Ra. At that time, your situation will be that I and others will become Shravakas! Thus he said. Then, when the Perfectly Enlightened Dipamkara Buddha prophesied to the Brahmin boy Sumati, King Dipamkara took his hair, and the son of King Dhanya said: Please give me these hairs. Then, King Dipamkara gave those hairs to him, and after he took them, he counted them, and there were eighty thousand hairs. Then, the ministers of that king requested: Divine one, please grant each of us a single hair. However, we wish to build stupas for them. Then, that king gave each of those ministers a single hair, and those ministers went to their respective countries and built stupas. When the Brahmin boy Sumati was prophesied to attain unsurpassed and perfect enlightenment, King Dipamkara, the son of King Dhanya, and many people from the city and the countryside, looking to the merits of the future, offered all their possessions. Then, Sumati said to the Brahmin boy Mati: When I am prophesied to attain unsurpassed enlightenment, what will you aspire to? He said: I am not suitable. The Brahmin boy Sumati said: What did you do that made you unsuitable? He said: When the feet of the Perfectly Enlightened Dipamkara Buddha stepped on your hair, I became angry and said: The Perfectly Enlightened Dipamkara Buddha stepped on the hair of the Brahmin with his feet as if treating livestock. Then, Sumati said to him: Come, let us go forth in the presence of the Buddha Bhagavan. Then, Sumati and Mati both went forth in the teachings of the Perfectly Enlightened Dipamkara Buddha. After Sumati went forth, he studied the three pitakas and gathered a retinue according to the Dharma. Then, the Brahmin boy Sumati died, passed away from time, and was born in the heavenly realm of Tushita. The Brahmin boy Mati died, passed away from time, and was born in the hell of sentient beings.

O monks, what do you think? At that time, the Brahmin boy Good Intelligence, who was abiding in the conduct of a Bodhisattva, that was myself. There, I made offerings to the Buddha Dipamkara with blue lotuses, and due to the ripening of that karma, I experienced great happiness in samsara. That root of virtue became the cause, condition, and accumulation for my unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and even now, due to the ripening of that karma, five hundred companions have made such offerings. The Hundred Karmas, Volume Eight, entitled "Fearless": The Blessed One was staying in Naming, and then proceeded to Rajagriha (Rajgir, located in Bihar). He went to a solitary place, and having rested there for a moment, refreshed himself in the shade of a tree, and then continued on. That path was full of great fear of lions. The venerable Ananda saw that the road had split into two, and then said to the Blessed One: Venerable, this path has split into two, one path is straight but full of fear, and the other path is crooked but without fear. Venerable, which path do you intend to take? The Blessed One replied: Ananda, where the Tathagatas, Arhats, perfectly and completely enlightened Buddhas reside, there is no fear, dread, or anxiety, so take the straight path. Two village children were playing not far from the Blessed One, one holding a small bell, and the other holding a bow and arrow. Then, those two children saw from afar the Buddha, the Blessed One, whose body was adorned and beautified with the thirty-two major marks of a great being. Having seen him, they felt joy. Having felt joy, they went to where the Blessed One was, and having gone, they bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One, and then said to the Blessed One: Venerable, there is fear of lions on this path, but, since the Blessed One is going this way, we two are willing to escort the Blessed One.

The Blessed One said, 'Boys, what will you do if you encounter the fear of a lion?' One of them replied, 'Venerable one, I will be frightened by the sound of musical instruments.' The other replied, 'I will be frightened by the sound of bows and arrows.' After answering in this way, the two boys went before the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One thought, 'These two have already planted roots of virtue.' Thinking this, the Blessed One said, 'Boys, it is enough that you two have generated joy; go back!' Then the two boys returned. The Blessed One smiled, and this is the nature of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, when they smile. At that time, blue, yellow, red, and white rays of light emanated from his face, some going downwards and some going upwards. Those that went downwards went to the hells of sentient beings, namely, the Reviving Hell, the Black Line Hell, the Aggregation Hell, the Crying Hell, the Great Crying Hell, the Hot Hell, the Very Hot Hell, the Uninterrupted Hell, the Blister Hell, the Bursting Blister Hell, the Clenching Teeth Hell, the 'Kyi Hud' Hell, the 'A Chu' Hell, the Hell of Splitting Like an Utpala Lotus, the Hell of Splitting Like a Lotus, and the Great Hell of Splitting Like a Lotus. In those hot hells, the sentient beings felt cool, and in the cold hells, the sentient beings felt warm. Thus, the particular sufferings of those sentient beings were pacified. Then they thought, 'Have we died and transmigrated from here, or have we been born elsewhere?' Then, in order to generate faith in them, the Blessed One manifested emanations. Seeing the emanations, they thought, 'We have not died and transmigrated from here, nor have we been born elsewhere. However, by the power of this unprecedented sentient being's appearance, our particular sufferings have been pacified.' Then, they developed great joy towards the emanations. Therefore, the karma of experiencing hellish suffering was exhausted खत्म (藏文,梵文天城体,katham,完结), and they took rebirth among gods and humans, in places where they could become vessels of truth.
