After that, they sat before the Blessed One. The Blessed One, understanding their thoughts, predispositions, faculties, consciousness, and nature, taught them the Dharma accordingly. Therefore, those five hundred merchants, while seated on their seats, shattered the twenty towering peaks of the mountain of the view of the aggregates with the vajra of wisdom, realized the fruit of stream-entry, and having seen the truth, they rose from their seats, draped their upper garments over one shoulder, and bowed with folded hands towards the Blessed One, saying to the Blessed One: "Venerable one, if it is possible for us to be ordained and receive full ordination in the well-spoken Dharma-vinaya, and to obtain the status of a bhikshu, we also wish to practice the pure conduct in the presence of the Blessed One." Then, the Blessed One ordained them with the words, "Come, bhikshus," and granted them full ordination, and also prophesied for them. They also, through diligence, practice, and effort, abandoned all defilements, and directly realized the state of an Arhat. Those Arhats, having become free from the desire of the three realms, possessed equanimity in which gold and rubble are equal, the sky and the palm of the hand are indistinguishable, having become as cool as sandalwood soaked in water, having shattered the shell of the egg with wisdom, having obtained wisdom, supernormal powers, and individual self-awareness, having turned their backs on the gains, attachments, and honors of existence, they became objects of worship, remembrance, and reverence by the gods, including those with power and attendants. Then, the bhikshus requested the Buddha, the Blessed One: "Venerable one, the Blessed One has completely protected these five hundred merchants from great fear, and behold, they have been placed in the ultimate accomplishment of eternity and the blissful Nirvana." The Blessed One said: "Not only now, but also in the past, listen to how I completely protected these same five hundred merchants from great fear and placed them in the four dhyanas and five supernormal powers. Then, they departed from their homeland and eventually arrived at a large, empty forest monastery. In that forest lived a fierce yaksha who could steal splendor, inspire fear, and take the lives of other beings. He unleashed a great black wind, blowing towards those merchants. Consequently, those merchants became helpless, and they felt fear and dread. At that time, in a hermit's dwelling, lived a righteous man endowed with five superknowledges, possessing great power and ability. He saw the five hundred merchants suffering. Having seen them, he took those five hundred merchants, along with their goods, from the empty forest monastery and placed them in his own dwelling. Afterward, the merchants thought: 'In any case, our survival is entirely due to the power of this righteous man. We should abandon our lives at home, ordain in the presence of this righteous man, and practice the pure conduct.' So, those five hundred merchants ordained in the presence of that righteous man and cultivated the four dhyanas and five superknowledges. Monks, what do you think? The one who became the righteous man at that time was myself. The ones who became the five hundred merchants at that time were these five hundred merchants. At that time, I also rescued them from great fear and established them in the four dhyanas and five superknowledges. Now, I am also rescuing them from great fear and establishing them in the ultimate, enduring accomplishment and the blissful nirvana. Furthermore, in the teachings of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light, these individuals ordained. Having ordained, they practiced the pure conduct in one lifetime, and at the time of death, they made a prayer: 'By this virtue, may we please the perfectly enlightened Buddha Light's prophesied Brahmin youth, that Buddha, the Bhagavan. May we not displease him. May we ordain solely in the teachings of that Buddha, abandon all defilements, and directly realize the state of an Arhat.' Monks, what do you think?
