At that time, in Shravasti, there was a Brahmin. He took a wife from the same caste, and they played and rejoiced together, indulging in pleasure. Later, his wife became pregnant, and after nine or ten months, she gave birth to a boy who was handsome, pleasing to look at, and beautiful. They held a grand celebration for his birth and gave him a name that suited his caste. They raised him with milk, yogurt, butter, ghee, and the essence of ghee. When he grew up, they taught him writing, the conduct of Brahmins, behavior, and "ༀ་" (Tibetan, Devanagari: ओ, Romanized Sanskrit: oṃ, Literal Chinese meaning: Om), "བྷོ་" (Tibetan, Devanagari: भो, Romanized Sanskrit: bho, Literal Chinese meaning: Bho), cleanliness, rituals, taking ashes, holding pellets, the interpretation of the Vedas, the sacrifices of the Vedas, the poetry of the Vedas, the politics of the Vedas, the act of offering sacrifices, and having him perform sacrifices, giving, receiving, reciting, and the methods of teaching recitation. He became a Brahmin skilled in six occupations and eventually became proficient in eighteen fields of knowledge. Then, when he was sixteen years old, he understood all the treatises and refuted all the arguments. Then, he made a vow of debate, saying, "Since there is no one equal to me, let alone superior to me." He was arrogant with the pride of debate and despised all the Brahmins. Then one day, those Brahmins had the thought: "The ascetic Gautama is the one who tames the untamed, so this boy should be introduced to the ascetic Gautama. However, he might ordain him, and if he does, we will be liberated from this." Those Brahmins who had been despised told the boy about the qualities of the Buddha Shakyamuni, saying, "You are like our son, and since there is no one equal to you, let alone superior to you, what is the use of sitting arrogantly with the pride of wisdom? This ascetic Gautama is beautiful in body and mind, and is all-knowing and all-seeing, you cannot match even one percent of his appearance and wisdom, not one thousandth, not one millionth." That's what they said. Then

As soon as he heard that, the Brahmin boy wanted to see the Blessed One. Then one day, he went to where the Blessed One was. From afar, the Brahmin boy saw the Buddha, the Blessed One, whose body was well adorned and radiant with the thirty-two marks of a great man, appearing like a body of fire, like a flame fed with ghee, like a lamp placed in a golden vessel, like a stupa adorned with various jewels. He saw the Buddha, the Blessed One, who was intelligent, immaculate, and possessed of purity. Having seen him, he felt supreme joy. Just as a sentient being who has accumulated the cause of virtue feels when first seeing the Buddha, even one who has practiced calm abiding meditation for twelve years would not experience such joy. Having seen him in this way, he was without pride in his appearance. He thought, "This one is the best in my opinion, but he is not equal to me in wisdom." However, for a while, I will test whether this one is omniscient and all-seeing or not. Thinking that he would ask a question in his mind, he went to where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, he engaged in various conversations that were pleasing and satisfying to the Blessed One, and then sat down to one side. Then, the Blessed One, knowing his mind, foretold the question that he had conceived in his mind. Then, the Brahmin boy became very happy with the Blessed One. Thinking, "This one is definitely omniscient and all-seeing," he rose from his seat, draped his upper robe over one shoulder, and, with his palms joined together, bowed to the Blessed One and said this to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, would you grant that I, together with the community of monks, may accept food at my house for seven days?" Then, the Blessed One, by not saying anything to the Brahmin boy, granted it. Then, the Brahmin boy, knowing that the Blessed One had granted it by not saying anything, bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One and departed from the presence of the Blessed One. Then, he
