In a place called Gramna, five hundred deer gathered into a herd. The king surrounded them with a four-pronged army, making sure not a single deer escaped. Then, the leader of the deer herd thought: Since I am the leader of this herd of deer, I must consider their success and well-being. Thinking this, he looked around, wondering how to lead the deer in a direction where they could escape. He saw that the army surrounded them without a gap, except for the bank of the raging river, where there was no one. Then, the Bodhisattva thought: These deer cannot jump over this river, nor can they leap or escape. It would be better for me to stand in the middle of the river myself. Thinking this, he said to the deer: Jump up and step on my back with your feet, and cross to the other side. Having said this, the Bodhisattva stood in the middle of the river. Because Bodhisattvas possess great strength, the river could not move him. He stood firmly there, and the deer jumped onto his back, stepping on his feet, and crossed to the other side. As they crossed, their hooves trampled the Bodhisattva's back. Afterwards, the last remaining deer saw this situation and became doubtful, thinking: I will certainly not be saved. The Bodhisattva saw that it was doubtful and comforted it, saying: Friend, do not be afraid, you are not in danger of death. Having said this, the Bodhisattva saved the deer, allowing it to reach the other side, and then the Bodhisattva passed away. Monks, what do you think? At that time, the one who was the leader of the deer herd, abiding in the conduct of a Bodhisattva, was myself. Those who became the five hundred deer were none other than these five hundred giants living in the city of Kushinagara. The last remaining deer at that time was this very Rabzang, and at that time I was also afflicted with a terminal illness.

He rescued them from the place of fear and placed them in the place of no fear. Now, as I am afflicted by the disease of death, I have rescued these five hundred mighty men, including Rabzang, from the fearful cycle of existence and placed them in the ultimate eternal accomplishment and the bliss of nirvana. Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Ananda: Ananda, have you seen anything at all? He replied: Venerable One, I have seen. He said: What have you seen? He replied: Venerable One, I saw that the Blessed One, by the power of taming, left a manifestation and went somewhere. He said: Ananda, it is so. It is so, Ananda, now the Tathagata has two more to be tamed, namely the king of the Gandharvas, Rabga, and the wandering Rabzang. I think to myself, it is easy for me to tame the wandering Rabzang, but the king of the Gandharvas, Rabga, is arrogant and careless, so I left a manifestation and went to the heaven of the Thirty-three, and made the king of the Gandharvas, Rabga, abide in the truths, and then came here. Then the monks asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: Venerable One, what deeds did Rabga do and accumulate, that by the ripening of that karma he was born among the gods and became the king of the Gandharvas? Did he please the Blessed One or displease him? The Blessed One said: It is due to the power of aspiration. They asked: Venerable One, where did he make this aspiration? The Blessed One said: Monks, in the past, in this very fortunate aeon, when the life span of beings was twenty thousand years, there appeared in the world a perfectly enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, a Sugata, a knower of the world, an unsurpassed guide of beings to be tamed, a teacher of gods and humans, a Buddha, the Blessed One named Light Protector. At that time, a top musician came from the south and went to Varanasi. Then, because he was a great teacher, King Krigi welcomed him and gave him a great foundation of enjoyment. The world is...

He desired wealth, so he increased the family's property and left it. At that time, in that Varanasi, there lived a poor layman. He saw the musician experiencing great happiness and became interested in his profession, thinking, 'Through the power of this profession, he is able to experience such happiness. This profession is very good.' So he took refuge and kept the precepts for the rest of his life, and at the time of death, he made a prayer: 'Alas, may I, by this root of virtue, be born wherever I am born, into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family, and may I also become the king of all musicians. May I please the Buddha, the Blessed One, who was prophesied by the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha Light, and may I not displease him.' Monks, what do you think? The layman at that time was none other than the Gandharva King Very Joyful. Because he took refuge there for one lifetime, kept the precepts, and the karma of his prayer at the time of death ripened, wherever he was born, he was born into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family. Monks, I have attained the same state as the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha Light, the same power, the same deeds, and the same methods. He has pleased me and has not displeased me.' Then the monks requested the Blessed One: 'Venerable Blessed One, please look at how exhausted he has become due to the illness at the time of death and the cause of taming.' The Blessed One said: 'Not only now, but also in the past, when I was in the illness at the time of death, in order to tame him, listen to how I suffered greatly. Monks, in the past, in a city called Invincible Victory, there was a king named King Victory who ruled. Later, his queen became pregnant, and after nine or ten months, she gave birth to a son who was handsome, lovely, and beautiful, and they held his birth celebration.'
