After all had renounced, there these ones practiced celibacy for one lifetime, and at the time of death made aspirations, saying: Thus, after we have renounced in the teachings of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Kāśyapa, and practiced celibacy for one lifetime, yet have not obtained any accumulation of merit, may we be able to please that Buddha Bhagavan who is the Brahmin boy prophesied by the perfectly enlightened Buddha Kāśyapa, and may we not displease him. Having renounced in his teachings, abandoning all afflictions, may we realize the state of Arhat. Monks, what do you think? Those five hundred monks who renounced at that time are these very five hundred monks. There they practiced celibacy for one lifetime, and at the time of death made aspirations, saying: May we be able to please that Buddha Bhagavan who is the Brahmin boy prophesied by the perfectly enlightened Buddha Kāśyapa, and may we not displease him. Having renounced in his teachings, abandoning all afflictions, may we realize the state of Arhat. Therefore, monks, I have attained a state that is extremely similar, power similar, activity similar, and skillful means similar to the perfectly enlightened Buddha Kāśyapa. These ones have pleased me and have not displeased me, and having renounced in my teachings, abandoning all afflictions, they have realized the state of Arhat. The "Hearing": The basis of the discourse is that he was residing in Shravasti. At that time in Shravasti, there lived a householder who was rich, had much wealth, great enjoyment, extensive possessions, possessed the wealth of Vaishravana, and rivaled the wealth of Vaishravana. Through a confluence of circumstances, he took a wife, and together with her, he played, rejoiced, and enjoyed. Later, his wife became pregnant. After nine or ten months, she gave birth to a boy who was handsome, pleasing to behold, beautiful, had a good complexion, was golden in color, had a head like an umbrella, long arms, and a broad forehead.

A person with a high nose, a good nose, and thick eyebrows was born. A grand birth celebration was held for him, and he was named according to his lineage. He was raised with milk, yogurt, butter, ghee, and the essence of butter, growing vigorously like a lotus in a pond. Then, when he grew up, he learned writing, mental arithmetic, storytelling, manual calculation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, hiding, spreading, clothing appraisal, jewel appraisal, gem appraisal, spice appraisal, medicine appraisal, elephant appraisal, horse appraisal, and weapon appraisal. He became proficient in writing, skilled in reading, intelligent, clear in his actions, sincere in his heart, and adept in eight types of appraisal. Then, his father built him three residences: a winter residence, a summer residence, and a rainy season residence. He also built three gardens and took three wives: a senior wife, a middle wife, and a junior wife. He lived in a tall mansion, enjoying music performed only by women, playing and enjoying himself, and experiencing the fruits of his merit. Later, one spring, many trees blossomed with flowers. Accompanied by his servants, he entered a garden forest where parrots, partridges, cuckoos, peacocks, and shangsang birds were singing. He played and enjoyed himself, beating drums and reveling in happiness. The Bhagavan, the guide of the one and only path, possessing mastery over the two kinds of knowledge and wisdom, skilled in the three unmixed mindfulnesses, fearless with the four fearlessnesses, liberated from the five realms of existence, skilled in the six sense bases, with the seven branches of enlightenment as his field of activity, a meditator on the eight liberations, entering into the nine successive absorptions, possessing the ten powers, roaring the great and true lion's roar, they, according to the Dharma nature, three times during the day and three times during the night, thus six times day and night, observe the world with the Buddha's eye, who is declining, who is prospering, who is poor, who is miserable, who is afflicted, who is poor, miserable, and afflicted, who is falling into the lower realms, who is entering into the lower realms.
