Those abiding in diligence saw that the entire garden of Prince Jeta was pervaded by great light, and thought: Is it Brahma, the lord of the Sahā world, or Indra, the lord of the gods, or the Four Great Kings who have come to behold the Bhagavan? Then they went to where the Bhagavan was, and upon arriving, they bowed to the Bhagavan's feet with their heads, and said to the Bhagavan: Venerable one, we many monks here, not sleeping at night and dawn, abiding in diligence, have seen that the entire garden of Prince Jeta is pervaded by great light, venerable one, what is the reason? Is it Brahma, the lord of the Sahā world, or Indra, the lord of the gods, or the Four Great Kings who have come to behold the Bhagavan? Monks, it is not Brahma, the lord of the Sahā world, nor Indra, the lord of the gods, nor the Four Great Kings who have come to behold me. But the cowherd girl who offered me with kusha flowers, and bowed to my feet with her head, and having heard the Dharma from me, departed, did you see her? Bhagavan, we saw her. Not long after she left, she died with a joyful mind, and after passing away, she was born in the heavenly realm, and having become a goddess, she came to me, and I taught her the Dharma, and having heard the Dharma from me, she saw the truth, and having seen the truth, she returned to her own abode. Venerable one, what karma did that cowherd girl do, that by that karma she was born into a poor cowherd caste? What karma did she do that after dying from here, she was born in the heavenly realm? By what karma did she please the Bhagavan, and not displease the Bhagavan? The Bhagavan said: Monks, there is a portion of past karma, and there is also a portion of karma that is happening now. What past karma did she do? The Bhagavan said: Having gone forth in the teachings of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Kāśyapa, and having become a nun, she became a quarrelsome, foul-mouthed, and angry person, and spoke many words such as "cowherd girl" to many nuns. There, she practiced celibacy for a lifetime, and at the time of death, she felt regret and made a prayer: Like this...

They, with perfect and complete Enlightenment, practiced celibacy for one lifetime in the teachings of the Buddha Dipamkara, but did not obtain any accumulation of merit. May I please the Buddha, the Bhagavan, who was prophesied by the Perfectly and Completely Enlightened Buddha Dipamkara as the Brahmin boy! May I not displease him! May the result of the karma of speaking harsh words to the nuns not ripen for me. Monks, what do you think? The one who became a nun at that time was the same cowherd girl. She practiced celibacy there for one lifetime and made a prayer at the time of death: May I please the Buddha, the Bhagavan, who was prophesied by the Perfectly and Completely Enlightened Buddha Dipamkara as the Brahmin boy! May I not displease him! Therefore, monks, I have attained the same, the same power, the same deeds, and the same means as the Perfectly and Completely Enlightened Buddha Dipamkara, and this one has pleased me and has not displeased me. This is past karma. What is the present karma? The one who became a cowherd girl made offerings to me with Koshata flowers and was delighted with me, and therefore was born in the heavenly realm. Monks, this is the present karma. Venerable ones, what karma did these cowherds do that, as a result of that karma, they were born into a poor cowherd caste? What karma did they do that they pleased the Bhagavan and did not displease the Bhagavan, and having renounced in the Bhagavan's teachings, abandoned all defilements and directly realized the state of an Arhat? The Bhagavan said: They all renounced in the teachings of the Perfectly and Completely Enlightened Buddha Dipamkara, becoming quarrelsome and evil-mouthed monks. There, they became angry and spoke the word "cowherd" to many monks. There, they practiced celibacy for one lifetime and made a prayer at the time of death: The Perfectly and Completely Enlightened Buddha Dipamkara prophesied the Brahmin boy

May that Bhagavan Buddha, whoever he may be, please us! May he not displease us! May we, having renounced in that very teaching, abandon all defilements and realize the state of Arhat! We have said the word "cowherd" to many monks, may the fruit of that action not ripen upon us. Monks, what do you think? Those five hundred monks who renounced in the teachings of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light Treasury at that time were these five hundred monks who renounced from being cowherds. Having renounced there, they made a prayer at the time of death, saying: May the Bhagavan Buddha who was prophesied by the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light Treasury as the Brahmin boy please us! May he not displease us! May we, having renounced in that very teaching, abandon all defilements and realize the state of Arhat! Therefore, monks, I have attained a state that is very similar to the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light Treasury, with the same power, the same deeds, and the same skillful means. These people have pleased me, have not displeased me, and having renounced in my own teaching, have abandoned all defilements and realized the state of Arhat. There, because they were angry, they spoke the word "cowherd" to many monks and did not give alms, therefore, the poor cowherd lived by eating the gardens of others. The story is called "Friends." Originating from: Residing in Shravasti. At that time, about five hundred friends residing in Shravasti, in order to enjoy the flowers that bloomed in each season, went to the garden to play music, frolic, and enjoy themselves to the fullest. Later, at some point, the Utpala flowers, lotuses, water lilies, and white lotuses bloomed. In order to enjoy these flowers, they adorned themselves with all sorts of decorations and made garlands with Utpala flowers, lotuses, water lilies, and white lotuses.
