Beyond that, no one could be found who was more skilled in expounding the scriptures. The mother thought, "I should give this daughter to him." So, according to the customs of householders, she gave her daughter to him and also appointed him as a great wealthy man. They played together and enjoyed happiness and delight. Later, the daughter became pregnant, and after nine or ten months, she gave birth to a boy who was handsome, beautiful, and pleasing to behold. A grand birth celebration was held, and people discussed what name to give the boy. Because the boy was of the Katyayana lineage and was the son of a Samyukta woman, he was called Samyukta Katyayana. Thereafter, Samyukta Katyayana was nourished and raised with milk, yogurt, butter, ghee, and cream, and he grew rapidly like a lotus in a lake. When he grew up, he learned writing, the conduct and behavior of Brahmins, and "Om" (藏文:ༀ,梵文天城體:ओम्,梵文羅馬擬音:oṃ,漢語字面意思:嗡), "Bho" (藏文:བྷོ་,梵文天城體:भो,梵文羅馬擬音:bho,漢語字面意思:勃), as well as cleanliness, rituals, taking ashes, holding pills, the definitive statements of the Vedas, the sacrificial rites of the Vedas, the poetry of the Vedas, the statecraft of the Vedas, performing sacrifices, having others perform sacrifices, giving, receiving, reciting, and the methods of teaching recitation, becoming a Brahmin skilled in six kinds of activities. He eventually became proficient in eighteen branches of knowledge. At the age of sixteen, he understood all the treatises and defeated all the debaters. He developed such a thought in his mind: "In Jambudvipa, there is no one equal to me, let alone superior." He therefore despised many ordinary people. Then, a lay devotee said to him, "Young man, you should not be arrogant because you think that no one is equal to you, let alone superior. Young man, a son of the Shakya clan has been born in the central region, and he has been prophesied by Brahmins who are skilled in divination that if he remains at home, he will become a Chakravartin king; if he shaves his hair and beard and wears colored robes,

If I were to renounce the household life and become a renunciate solely through pure faith, the name of the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One, would be widely proclaimed in the world. Therefore, he shaved his hair and beard, donned colored robes, and renounced the household life solely through pure faith. As for that Buddha who had manifestly and perfectly awakened to the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, your form and wisdom could not match even a hundredth part, a thousandth part, a millionth part, or a hundred millionth part of him; indeed, they are beyond enumeration. Then, when that boy heard the word "Buddha," which he had never heard before, all his hairs stood on end, and he desired to see him. Then he pleaded with his parents, saying, "Father and Mother, I wish to go to the central country and practice the pure conduct in the presence of that Blessed One. Please grant me permission to do so." Then, the two parents thought, "We cannot prevent this," and said, "Wait a moment, and we two will settle the affairs of the household, and then we will go together and practice the pure conduct in the presence of that Blessed One." Having said these words, the two of them settled the affairs of the household, gave alms, and accumulated merit, and then went to the central country. As they gradually proceeded, they arrived at Rajgir, and then they went to the place where the Blessed One was. From afar, the boy and his parents saw the Buddha, the Blessed One, whose body was well adorned and resplendent with the thirty-two marks of a great being, resembling the shape of a fire, like a flame fed with ghee, like a butter lamp placed in a golden vessel, like a stupa adorned with various precious jewels. They saw the Buddha, the Blessed One, who was intelligent, immaculate, and endowed with purity. Having seen him, they felt great joy. For a sentient being who has arisen from the cause of accumulating virtuous roots, the bliss of seeing the Buddha for the first time is such that even one who has become accustomed to the mind of tranquility for twelve years would not experience such bliss.
