and sent a message saying, "We shall meet." Then Brahma-given thought, "Until discord is created, I cannot kill him, so I think I should create discord with him." Then King Brahma-given created discord with King Power-great-faction again, and prepared the four divisions of the army. He went to the country of Videha and surrounded the city with the four divisions of the army. He stayed there, causing great anxiety to many people. Then the queen of Power-great-faction sent a message saying, "Whatever reason you have come here, it is all for my sake, so why kill so many people? Now, enter the city disguised as an ordinary person and meet me." As soon as he heard this, the King of Kashi, Brahma-given, came to the royal palace as she had instructed. As soon as he arrived, the queen of Power-great-faction seized him and told the king, "The god Brahma-given has done what pleases the gods." Then King Power-great-faction gathered the princes, ministers, merchants, wealthy people, and captains, and kicked the head of the King of Kashi, Brahma-given, and said, "Remember, from now on, do not become a philanderer with another's wife." Then the queen said to King Power-great-faction, "O god, is it not more effective to humiliate him than to kill him? Why kill him further now, release him." So he let him go alive. Monks, what do you think? At that time, the one who became King Power-great-faction of the country of Videha, who was abiding in the practice of enlightenment, was myself. At that time, the one who became the queen was this Earth-nourishing-mother. At that time, the one who became the King of Kashi, called Brahma-given, was this Devadatta, and at that time also he was kicked by me in front of many people and was greatly humiliated. The story called "Hair Woman" is about when the Bodhisattva was staying in the Tushita heaven, in the country of...

In the place of Yer Skya, King Lion Jaw reigned as king. He and his queen played together, enjoying themselves with joy and delight, and successively gave birth to four sons and four daughters, namely Pure Rice, White Rice, Grain Rice, Ambrosia Rice, and Pure Mother, White Mother, Grain Mother, Ambrosia Mother. At that time, in the country of Kapilavastu, King Shakya Good Awake resided. He and his queen played together, enjoying themselves with joy and delight, and gave birth to two daughters. One was named Illusion Girl, and the other was named Great Illusion Girl. Thereafter, the two of them were raised and nurtured with milk, yogurt, butter, ghee, and the essence of butter, growing vigorously like lotuses in the sea. Thereafter, the diviners examined the two of them and prophesied: "From the Illusion Girl, a son with perfect marks will be born, and from the Great Illusion Girl, a Chakravartin king will be born." The hair of the two of them grew as luxuriantly as sesame oil dripping into water. Thereafter, King Lion Jaw heard of this and sent a messenger to King Good Awake, saying: "Please give your two daughters to be the wives of my son. Although we Shakyas have an internal rule against taking two sisters as wives, if I can persuade the Shakyas, I will later take both of them." After Lion Jaw pleaded with the Shakyas, he treated the two daughters as if they were householders and took them as the queens of King Pure Rice. There, King Good Awake gave a woman named Hair-bun Girl to the two of them as a maidservant. Thereafter, when the Bodhisattva was born, seven days after his birth, Great Illusion Girl died, and after her death, she was reborn in the heaven of the Thirty-Three. Hair-bun Girl, separated from her, grabbed the hair of Great Illusion Girl, grieving intensely, rolling around crying, wailing and beating her chest, and no one could alleviate her sorrow. Thereafter, when the Bodhisattva grew up, he saw an old man, a sick person, and a dead person.

Having settled in the forest from the earth, having practiced austerities for six years, having attained the unsurpassed wisdom, finally performing the meaning of taming, he went to the place of the Shakyas. After arriving there, he caused the Shakyas to renounce. The great mother of beings, Mahā-Gautamī, also renounced. The woman with the hair also renounced, and she also abandoned all defilements and directly realized the state of an Arhat. The Blessed One declared her to be the best of those who strive diligently. Then, the monks asked the Blessed One: "What deeds did the venerable Hair-Woman do, that as a result of those deeds, she was born into the Shakya clan, which is rich, wealthy, and enjoys great prosperity? What deeds did she do that she commands other female servants?" The Blessed One replied: "It is due to the power of aspiration. Where did she make the aspiration?" Monks, in the past, in a bygone era, ninety-one kalpas ago, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Sugata, Knower of the World, Tamer of Beings, Unsurpassed One, Teacher of Gods and Humans, Buddha, Blessed One, named Vipashyin appeared in the world. After he had manifestly awakened to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, he went to the city of relatives, where two sisters offered him food. There, one of them made the aspiration: "May I give birth to such a precious son, may he be pleased, and may he not be displeased." The other daughter made the aspiration: "Wherever I am born, may I be your sister, may I be able to nourish such a precious son." The daughter of the two sisters who worked as a hairdresser was also there. That daughter also heard the aspirations made by the two of them. Immediately after hearing them, she also paid homage to the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha Vipashyin and made the aspiration: "Alas, may I also, through this root of virtue, wherever these two are born, may I become the
