He spoke to the five monks, saying: Monks, do not utter mere words of name, lineage, and "endowed with life" when referring to the Thus-Gone One. You will be harmed, disadvantaged, and suffer for a long time. Why is that? Monks, if someone utters mere words of name, lineage, and "endowed with life" when referring to the Thus-Gone One, the Destroyer, the Perfectly and Fully Awakened Buddha, then it will cause them harm, disadvantage, and suffering for a long time. They said: Gautama, your former conduct, practice, and asceticism did not surpass human dharma, nor did you attain the ultimate noble distinction of wisdom, vision, or blissful touch. Now you are negligent, becoming very scattered, and have fallen from abandoning life. Now you eat a lot of food, eating rice and tsampa, nourishing your body with ghee and sesame oil, and bathing your body with warm water, how can you possibly attain liberation? Then, the Blessed One spoke to the five monks, saying: Monks, have you seen the Thus-Gone One's complexion change from before to now, and the senses become different? They replied: Yes, Gautama, we have seen it. The Blessed One said: Monks, these two extremes are not to be cultivated, not to be approached, not to be fully cultivated by those who have gone forth. Which two? One is indulging in the pleasures of desires, which is base, vulgar, the dharma of ordinary people; the other is indulging in self-mortification, which is painful, not noble, and harmful. By not indulging in these two extremes, there is a Middle Way that gives rise to the eye, gives rise to knowledge, and leads to peace, bringing about direct knowledge, direct enlightenment, and Nirvana. What is the Middle Way? It is the Noble Eightfold Path, namely right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right

Samadhi. Then, the Blessed One instructed the group of five monks in this way, and they practiced according to this instruction. In the morning, when the Blessed One taught the two monks of the group of five, three monks went into the town for alms. Whatever the three brought back was used to sustain all six. In the afternoon, when the Blessed One taught the three monks of the group of five, two monks went into the town for alms. Whatever the two brought back was used to sustain the group of five. The Blessed One always ate at the proper time. Then, the Blessed One said to the group of five monks: Monks, from properly attending to the dharmas I had not heard before, the eye arose in me with the thought: This is the noble truth of suffering! Wisdom, knowledge, and understanding arose. Monks, from properly attending to the dharmas I had not heard before, the eye arose in me with the thought: This is the origin of suffering! This is the cessation of suffering! This is the noble truth of the path that leads to the cessation of suffering! Wisdom, knowledge, and understanding arose. Monks, from properly attending to the dharmas I had not heard before, the eye arose in me with the thought: This noble truth of suffering should be fully known through direct knowledge! Wisdom, knowledge, and understanding arose. Monks, from properly attending to the dharmas I had not heard before, the eye arose in me with the thought: This noble truth of the origin of suffering should be abandoned through direct knowledge! Wisdom, knowledge, and understanding arose. Monks, from properly attending to the dharmas I had not heard before, the eye arose in me with the thought: This noble truth of the cessation of suffering should be directly realized through direct knowledge! The eye arose, wisdom, knowledge, and understanding arose. Monks, from properly attending to the dharmas I had not heard before, the eye arose in me with the thought: This noble truth of the path that leads to the cessation of suffering should be cultivated through direct knowledge!
