They thought, 'Alas, have we died and transmigrated from here? Or have we been born elsewhere?'. Then, in order to generate faith in them, the Blessed One manifested emanations. Having seen the emanations, they thought, 'Alas, we have neither died and transmigrated from here, nor have we been born elsewhere, however, by the power of this unprecedented sentient being's appearance, our various sufferings have been eliminated.'. Then, they developed great joy in the emanations, and thus, the karma of sentient beings who were about to experience the suffering of hell was exhausted, and they would take rebirth in places among gods and humans where they would be fit vessels for the truth. Those who go upwards are the retinues of the Four Great Kings, the Thirty-three, the Strifeless, the Joyful, the Enjoying Emanations, the Controlling Others' Emanations, the retinues of Brahma, the Attendants of Brahma, the Great Brahma, the Minor Light, the Immeasurable Light, the Clear Light, the Minor Virtue, the Immeasurable Virtue, the Universal Virtue, the Cloudless, the Merit-born, the Great Fruit, the Non-afflicted, the Non-hot, the Manifest, the Extremely Visible, and having gone to the gods of Akanishta, they proclaim the sound of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness. They also utter two verses: 'Be sure to strive for renunciation, be sure to engage in the Buddha's teachings. Like an elephant destroying a hut of reeds, destroy the army of the Lord of Death.'. 'Whoever in this Dharma-vinaya, acts with diligence, having completely abandoned the cycle of rebirth, will bring suffering to an end.'. Thus they proclaim. Then, those rays of light circled the three thousand great thousand worlds, following after the Blessed One. If the Blessed One wished to prophesy past actions, they would not appear on the hem of the Blessed One's robe. If he wished to prophesy future actions, they would not appear in front. Sentient bein

If it is desired to prophesy rebirth as a hell being, then (the light) will not appear on the soles of the feet. If it is desired to prophesy rebirth as an animal, then (the light) will not appear on the heels of the feet. If it is desired to prophesy rebirth as a hungry ghost, then (the light) will not appear on the big toes of the feet. If it is desired to prophesy rebirth as a human, then (the light) will not appear on the two knees. If it is desired to prophesy rebirth as a wheel-turning king with power, then (the light) will not appear on the palm of the left hand. If it is desired to prophesy rebirth as a wheel-turning king, then (the light) will not appear on the palm of the right hand. If it is desired to prophesy rebirth as a god, then (the light) will not appear on the navel. If it is desired to prophesy the enlightenment of a Hearer, then (the light) will not appear on the face. If it is desired to prophesy the enlightenment of a Solitary Buddha, then (the light) will not appear on the hair-whorl between the eyebrows. If it is desired to prophesy unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, then (the light) will not appear on the crown of the head. Then, those rays of light circumambulated the Blessed One three times, and then disappeared into the hair-whorl between the eyebrows of the Blessed One. Then, the venerable Ananda, with his palms joined, asked the Blessed One: "Various kinds of light, interwoven with a thousand colors, many have emerged from the door of your mouth. They illuminate all directions, just as the rising sun does." Again, he requested in verse: "The Buddha, free from clamor, not delighting in satiety, abandoning distractions, has become the supreme source for beings. The victorious conquerors do not show a smile like the root of a lotus or the color of a conch shell without cause or condition. O Venerable One, who knows the opportune time with unwavering wisdom, we who are monks, kings, listeners, and seekers of doubt, beseech you to dispel the doubts that have arisen in the minds of the virtuous with the steadfast and excellent words of the Lion of the Shakyas. The Protectors, the Perfect Buddhas, steadfast like the ocean and the king of mountains, do not usually show a smile. For what reason does the Hero show a smile? Most people desire to hear this from you." "Possessing a voice like the sound of a dragon, having a gaze like that of a lion, we pay homage to the supreme among humans."
