Thus it was said. Monks, what do you think? The one who was a householder at that time is none other than this householder. At that time, this person also delighted in greatness, desiring to subdue others with power, and not wanting to be subdued by the power of others. Now, this person also delights in greatness, desiring to subdue others with power, and not wanting to be subdued by the power of others. The Second Entry of the Elders: The origin resides in Shravasti. At that time, the foolish man Sheng Sheng slandered the Shakya clan. At that time, in Kapilavastu, the son of the sister of the Venerable Ananda, separated from his parents, wandered homelessly in Kapilavastu. At that time, a householder residing in Shravasti, who was a friend of the father of the two, went to Kapilavastu for some business. As soon as he saw the two boys, he recognized them and asked, "Where do your parents live?" The two boys replied, "Sheng Sheng has killed them. Separated from them, we are homeless and wandering around." The householder said, "If none of your relatives are taking care of you, then go to Shravasti. The monk Ananda is your uncle, and he is also fond of relatives, so he will take care of you." The two boys said, "We do not know the way to the Victory Grove of the Prince, what is the way to get there?" The householder said, "Come here, you two, and let me take care of something in Kapilavastu for a while, and then I will take you to the Victory Grove of the Prince." Having said this, the householder left. After he had accomplished all that needed to be done, he took the two boys and came to Shravasti, placed them at the gate of the Victory Grove of the Prince, and instructed them, "Your uncle lives in this place of asceticism, and he will take care of you." Having said this, the householder left. After he left, the two boys entered through a certain gate and stayed there, but Ananda did not recognize them and asked:

Who are you two? Where did you come from? The two of them said: We are the sons of a certain Shakya in the place of Kapilavastu. Kungawo (Ananda) said: Where did your parents go? The two children said: They were killed by Phagkyepo, and we two became orphans, without any support, so we two wandered around. We two heard that in this garden of Prince Gyaljeby (Victorious Birth), there is our uncle, so we two came here. After hearing this, the venerable Kungawo (Ananda) became depressed, thinking, what should I do now? Then, the monks saw him and asked: Venerable Kungawo (Ananda), why are you depressed? Kungawo (Ananda) said: These two children are the sons of my sister, they two have no parents, so they came here, and I am depressed to see them two, how should I raise them two? The Blessed One also said that one should not waste offerings given in faith. The monks said: Didn't the Blessed One say that one should give to those who are helpful? These two will also help us with the lid of the alms bowl, flowers, and fruits. Then, the venerable Kungawo (Ananda) took them two and began to raise them. The monks also brought some food and gave it to them two. The venerable Kungawo (Ananda) gave half of whatever alms he received to them two, and ate half himself. Therefore, Kungawo (Ananda) became weak, thin, pale, and had no strength in his body. Then, the Blessed One saw that the monk Kungawo (Ananda) had become weak, thin, pale, and had no strength in his body. After seeing this, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, why has the monk Kungawo (Ananda) become weak, thin, pale, and has no strength in his body? The monks reported: Venerable, the venerable Kungawo (Ananda) has taken in two sons of his sister, and he takes half of whatever alms he receives for himself, and gives half to them two.

Venerable one, that is the cause, that is the condition. Therefore, the venerable Ānanda became weak, emaciated, pale, and lacked physical strength. Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Ānanda: Ānanda, can these two boys be ordained? He replied: They can be ordained. Then, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, therefore, I allow the food of the Saṅgha to be given to those who wish to be ordained. I also allow the offering of various kinds of alms bowl work items, as well as flowers, fruits, and toothpicks. Then, when the Blessed One allowed the food of the Saṅgha to be eaten, the two children ate and played. Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Ānanda: Ānanda, you said that these two boys can be ordained, why are they not ordained? He replied: Blessed One, they can be ordained. The Blessed One said: Then, what is wrong with ordaining them? He replied: The Blessed One has said that a person who is not yet fifteen years old should not be ordained, nor should they receive full ordination. These two children are not yet seven years old, how can I ordain them? The Blessed One said: Ānanda, can these two boys drive away crows from the food prepared for the Saṅgha? He replied: Blessed One, they can drive them away. The Blessed One said: Therefore, I allow those who are seven years old and can drive away crows to be ordained, let them be ordained. Then, after the Blessed One thus allowed those who are seven years old and can drive away crows to be ordained, the venerable Ānanda ordained the two boys and had them learn to recite. Then, thinking that they were his relatives, he was unable to teach them properly because of his affection, and he spent his days in idle chatter and his nights in drowsiness and sleep. Then, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana saw them and said to the venerable Ānanda: Ānanda, why are these two boys not learning? Ānanda said: Venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, these two boys
