Just like a lotus grew among them. Then, when he grew up, he learned letters, the conduct of Brahmins, behavior, and things called Om (藏文:ༀ,梵文天城体:ओम्,梵文罗马拟音:oṃ,汉语字面意思:嗡) and Bho (藏文:བྷོ་,梵文天城体:भो,梵文罗马拟音:bho,汉语字面意思:波), as well as cleanliness, rituals, taking ashes, holding pills, the definite expression of the Vedas, the sacrifice of the Vedas, the poetry of the Vedas, the governance of the Vedas, performing sacrifices, having others perform sacrifices, giving, receiving, reciting, and the methods of having others learn to recite, and became a Brahmin skilled in six kinds of activities. He eventually became proficient in eighteen fields of knowledge. His father taught the Brahmin mantras to about five hundred Brahmin children. Then, one day he grew old and thought: Now that I am old, I will not be able to teach these five hundred Brahmin children mantras anymore. I think I should make this child the teacher of the group, so he admonished his son: Son, black one, now I am old and will not be able to teach these five hundred Brahmin children mantras anymore. You are also proficient in mantras, so be the mantra teacher of these Brahmin children. The son said: As the teacher commands, so I shall do. After that, he began to teach the five hundred Brahmin children mantras. At that time, in Rajgir, another Brahmin performed a sacrifice and offered many riches to the Brahmins. At the place where the sacrifice was being performed, some Brahmins said: We are the masters of the wealth, you are not the masters. The people living in the village said: We are pure, you are servants who serve the king, so we are the masters of these riches, you are not the masters. Then, the black Brahmin thought: These Brahmins will have a great quarrel, and others will not be able to calm it down, but I myself must mediate. Thinking this, he began to stop those Brahmins, but he was unable to calm the quarrel. He became even more frustrated than before, thinking: I should abandon my retinue and settle alone in the forest. So he abandoned his retinue.

Having abandoned those, he went to a certain forest. In that forest, there also lived a fierce, terrifying, and splendor-stealing being called the Black Yaksha. He constantly caused suffering to thousands of beings. In that forest, there also lived a hermit, and the yaksha was very fond of that hermit. Then, the black Brahmin saw that hermit from afar. Having seen him, he became fond of him. Having become fond of him, he rushed to him. He struck him with convincing words. Therefore, he developed the four concentrations and the five superknowledges there. Then, one day, that old hermit died. After he died, the black hermit stayed in that very place. Then, one day, the people of Rajagriha requested the Blessed One, saying: Venerable, this black yaksha holds grudges against us even though we have no enmity, and treats us as enemies even though we are not enemies. He constantly harms thousands of beings. Venerable, the Blessed One has subdued other unruly nagas such as Nanda and Upananda, and has also subdued other unruly yakshas such as those dwelling in the wilderness. If the Blessed One could also subdue the black yaksha out of compassion, it would be excellent. Then, the Blessed One consented to the people of Rajagriha by not speaking. The Blessed One summoned that yaksha by means of miraculous power and commanded him: Hey, do not harm sentient beings! Abandon this sinful deed! He replied: As the Blessed One commands me, so shall I do. Having said this, he took refuge and precepts from the Blessed One and then said this: Venerable, from this day forward, I shall protect and guard the people of Rajagriha. Having said this, he bowed to the feet of the Blessed One with his head, and having gone from the Blessed One, he went to his own abode and stayed there. While staying there, he thought: That black hermit is doing meaningless asceticism. I see that he will die within seven days on top of his afflictions. Because of compassion for him, he went towards him.
