May I please the deceased, and may I not displease him. What do you think, monks? The one who became a monk at that time was none other than this elephant. Because he did not keep many of the large and small precepts he had learned there, the ripening of that karma caused him to be born into the animal realm. He kept some of the precepts he had learned there, and at the time of death, he made a prayer: 'By this root of virtue, may I please the perfectly complete Buddha Light Guardian, who prophesied the Brahmin boy, the Bhagavan Buddha, and may I not displease him.' Monks, that is because I have attained the same perfect and complete enlightenment as the Buddha Light Guardian, the same power, the same deeds, and the same methods. Therefore, he now pleases me, and does not displease me, which is the karma of the past. What is the karma of the present? He became an elephant and paid homage to me, making my mind happy, and therefore he was born into the realm of the gods, which is the karma of the present. The so-called Naga, is said to have resided in Jeta Grove in Shravasti. At that time, in the great ocean, there lived a Naga king named Wealth. He took a wife through the Naga method of mating, and he played and rejoiced with her. Later, a boy was born, and a grand feast was held. They were naming the boy, saying, 'What should we name this boy?' Since this boy is the son of Wealth, let us name him Wealth Good. Then, the boy Wealth Good was raised with milk, yogurt, butter, ghee, and the essence of ghee. He grew up and was able to walk. According to the customs of the Nagas, three times during the day and three times during the night, Naga sand would fall on their bodies. Therefore, they would experience intense, unbearable, hot, and unpleasant feelings. Until the boy was old enough to be considered a child, the Naga sand would not fall on his body. When he grew up and became an adult, the Naga sand would also fall on his body, and therefore he

Having experienced intense, unbearable, hot, and unpleasant suffering, he asked his parents: Father, Mother, how long will I have to experience such suffering? The parents said: Son, as long as this shared karma exists, you will experience such suffering. Then, that child saw that no dragon sand was falling on the bodies of other great dragons. Having seen this, he asked his parents: Father, Mother, if it seems like we have fallen, why doesn't dragon sand fall on the bodies of these great dragons, but it falls on our bodies? The parents said to him: These great dragons are famous for their greatness, and because they are famous for their greatness, it does not fall on them. Then he saw that in that great ocean, dragon lords who were even worse than them also had no dragon sand falling on their bodies. Having seen this, he said to his parents: Father, Mother, you say that these great dragons are famous for their greatness, and because they are famous for their greatness, dragon sand does not fall on their bodies, but here there are other dragons who are even worse than us, why doesn't dragon sand fall on them, but it falls on us? The two parents said: Although they are worse than us, they have taken refuge and the basis of training, therefore, dragon sand does not fall on their bodies. Then, as soon as he heard this, that child became very happy and said: Father, Mother, those refuge and training

After that, great sufferings will be experienced. This suffering cannot be endured even in a hundredth part of this suffering, nor in a thousandth part, nor in a hundred thousandth part. The Naga son said, 'For the sake of my parents, and for the sake of pacifying the suffering of the sand that I was born with, I will protect it with all my ability.' Having said this, the Naga son filled a vessel with heavenly Utpala flowers, lotuses, water lilies, and white lotuses. Disappearing from within the great ocean, he went to the garden of Prince Jeta. At that time, the Blessed One was teaching the Dharma while residing among hundreds of thousands of attendants. Then, from afar, the Naga son saw the Buddha, the Blessed One, who was beautiful and pleasing, with subdued senses, a peaceful mind, a tamed mind, and endowed with the supreme of complete peace, blazing with glory and splendor like a golden offering pillar. Having seen this, he felt great joy. Having felt joy, he went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, he scattered heavenly Utpala flowers, lotuses, water lilies, and white lotuses upon the Blessed One. He prostrated with his head at the feet of the Blessed One, took refuge in the Blessed One, and received the precepts. He sat before the Blessed One in order to listen to the Dharma. Then, his Naga sand disappeared. He thought, 'The Blessed One has removed my many sufferings and discomforts, and has granted me happiness and comfort. How should I repay the kindness of the Blessed One? If the Blessed One would grant me permission, I would, for as long as I live, attend to the Sangha of monks, including the Buddha, with all necessities.' Then, he rose from his seat, draped his upper robe over one shoulder, and, with his palms joined, bowed towards the Blessed One and said to the Blessed One, 'For as long as I live, I would like to offer robes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine, and medical supplies together with the Sangha of monks. Please grant me permission, Blessed One.' The Blessed One said, 'Young man, give to others.'
