Etc. They saw the Buddha Shakyamuni, who was wise, bright, without defilements, and possessed of purity. Having seen him, they felt great joy. What is the feeling of a sentient being who, through the cause of accumulating virtuous roots, sees the Buddha for the first time? Like that, even if one is accustomed to the mind of calm abiding for twelve years, such a feeling of joy will not arise. Having arisen such joy, they went to the place where the perfectly enlightened Buddha Bhadrakalpa was, and having arrived, they bowed their heads at the feet of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Bhadrakalpa, and sat before him to listen to the Dharma. Then, the perfectly enlightened Buddha Bhadrakalpa, having understood their thoughts, predispositions, faculties, wisdom, and nature, taught the Dharma in accordance with them. Therefore, those five hundred sages, while sitting on their respective seats, immediately realized the truth and attained the fruit of non-return. Having seen the truth, they requested: Venerable one, if we can be ordained, receive full ordination, and obtain the status of a bhikshu in the well-spoken Dharma-vinaya, we also wish to practice brahmacharya in the presence of the Blessed One. Then, the perfectly enlightened Buddha Bhadrakalpa ordained those five hundred sages with the words, "Bhikshus, come here," and granted them full ordination, and also prophesied for them. They also, through diligence, practice, and effort, abandoned all defilements and directly realized the state of an arhat. Those arhats, having become free from the desire of the three realms, treated gold and gravel equally, possessed a mind like the sky and the palm of the hand, became as cool as if soaked in sandalwood, destroyed the shell of the egg with wisdom, obtained wisdom and supernormal powers, and individual perfect knowledge, did not crave worldly gain, attachment, and respect, and became objects of offering, remembrance, and reverence for all the gods, including the gods and attendants. Then, when the perfectly enlightened Buddha Bhadrakalpa had completed all the deeds of a Buddha,

When he desired to pass completely into the realm of nirvana without remainder, as he lay on his final bed, those five hundred monks thought: 'It is not our place to watch our teacher pass into nirvana; rather, we should pass into nirvana before him.' So those five hundred monks passed into nirvana first, and after that, the Tathagata, the World-Destroyer, also passed into nirvana. Then that god made a prayer: 'Whatever accumulation of merit these beings have attained, all of that is due to my power. Alas! By this root of virtue, may I also please such a teacher, and may I not displease him. May I go forth in that very doctrine, abandon all defilements, and realize the state of an Arhat. And may I also pass into nirvana before that teacher lies on his final bed.' Monks, what do you think? The one who became a god at that time was none other than this Rabzang (Excellent Protector). Because he made that prayer there, monks, I, the Tathagata, the World-Destroyer, have attained the same qualities, the same power, the same deeds, and the same means as him. He has pleased me and has not displeased me. Having gone forth in my own doctrine, having abandoned all defilements, and having realized the state of an Arhat, when I lie on my final bed, he will pass into nirvana first, and after that, I will pass into nirvana. Then the monks beseeched the Buddha Bhagavan: 'Venerable Bhagavan, as you experience the illness of death, look, the venerable Rabzang (Excellent Protector) has made protection, and abides in the ultimate, the accomplished, and the blissful nirvana.' The Bhagavan said: 'Not only now, but also in the past, when he experienced the illness of death, listen to how he was rescued from a place of fear and placed in a place without fear. Monks, in the past, in the city of Varanasi...

In Varanasi, there was a king named Brahma-given (Tsangpas Jin). King Brahma-given had a horse named "Swift-knowing," which was the best of horses. By the power of this horse, King Brahma-given imposed tribute on all the kings under the sun. Then one day, this horse named "Swift-knowing" died, and the news of its death spread everywhere, with people saying that King Brahma-given's horse "Swift-knowing" had died. Upon hearing this news, all the kings under the sun thought: "He made us pay tribute entirely because of the merit of that horse 'Swift-knowing.' Now that it is dead, if we see him outside, we can do whatever we please with him." So they were all looking for an opportunity to deal with him. King Brahma-given also heard the news that those kings under the sun were looking for an opportunity to deal with him. Upon hearing the news, he was very afraid and dared not come out of the city. Then one day, some merchants came from the north, driving horses to Varanasi for sale. King Brahma-given heard that merchants had come from the north driving horses for sale, and immediately sent some people skilled in judging horses, instructing them: "Go and buy all the horses that have come to be sold today. Pay special attention to see if there is a horse named 'Swift-knowing' among them." The attendants of King Brahma-given replied, "As you command." Then, they bought all the horses and examined them carefully. As a result, they found that the best horse among them was the horse "Swift-knowing," and they reported this to the king. Upon hearing this news, the king was very pleased and rewarded those horse-selling merchants with much gold and silver. Later one day, the king rode the horse "Swift-knowing" to the garden. The kings under the sun heard that King Brahma-given had come to the garden. Upon hearing the news, they gathered their fourfold army of elephants, horses, chariots, and infantry, came to Varanasi, and surrounded the garden. At this time, King Brahma-given was at a loss, not knowing what to do.
