Venerable ones, may those who seek solitude, the listeners and the kings of discipline, strengthen the supreme teachings of the Lion of the Able One, and dispel the doubts that arise in the minds of the virtuous. The protectors, the perfectly enlightened Buddhas, who are as steadfast as the ocean and the king of mountains, do not usually show a smile easily. For what reason, O Hero, do you show a smile? Please tell us, the multitude is eager to listen. Possessing a voice like the roar of a dragon, having a gaze like that of a lion, offering to the supreme among humans, please prophesy what the result will be. Venerable one, if the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Enlightened Buddhas do not show a smile without a cause or condition, then, venerable one, what is the cause and condition for showing a smile? The Blessed One said: Kungawo (Ānanda), it is indeed so, it is indeed so. Kungawo (Ānanda), the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Enlightened Buddhas do not show a smile without a cause or condition. Kungawo (Ānanda), did you see that Brahmin offering a chariot to the Tathagata? Venerable one, I saw it. Kungawo (Ānanda), this Brahmin, by this root of virtue, will not fall into evil realms for thirteen kalpas. For thirteen kalpas, he will wander in samsara among gods and humans, obtain a final life and a final body, obtain a human body and renounce. He will realize the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment without a teacher or instructions, realize the Pratyekabuddha enlightenment, and become known as the Pratyekabuddha Chariot Giver. This is the Dharma of his giving. The story of Śyāma is as follows: The Buddha was residing in Jeta Grove in Shravasti when a sentient being was born in hell, with a huge body and blind eyes. His body was festering and oozing pus due to karma. From the crown of his head to the soles of his feet, it was infested with worms, and he could not bear the pain, so he ran around. If he walked on the plain, lions, tigers, leopards, bears, and other iron-toothed animals would immediately appear and tear his flesh.

If he goes into the sky above, then from there will arise crows, vultures, and birds with claws and iron beaks, and they too will cut and eat his flesh. If he goes into a dense forest, then from there will arise a grove of Salmali trees, and there swords, short spears, long arrows, one-pointed vajras, and broad-headed spears will be blown by the wind and fall upon him. If he wants to go into a wall crevice, a mountain cave, or a bird's nest, then from there will arise beings born from karma, holding swords, short spears, long arrows, one-pointed vajras, and broad-headed spears, and they will strike his body, and they will cut and chop his entire body into pieces. Therefore, he experiences intense, unbearable, hot, and unpleasant feelings, and utters cries of distress and weeps. To cause those who lack the seven noble riches to enter into the dominion of the seven noble riches. To cause those who have not generated roots of virtue to generate them. To cause those who have already generated roots of virtue to fully ripen. To cause those who have already fully ripened roots of virtue to be pierced by the sword of wisdom. For whom does the wisdom vision arise, thinking, "May the world adorned by the appearance of the Buddha be with fruit"? The ocean is the abode of aquatic creatures, and the waves of time may cease, but for the sons to be tamed, the Buddha's time never passes. Then the Blessed One thought, "The time has come to tame the many ordinary people in Shravasti." The Blessed One thought, "How should they be tamed? By rebuke? Or by praise? Or by generating weariness?" The Blessed One saw that they would be tamed by generating weariness. For the sake of generating weariness in them, the Blessed One, by means of miraculous power, gathered those sentient beings and placed them on the bank of the Ganges River. There, they ran around because they could not bear the pain of illness. If they walked on the plain, then lions, tigers, leopards, bears, and other creatures with iron teeth would appear, and they would tear and eat their flesh. If they plunged into the water, then crocodiles, makaras, and other creatures with iron teeth would appear, and they too would tear and eat their flesh. If they went into the sky above, then crows, vultures, hawks, and other birds with iron beaks would appear, and they too would tear and eat their flesh. If they went into the dense forest, then a grove of silk-cotton trees would appear, and swords, short spears, arrows, single-pointed vajras, and broad-bladed spears would be blown by the wind and fall upon them. If they wanted to go into cracks in walls, caves in mountains, or bird nests, then people born from karma would appear, holding swords, short spears,
