I learned the methods to avoid being harmed by ghosts and spirits, as well as severe punishment methods, and became proficient in the five sciences. Then, he saw his father ruling the kingdom in ways that were both in accordance with and not in accordance with the Dharma, and he thought: 'After my father passes away, I must take control of the kingdom's power. I should abandon household life and dwell in the forest.' Thinking this, he informed his father and went to dwell in the forest. Having gone there, he cultivated the four concentrations and the five superknowledges. After he renounced, five hundred sons of royal ministers were born. When they grew up, they were made to study writing and became proficient in the five sciences. They thought: 'No one is equal to us in appearance, strength, and wisdom, let alone superior.' Then, the teacher said to them: 'Children, do not say that. You are not even one hundredth or one thousandth of the appearance, strength, and wisdom of that king's son who renounced and dwells in the forest.' Having heard this, those youths immediately desired to see that sage, and together with the teacher, they went to where the sage was. From afar, those five hundred youths saw the sage, who was beautiful and pleasing, with subdued senses and a peaceful mind. Having seen him, their pride in their appearance vanished. They thought: 'Our teacher praised this sage's beautiful appearance and qualities. Since his appearance is indeed as he described, then his qualities must also be as he described. We should abandon household life and practice celibacy in his presence.' Thinking this, they renounced in his presence. Having renounced there, they cultivated the four concentrations and the five superknowledges. Monks, what do you think? At that time, the one who became the sage, abiding in the conduct of a Bodhisattva, was myself. At that time, those who became the five hundred youths are these very ones.

Indeed, it is so. At that time, the teacher of Akshobhya was none other than this deity. At that time, these beings also relied on this deity, and I subdued their pride and established them in the four dhyanas and five supernormal powers. Even now, these beings rely solely on this deity, and I have established them in the attainment of ultimate permanence and the blissful nirvana. Furthermore, in the teachings of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light-Protector, all of these beings went forth. There, these beings practiced celibacy for one lifetime and made aspirations at the time of death: 'May the Buddha, the Bhagavan, who is the Brahmin boy predicted by the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light-Protector, please us, and may he not displease us. May we go forth in his teachings alone, abandon all afflictions, and manifest the state of an Arhat.' Monks, what do you think? At that time, the five hundred monks who went forth in the teachings of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light-Protector were none other than these who have now gone forth. They went forth there, practiced celibacy for one lifetime, and made aspirations at the time of death: 'May the Buddha, the Bhagavan, who is the Brahmin boy predicted by the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light-Protector, please us, and may he not displease us. May we go forth in his teachings alone, abandon all afflictions, and manifest the state of an Arhat.' Therefore, monks, I have attained the same qualities as the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light-Protector, the same power, the same deeds, and the same skillful means. These beings have pleased me and have not displeased me, and having gone forth in my own teachings, they have abandoned all afflictions and manifested the state of an Arhat. The story called 'The Bull' is as follows: The basis of the story is that the Buddha was residing in Shravasti. At that time, in Shravasti, not far from the grove of Prince Jeta, a herd of cows was gathered. There, two excellent bulls fought, and one

One beat the other, tearing open its stomach, its intestines fell to the ground, and a feeling of hatred arose towards that moon, knocking it to the ground. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, is the teacher of the one and only path, possessing mastery over the two kinds of knowledge and wisdom, skilled in the three unmixed mindfulness establishments, fearless with the four fearlessnesses, liberated from the cycle of the five destinies, skilled in the six sense bases, with the seven branches of enlightenment as the field of activity, a meditator on the eight liberations, entering into the samadhi of the nine successive abidings, possessing the ten powers, proclaiming the great roar of the true lion, by nature, three times during the day and three times during the night, that is, six times during the day and night, he looks upon the world with the eye of a Buddha, who declines? Who prospers? Who is poor? Who has become miserable? Who is endowed with harm? Who is poor, miserable, and endowed with harm? Who inclines towards the lower realms? Who falls into the lower realms? Who has fallen into the lower realms? Who is it that I will rescue from the lower realms and place in the heavens, liberation, and fruition? Who is it that I will pull out of the mud of misconduct by the hand? Who is it that I will make the master of the wealth of the seven noble riches, from being without the seven noble riches? Who is it that I will cause to generate roots of virtue from not having generated them? Who is it that I will cause to fully ripen from having already generated roots of virtue? Who is it that I will pierce with the sword of wisdom from having fully ripened roots of virtue? For whom shall I make the world adorned by the appearance of a Buddha, together with its fruits? Thus, the wisdom vision engages. The ocean is the abode of aquatic creatures, the waves of time may pass, but for the sons to be tamed, the Buddha does not miss the time. Then, the Bhagavan thought: If that ox were to die at this moment, then sentient beings would go to hell, now is the time to extract it from the lower realms. Thinking thus, the Bhagavan disappeared from the garden of Prince Jeta and went to the ox. The Bhagavan put the intestines of that ox back into its stomach, sewed up the wound, and also gave it grass and water.
