Virudhaka, attended by thousands of Kumbhandas, filled vessels with jewels, went to where the Blessed One was, and after arriving, scattered jewels on the Blessed One, bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, and then leaned on the south side, facing the Blessed One, and sat facing the north. Then the Great King Virupaksha, attended by thousands of Nagas, filled vessels with pearls, went to where the Blessed One was, and after arriving, scattered pearls on the Blessed One, bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, and then leaned on the west side, facing the Blessed One, and sat facing the east. Then the Great King Vaishravana, attended by thousands of Yakshas, filled vessels with gold and silver, went to where the Blessed One was, and after arriving, scattered gold and silver on the Blessed One, bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, and then leaned on the north side, facing the Blessed One, and sat facing the south. Among them, two are border people, and two are central people.
