I saw that he was practicing perfect and complete enlightenment. Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, thought: Is this being steadfast? Or, if this being is not steadfast, I should go and observe it. If this being is steadfast, then I will make offerings to him. If this being is not steadfast, then I will make him steadfast. Thinking this, he transformed into the guise of a Brahmin and said: O divine lord, I am here because of hunger, please grant me food. The king thought: If I give him what belongs to another, then I would be saving one life while causing another to suffer. Rather, I will take a mouthful from my own food and eat one mouthful, and give one mouthful to him. Thinking this, the king gave the Brahmin one mouthful, and just as he was about to eat one mouthful himself, the Brahmin said: O divine lord, I cannot survive on one mouthful. As soon as he heard this, the king thought, if I do not give him the next mouthful, this Brahmin might starve to death, and since I have already embarked on working for the benefit of sentient beings, I might as well give up my own life to save the life of another. Thinking this, he made a prayer for unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, saying: Alas, may this root of virtue cause me, in this blind world without a guide, without a complete guide, without a teacher, to become a Tathagata, an Arhat, Perfectly and completely enlightened Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Sugata, knower of the world, tamer of beings to be tamed, unsurpassed, teacher of gods and humans, Buddha, Bhagavan. Having said this, he spoke in verses: By this vast power of generosity, May I become a self-arisen Buddha in the three realms. Surpassing the powers of the Buddhas of the past, May I liberate the vast numbers of beings who have not yet been liberated. Having said this, he gave that mouthful to Indra, the lord of the gods, who was in the guise of a Brahmin. Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, thought: The Bodhisattva has done something extremely difficult. Thinking this, he made the guise of the Brahmin disappear and transformed back into his natural form, saying: What are you striving for with this effort? He replied: For unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment.

Accomplishing enlightenment. Indra said: If your mind and mental events are like that, then you will surely attain complete and perfect enlightenment in unsurpassed and perfect enlightenment, at that time remember me. Having spoken, the Lord of the Gods, Indra, sent down a great rain, at that time all the grains were abundant and the land of Kashi became as before. Monks, what do you think? The king who was then called Moonlight, who abides in the conduct of a Bodhisattva, is myself. At that time I also praised giving and the distribution of giving, what need is there to say when I now see the results of giving and giving? Why does the Tathagata not now praise giving and the distribution of giving? The third verse of the summary from the hundred deeds is completed. Fourth verse of the summary. The summary is: Loving-kindness and the power of black wind, two ants and the realm of conduct, solitary place, elephant, dragon, lion, strife and forest cave, listening, etc. The one called Loving-kindness is: The basis is that he dwelt in Nyen-du, in the Sutra of Turning the Wheel of Dharma, from the telling of the realization of Delightful Wealth, the reasoning is expanded as it arises. The monks asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: Venerable Blessed One, you have satisfied the five groups of monks with the essence of the Holy Dharma, please look at the ultimate Nirvana, the state of accomplishment and bliss. The Blessed One said: Not only now, but also in the past, I satisfied them with my own flesh and blood, how I led them to the path of the ten virtuous actions, listen. Monks, in the past, in the city of Varanasi, there was a king named Loving-kindness, when he was king, the country was rich and prosperous, peaceful and abundant, full of people, peace from strife and fighting, peace from turmoil and internal strife, without thieves, diseases, famine, rice, and sugarcane.

I possess cattle and buffaloes, without harm, expelling thorns, like treating an only child, I rule the kingdom according to the Dharma. That king is also loving, very compassionate, loving towards beings, and fond of generosity. He gives generously and accumulates merit, satisfying ascetics, Brahmins, the poor, the miserable, and beggars. He prepares many foods and drinks and gives to beings living in the sky, water, and land. He cultivates loving-kindness towards the many people living in the country. He dwells pervading as many beings as there are living in his country with a mind of loving-kindness, and through that power, no one can cause even the slightest harm to those beings. Then, one day, five glory-stealing yakshas escaped from the prison of King Vaishravana. They stole the glory of many people and came to Varanasi, where they spread a plague. However, they could not steal the glory of anyone, even those who had become animals. They thought: What power is it that we cannot steal the glory of anyone in this place, even those who have become animals? So they asked the cowherds and shepherds: What power is it that no one can cause even the slightest harm to anyone in this place? They replied: This king is loving, and because he dwells pervading as many beings as there are living in his country with a mind of loving-kindness, no one can cause even the slightest harm in this place. The yakshas thought: That king is known to be very fortunate, loving, very compassionate, and loving towards beings. He will surely be able to satisfy us. So they transformed into the guise of Brahmins and went before the power of loving-kindness and said: O great compassionate one, please satisfy us from hunger! The king said: I
