Reported, the Blessed One said, it is due to the power of aspiration. Asked, Blessed One, where did these people make aspirations? The Blessed One taught, Monks, in the past, in the past time, in this very fortunate kalpa, when the life of beings could reach twenty thousand years, the perfectly complete Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Sugata, the Knower of the World, the Tamer of Beings, the Unsurpassed, the Teacher of Gods and Humans, the Buddha Bhagavan named Light Protector appeared in the world. At that time, in Varanasi, there lived a householder whose six sons spoke differently, their views not in harmony with each other. The youngest son of that householder had faith in the Buddha, and he persuaded all his elder brothers to enter the teachings of the perfectly complete Buddha Light Protector. They all reported to their parents and renounced in the teachings of the perfectly complete Buddha Light Protector. There, they spent their lives practicing celibacy, and at the time of death, they made aspirations, saying: May we please the Buddha Bhagavan who is the Brahmin boy prophesied by the perfectly complete Buddha Light Protector, and may we not displease him. May we renounce only in his teachings, abandon all defilements, and realize the state of Arhat. That householder also gave alms and accumulated merit, and in one lifetime, he took refuge and protected the bases of training, and at the time of death, he made aspirations, saying: By this root of virtue, wherever I may be born, may I be born into a wealthy, rich, and prosperous family. At that time, may these seven sons become my sons. May I please the Buddha Bhagavan who is the Brahmin boy prophesied by the perfectly complete Buddha Light Protector, and may I not displease him. Monks, what do you think? The householder at that time is this very householder, who gave alms and accumulated merit there, and took refuge.

Due to the maturation of the karma of guarding the bases of conduct and learning, and making aspirations at the time of death, wherever they were born, they were born into wealthy, rich, and affluent families. They thought, 'This one pleased me and did not displease me, and these are only his sons.' These sons also practiced celibacy in one lifetime and made aspirations at the time of death, therefore, monks, I have attained the same, the same power, the same deeds, and the same methods as the perfectly enlightened Buddha Kashyapa, and these have pleased me and have not displeased me, and having renounced in my own doctrine, having abandoned all defilements, they have directly realized the state of Arhat.' The one called Kashyapa resided in Rajagriha (present-day Rajgir, Bihar). Then, one day, the venerable Maha Kashyapa stayed for a long time in a solitary dwelling, with long hair and beard and worn-out clothes, and went to the Blessed One. At that time, the Blessed One was sitting in the midst of hundreds of thousands of retinues, teaching the Dharma to the Sangha of monks. Then those monks saw the venerable Maha Kashyapa from afar, and having conceived a contemptuous thought for the venerable Maha Kashyapa, they thought, 'Where did this venerable monk with long hair and beard, ragged clothes, and unkempt appearance come from?' Then the Blessed One, knowing the thoughts of those monks with his wisdom, thought, 'This monk Kashyapa, after my complete passing into nirvana, will do the work of my doctrine, and will accurately compile the Sutras, the Abhidhamma, and the Vinaya.' These monks, however, have conceived a great contempt for him, and I should rebuke them. However, this one will become an object of worship, reverence, and respect for the world with gods and humans.' Thinking thus, the Blessed One said to the monks, 'Monks, do not conceive a great contempt for the monk Kashyapa. This one, after my complete passing into nirvana, will do the work of my doctrine.'
