We said, 'Except for pointing to the hut with gestures, do not speak to it, never speak.' The five hundred sages also sat in silence. Then, the Blessed One, due to the power of taming, went to them and spoke to all. They did not answer the Blessed One except by pointing to the hut with gestures. Then, the Blessed One went into that hut and sat on the prepared grass mat. In order to guide those five hundred sages, the Blessed One blessed the lotus pond filled with water to dry up. Then, those five hundred sages saw that there was no water in the pond. Having seen this, they felt great suffering and prayed to the gods. However, no water appeared in their pond. Then, in order to generate faith in them, the gods showed their bodies to those five hundred sages and said: 'Friends, what shall you do, suffering from hunger and thirst? The Blessed One has great magical power and great strength, so you should take refuge in the Blessed One, and by the power of the Blessed One, this pond of water will appear as before.' Then, those five hundred sages, having heard the advice of the gods, felt great joy towards the Blessed One. Having felt joy, they went to where the Blessed One was, asked forgiveness from the Blessed One, and sat before the Blessed One in order to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One understood their thoughts, habits, faculties, knowledge, and nature, and taught the Dharma that was in accordance with them. Then, those five hundred sages, sitting and remaining on the same seat, realized the fruit of non-return in the moment of realizing the truth. Having seen the truth, they rose from their seats, arranged their upper garments over one shoulder, and, bowing with folded hands towards where the Blessed One was, said to the Blessed One: 'Venerable One, if we can obtain ordination, full ordination, and the state of a monk in the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, we would like to be in the presence of the Blessed One.'

One should practice celibacy. Then, the Blessed One ordained the five hundred hermits with the words, "Come, monks," and conferred full ordination, and also prophesied for them. They also, through diligence, practice, and effort, abandoned all defilements and realized the state of Arhat. These Arhats, having become free from the desire of the three realms, with minds that regard gold and rubble as equal, like the sky and the palm of the hand, cooled like sandalwood immersed in water, having shattered the shell of ignorance with wisdom, having obtained wisdom, clairvoyance, and individual self-awareness, not looking to the gains, attachments, and honors of existence, became a place where the gods and their retinues worship, revere, and speak with reverence. After the Blessed One had ordained them and conferred full ordination, he disappeared from that forest and went to the garden of Prince Victory Banner. Then, Brahmins and faithful householders heard that those five hundred monks were dwelling in that forest. Having heard this, they built a temple complete in every way in that forest and offered it to the Sangha of monks, headed by the Buddha. Then the monks asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: Venerable One, what deeds did these five hundred monks do, that as a result of those deeds, they pleased the Blessed One and did not displease him, and having renounced in the Blessed One's teachings, abandoned all defilements, and realized the state of Arhat? The Blessed One replied: It is due to the power of aspiration. Venerable One, where did they make these aspirations? Monks, in the past, in this very fortunate aeon, when the lifespan of beings was twenty thousand years, a fully enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, a Sugata, a knower of the world, a guide of men to be tamed, unsurpassed, a teacher of gods and men, the Buddha, the Blessed One, named Light Treasury, appeared in the world, and his teachings were such.
