A bear, also frightened by the lion, had already climbed that tree and was staying there. Then, when the man saw this, he felt great fear, thinking: Although I have escaped from the fear of the lion, this fellow will cause me suffering. That bear was a Bodhisattva of the Good Aeon. Bodhisattvas, even if their bodies fall into wrongdoing, their minds will not fall into wrongdoing. When the Bodhisattva saw that the man was terrified, realizing this, out of compassion for him, he spoke in human language, instructing him: Friend, do not be afraid! You do not need to fear me. The Bodhisattva extended his hand, pulled the man up, and protected him with his own body. The Bodhisattva said to him: You should know that this lion is killing, attacking, and hostile to us. You must also guard me when I sleep, and I will guard you when you sleep. In this way, we two will protect each other, and we will live in peace. Then the man also said: Okay, let's do that. That man lay down, using the Bodhisattva's lap as a pillow. Then, after the man heard that verse, he felt great remorse and said, what should I do? When it was sleeping, it served me well and saved my life, I should not have abandoned it even for a handful of water. Then he wandered around like a madman, saying: Alas, in these worlds, non-dharma is very frightening. Sinful people among them also harm the virtuous. He said that. Then the man's brothers took him to a doctor and asked what was going on. The doctor said that it was not a ghost that disturbed his mind, and that he could not cure him. Then, not far from that hermitage village, lived a sage with clairvoyance, who had great magical powers and strength. The man's brothers took him to that sage and asked him what power had made him mad. The sage told his brothers about it in detail, saying that it was because he had abandoned a handful of water that he had gone mad. Then, in order to restore the man's mind to normal, the sage taught him such Dharma. At that time, the sage said to the man: Alas, you abandoned a handful of water and did such a thing to such a being, which was not good. After saying that, the sage said a verse to the man: Whether sitting or lying down, whether standing or walking, whatever the situation, the virtuous will not obtain happiness. As it fell off the cliff, it spoke words of compassion. Therefore, you evil one will be burned, burning like the forest of Kadava. Experience the pain of non-pleasure.
