The many ordinary people, driven by the roots of virtue from the past, were amazed and wondered where these smells came from. Thousands of people wanted to watch the spectacle. They rushed to the dung heap where the smell was coming from, and those ordinary people saw such worms writhing and dwelling in that dung heap. Having seen this, they thought, "What is the reason that such beings are experiencing such suffering?" Then the Blessed One thought, "Have all those who are to be tamed by me in Nerañjana gathered now?" Thinking this, in the morning, having put on his lower garment and Dharma robes, and carrying his alms bowl, attended by a retinue of monks, he went to Nerañjana and arrived at that dung heap. Those many ordinary people saw the Buddha, the Blessed One, from afar. Having seen him, those who did not have faith said, "It is said that the ascetic Gautama is free from the desire to watch spectacles, but he has also succumbed to the spectacle and come here." Those who had faith said, "The Blessed One must have come here because he wants to teach some rare and wonderful Dharma based on this worm." So they prepared a seat for the Blessed One and said to him, "Blessed One, it is good that you have come! Please be seated on the prepared seat." Having said this, the Blessed One sat on the prepared seat. Then the Blessed One thought, "How can I make this worm remember its past lives, speak in human language, and be able to converse with the Blessed One? I shall enter into such a samadhi." Thinking this, the Blessed One, in order to make that worm remember its past lives, speak in human language, and be able to converse with the Blessed One, entered into such a samadhi. There, the Blessed One said to that worm, "Good-face, are you the Tripitaka?" It replied, "Blessed One, I am the Tripitaka." "Good-face, are you the Tripitaka?" "Sugata, I am the

It is the third container. The Blessed One taught: Will the ripening of the karmic results of the misdeeds of body, speech, and mind be experienced? Blessed One, the ripening of the results of the misdeeds of body, speech, and mind is the experience of unpleasantness. Sugata, there is the experience of unpleasantness. The Blessed One taught: Who is your unwholesome friend? He replied: It is my mind. Then, as soon as they heard this, many ordinary people were amazed, thinking: Who is this being who can remember past lives, speak human language, and also knows how to converse with the Blessed One? The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, are difficult to approach, and they could not muster the courage to ask the Blessed One, so they went to the Venerable Ananda and asked: Venerable, who is this being who can remember past lives, speak human language, and also knows how to converse with the Blessed One? The Venerable Ananda said: Ask the Blessed One. They said: The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, are difficult to approach, and we cannot muster the courage to ask. The Venerable Ananda said: Even I find it difficult to approach the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, but for your sake, I will ask. Then, the Venerable Ananda draped his upper robe over one shoulder, and with his palms joined together, bowed towards the direction where the Blessed One was, and said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, this venerable being, who can remember past lives, can also speak human language, and can also ask questions of the Blessed One, and is also experiencing such harmful suffering, who is this? Then, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Ananda: Ananda, this being is a doer of sinful deeds, he has done many sinful deeds. Ananda, in the past, beyond the realm of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, the fully and perfectly enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Sugata, the Knower of the World, the Guide of those who can be tamed, the unsurpassed, the god and human

The teacher of all, the Buddha, the Bhagavan named All-Supreme, appeared in the world. At that time, a householder gained faith in the teachings of the perfectly complete Buddha, All-Supreme, and having taken refuge and the bases of training, he thought, 'I will abandon living at home and go forth into the teachings of the perfectly complete Buddha, All-Supreme.' Having thought this, he abandoned his household and went forth into the teachings of the perfectly complete Buddha, All-Supreme. Having gone forth there, he studied the three baskets (Tripitaka), possessed of knowledge and the fearlessness of liberation, a speaker of Dharma. He came to acquire food, drink, bedding, seats, medicine for the sick, and medicinal goods, and then he thought, 'I will surely benefit those who practice the pure life with me through what I have acquired and what is to be acquired through respect.' Then, he urged patrons and donors, and engaged in serving the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. At that time, on the mountain called Nokri, seventy-seven thousand monks, both learners and non-learners, wished to take a vow to dwell in the summer retreat. They thought, 'We will appoint a caretaker and then take the vow to dwell in the summer retreat.' Thinking, 'Who is able to serve our Sangha?' They thought, 'This master of the three baskets is known to all, possessed of great merit, and able to acquire food, drink, bedding, seats, medicine for the sick, and medicinal goods. We should please him and have him alone take care of us, and then we will take the vow to dwell in the summer retreat.' Then they went to him and said, 'Venerable one, we seventy-seven thousand monks wish to take a vow to dwell in the summer retreat on Nokri Mountain. If you are able to care for the Sangha according to the Dharma, please rejoice, and relying on you, we will take the vow to dwell in the summer retreat.' The master of the three baskets said, 'Do not worry, I will provide all your necessities.' Then, as soon as they heard that, those monks went to that mountain and, relying solely on that master of the three baskets, took the vow to dwell in the summer retreat. Then, the master of the three baskets
