Everything arises with defilement from the outside, seeking external lands, and dwelling in external mud. What actions did he perform that led to the ripening of those actions? He pleased the Blessed One and did not displease him. He renounced the world in the Blessed One's teachings, abandoned all defilements, and directly realized the state of an Arhat. The Blessed One said: "Monks, this very person performed and accumulated such actions. Monks, in the past, in a bygone era, in this very fortunate aeon, when the lifespan of beings was twenty thousand years, the perfectly complete Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Sugata, the Knower of the World, the Tamer of Beings, the unsurpassed Teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One, named Light Protector, appeared in the world. At that time, in the city of Varanasi, there lived a householder who was rich, wealthy, and affluent, with extensive and vast possessions, possessing the wealth of Vaishravana, comparable to the wealth of Vaishravana. Later, he became fond of the Buddha, fond of the Dharma, and fond of the Sangha. He took refuge and adopted the precepts, directly realizing the fruit of non-return. He thought: 'I have neither son nor daughter, so after I die and pass away, everything I own will be controlled by the king. Instead, I should honor the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha.' So, he built a monastery complete in every aspect, provided all the necessary items, and served the monks with all kinds of provisions. He appointed a monk as a caretaker there. Then, one day, the caretaker had some business to attend to in a remote area, so he informed the householder and left. After he had left, an Arhat, while wandering and traveling, arrived at that monastery. The householder saw that he was beautiful and his attendants were beautiful, and as soon as he saw him, he became very fond of him. Being fond of him, he thought: 'If I invite only him alone, he will not accept. Instead, I will invite the entire Sangha of monks to my house for his sake.'

Thinking to invite and offer alms, he prostrated at his feet and said, 'Venerable one, would you allow me to invite the Sangha of monks to my house for alms tomorrow?'. Then, that Arhat thought, 'If I do not agree, it will become an obstacle to these monks' gain of offerings, and it will also become an obstacle to this patron's accumulation of merit.', so he did not say anything to him, indicating his permission. Then, the householder, the next day, for the sake of the Sangha of monks, prepared a ritualistic bath, bedding, and cushions in his house, and prepared water, and then sent people to invite the monks, urging them, 'Venerable ones, know that now is the time for the ritualistic bath, please take the bath in accordance with the ritual.'. Then, the monks arrived at his house, and the householder summoned a barber, had all the monks shave their heads, and had them bathe in a ritualistic bath, and then personally satisfied them with many clean and delicious foods. That managing monk also returned to that monastery after completing his business in the region. After he returned, he asked, 'Those monks are not to be seen, where have they gone?', and they replied, 'The householder has invited them to his house.'. He asked, 'For whom did he invite them?', and they replied, 'He invited them for a newly arrived monk.'. Then, as soon as he heard this, he became very unhappy, thinking, 'I am the one who does all the work, and for a newly arrived monk, he has invited the Sangha of monks.', so he angrily went to that householder's house. When he went there and looked, he saw that the householder himself was respectfully attending to that Arhat. Then, he became angry because of even more jealousy. When the monks had finished their meal and were about to return to the monastery, he went to that Arhat and said, 'Venerable one, do you know for whom this householder is doing this?'. The Arhat said, 'I know, it is for the non-returner.'. The managing monk said, 'If that is the case, your shaving of his hair is in vain.'
