Then, he was merely plotting ways to kill the Blessed One. Then, the monks sensed this and reported to the Blessed One: "Venerable One, the Blessed One, please see how Devadatta is striving to kill the Blessed One, and is merely plotting ways to kill him. Venerable One, Devadatta is ungrateful, does not repay kindness, and squanders kindness!" The Blessed One said: "It is not only now, but also in the past, he was ungrateful, did not repay kindness, and squandered kindness. Listen to this!" Monks, in the past, in a certain remote village, there lived a poor man who made a living by selling grass and wood. One day, he went to the mountains to chop wood. While he was in the mountains, it snowed, and he was threatened by the wind and afflicted by bad weather, so he went into a large cave. At that time, the Bodhisattva was born as a bear. Bodhisattvas, even if they fall in body, do not fall in mind. He was great-minded, of a loving nature, full of compassion, kind to sentient beings, and possessed of a non-harming mind. He did not want to harm anyone, and lived on roots and fruits. He accumulated roots and fruits in that cave, and when threatened by the wind, he entered the cave and lived there. The man who went into the cave saw the bear, and the moment he saw it, he felt great fear: "I am surely going to die at the hands of this fellow! I surely cannot escape from this fellow!" Then, the Bodhisattva saw him and thought: "This man is also threatened by the wind and is very afraid." So, out of compassion for him, he spoke in human language: "Friend, do not be afraid! You do not need to be afraid of me!" Then, the Bodhisattva protected the man with his own body and gave him roots and fruits. Thus, for seven days, the bear protected the man with his own body and nourished him with roots and fruits. After seven days, when the bad weather had cleared, the Bodhisattva admonished him:

Hey man, go home, I have many enemies, they will come to kill me for meat, don't tell anyone that I am here, so he said. Then, the Bodhisattva let the man go. Then that man carried the wood and went to the side of the mountain village. From that mountain village, two hunters were also preparing to go to chase the escaped wild animals. The two of them saw the man carrying wood and coming, and they thought, this man will come back from this mountain village after seven days, where will this person eat what during these seven days? So the two of them asked the man. The man also told them the story in detail. Then as soon as they heard that, the two of them said to the man: Hey man, come here and tell us where the bear is, and we two will kill the bear and give you a share of the bear meat. Then the man thought, although that bear has been protecting me for seven days, it is of no use to me, and there is no food in my house either, if I tell them, my family can eat for many days. So he said to the two men: Hey you two, I will tell you where the bear is. After saying that, he told the two hunters that the bear was in the cave. The two of them shot the bear with a poisoned arrow, and the Bodhisattva was struck by a fatal illness. When he was about to die, he said this verse: Living in the dense mountain valley, what have I stolen from whom? Eating grass and roots, fruits, not harming anyone, the time of death has come, now I have nothing to do. The happiness and suffering of sentient beings depend on karma. Then the two men killed the bear, skinned it, divided the meat into three parts, and said to the man: Hey man, take your share. Then as soon as he heard that, the man stretched out his hands and said he would take it, and his hands fell to the ground. Then as soon as the two hunters saw this scene, they said to the man: Hey, what's going on? The man said: This bear protected me with its own body for seven days when there was wind and bad weather, and also gave me roots and fruits.

Because of who raised me, I did bad things to him, so this result came to me. Then, as soon as they heard these words, the two hunters became very unhappy. They thought unhappily: This is not a bad sentient being. We two cannot eat such meat that has been raised with love. These are worthy of offering. At that time, the world was adorned by the appearance of the Buddha. The two of them took the meat and went to the temple. After going to the temple, they also offered it to the Sangha. Then, the meat was seen by an Arhat, who thought: This meat was raised with love by the Bodhisattva Maitreya of the Good Kalpa. Then he said to the monks: Venerable ones, this meat was raised with love by the Bodhisattva Maitreya of the Good Kalpa. It is worthy of offering, so we should offer it. After saying this, he said in verse: This deer has great merit, the Bodhisattva bears a heavy burden, has great compassion, and is a place of offering in the three realms. After saying these words, that Arhat, those monks, and the two hunters burned the meat, built a stupa for the relics, made great offerings, and left. Monks, what do you think? At that time, the one who became a bear and abided in the conduct of a Bodhisattva was me. At that time, the one who became a human was Devadatta. At that time, he was also ungrateful, unappreciative, and one who betrayed kindness. The story of a bear is the same as the previous introduction. World Honored One, the monks reported: Venerable Devadatta is ungrateful, unappreciative, and one who betrays kindness. The World Honored One said: Not only now, but also in the past, listen to how he was ungrateful, unappreciative, and one who betrayed kindness. Monks, in the past, there lived a poor man in a remote village who made a living by selling grass and wood.
