They settled and resided there. Then, one day, a Brahmin from the south, accompanied by five hundred attendants, came and established himself near the hermitage of that sage. About five hundred Brahmin youths began to learn the secret mantras of the Brahmins. That Brahmin was one who had mastered the eighteen branches of knowledge. The Brahmin youths of the sage who had been living there before learned of the Brahmin's reputation and went to him, saying, 'O Preceptor, please also benefit us.' The Brahmin said, 'How shall I benefit you?' The Brahmin youths said, 'Please benefit us by teaching us recitation.' The Brahmin said, 'I do not teach another's students.' Then the Brahmin youths thought, 'Our Preceptor provides us with clothes and food, but he cannot teach us recitation. We should abandon him and rely on this Brahmin alone, gathering together for the sake of learning recitation.' Thinking thus, they said to the Brahmin, 'We have abandoned our Preceptor and rely on you alone.' The Brahmin said, 'If that is so, I shall sustain you with clothes, food, and the teaching of recitation.' As soon as they heard this, those Brahmin youths abandoned the sage, who was alone and without companions, and relied on the Brahmin. He also gathered them together with clothes, food, and the teaching of recitation. O monks, what do you think? The Brahmin at that time, who was abiding in the conduct of a Bodhisattva, was none other than myself. There, due to the ripening of the karma of causing dissension among the retinue of that sage, I was cooked in the hells of sentient beings for many years, many hundreds of years, and many hundreds of millions of years. Then, after I died and transmigrated, wherever I was born, I experienced separation from my retinue. Even up to now, due to the ripening of that karma, Devadatta has caused me to be separated from my retinue. The Hundred Karmas. Seventeenth Chapter. Called Forest Hollow. The basis of the story is that the Buddha was dwelling in Shravasti. At that time, there was a monastery called Forest Hollow. In that forest, there was also a naturally formed lake filled with water. In that lake, about five hundred sages resided.

And practicing asceticism, all of those are just like the last existence person whose fruit ripens, needing to be pierced with a sword. The Buddha Bhagavan is the guide of the one and only path, possessing mastery over the two kinds of knowledge and wisdom, skilled in the three unmixed mindfulnesses, fearless with the four fearlessnesses, liberated from the five realms of existence, skilled in the six sense bases, with the seven branches of enlightenment as the field of activity, a meditator on the eight liberations, entering into the nine successive abidings of meditative absorption, possessing the power of the ten strengths, proclaiming the great roar of a true lion, they, according to their nature, three times during the day and three times during the night, that is, six times day and night, observe the world with the Buddha's eye: who declines, who prospers, who dwells in poverty, who becomes miserable, who possesses harm, who is poor, miserable, and possesses harm, who inclines towards the lower realms, who falls into the lower realms, who has fallen into the lower realms, who having been rescued from the lower realms is placed in the heavens, liberation, and fruition. Who is pulled out by the hand from sinking in the mire of evil deeds, who from not having the seven noble riches is made to possess the dominion of the seven noble riches, who from not having generated roots of virtue is made to generate them, who having generated roots of virtue is made to fully ripen them, who having fully ripened roots of virtue is pierced with the sword of wisdom. Thinking: Who should I make possess the world adorned with the appearance of the Buddha and its fruits? Thus, the observation of wisdom enters. The ocean is the place of aquatic creatures, the waves of time may pass, but for those to be tamed, the sons, the Buddha does not miss the opportunity. Then, the Bhagavan thought, now is the time to tame those five hundred hermits, and from Sravasti (Sravasti, ancient Indian city) in Kosala, he disappeared and went to that forest. Those five hundred hermits saw the Buddha Bhagavan from afar. Having seen him, they said to each other: 'Hey, that Gautama the ascetic, indulging in negligence, having abandoned the ascetic life, is coming here.' Even if he comes,
